SA20 auction blog - Brevis fetches record bid from Pretoria Capitals

That is that

Dewald Brevis, the holder of the highest individual T20I score for South Africa, broke the SA20 pay record and was picked up for R16.5 million (approx US$945,000) by the Pretoria Capitals (PC). Aiden Markram also enjoyed a big payday, earning a bid worth R14 million from Durban's Super Giants. Imran Tahir, 46, was picked by JSK in the final round.
Notable unsold players include Andile Phehlukwayo and Junior Dala from a SA perspective and Mustafizur Rahman, Kusal Perera, Jimmy Anderson and Moeen Ali among the international names. Many thanks for tuning in. Looking forward to another exciting SA20 season.

ICYMI: Brevis' record bid

Ganguly on Brevis' bid: “I hope he does well. I think he is a tremendous talent. His game has really progressed over the last one and a half year, as we saw against Australia. On that tour, he showed he is a game-changer, and that’s exactly what you need in T20 cricket. We have Russell, Rutherford, who can really step it up, and I hope Brevis does the same. I never associate performance with money. Leaving aside the R 16.5 million, I believe he is a fantastic talent. He plays spin very well, which is extremely important, and taking everything into account, that’s why he went for that price.”

Royals and DSG battle it out for Coetzee. The bid has zoomed up to R4 million. The bidding war continues between Royals and DSG.
Klaasen takes some notes at the DSG table. Sanga needs a moment to rethink at the Royals table. Royals ahead at R5.2 million

Coetzee is now fit and firing once again. Capitals in the lead at R7.20 million. Plenty of back and forth at the RR table after which Sanga raises the paddle and raises the bid up to R7.30 million.

New Super Giant Markram speaks...

Markram from the SA training in Cardiff:
Is it a bit odd having the SA20 throw up today when you were about to go out and draw it?
It happens quite often nowadays. You sort of crack on, us as players have absolutely no say in that and however the cards fall is how it’s going to be.We’ll get through our training session and I’m sure post-training there will be some news about guys moving to new teams or staying in teams and you can allow it to be what it is today but understand what the job at hand is this week.
You being part of the draw, is that a personal choice for you?
It’s not sort of any bad blood or anything like that. With the retentions you have X amount of money and we’ve got some good players there, Sunrisers to try and keep. That’s the idea, trying to maximise it as best as Sunrisers could and that was the way forward. We’ll see how it all works out later and see how the cards fall again.

Two sets of marquee players have been up and Paarl Royals are the team that have yet to add anyone to their books. They still have R14.5 million available to them.

DSG are the first to put a a bid in. SEC have joined in too.
Up to R2 million as these teams battle it out. SEC take it to R3 million. A reminder that Nortje plays his domestic cricket down in the Eastern Cape.
SEC now up to R4.2 million for Nortje. DSG not letting go just yet. They've pushed it up to R4.5 million. And now R4.9 million.
Quite a long pause as the deliberations continue... SEC have raised their bid to R5 million!

Nandre Burger retained by JSK

Remember that he missed last season as he recovered from lower back stress fractures but Paarl have put in the first bid of R500,000.
They're up against JSK, his old franchise, and Burger is now up to R2 million.
Enter DSG. It's up to R2.5 million and Paarl are still going.
Burger has smashed the R3 million mark now. Paarl in some discussion if they want to go higher. They do but so so do DSG. Paarl are out but Pretoria have now taken it past R4 million. We're at R5 million now for Burger.
I'm sure I just saw Ganguly mouth that he will go one more. And the bid is at R5.6 million at the moment. PC are still bidding. So one more was not quite that.
It's up to R6 million!
DSG have got Burger at R6.1 million.
JSK have the right to match, though. And they want to! DSG raise to R6.3 million. But JSK want their man, and so they will retain Nandre Burger for 6.3 million.

Van der Dussen now at R4.2 million and its still MICT who have hold of him. Now up to R4.6 million.
Oh my, Rassie van der Dussen has attracted a bid of R5 million from MICT.

Matthew Breetzke to SEC for R6.1 million

Expecting this to be big. His base price is R200,000 and MICT have bid straightaway.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape are in the mix and they've taken it to 750k. It's a bidding war between the defending and two time champions and Breetzke is, of course, from the Eastern Cape. But his domestic coach Robbie P is in charge of MICT. We are up to R3 million from MICT.
The same two teams keep going. MICT are raising the paddle to R5 million. And now R6 million, which is more than half the purse they have available. But SEC have won out on R6.1 million.
Will DSG exercise their RTM. No, they say. So Breetzke goes home to the Eastern Cape!

Qdk, who is currently at the CPL with Royals, enters at R500K. Sunrisers raise the paddle for the hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter. Silence across other tables.
Okay, hang on, Capitals jump back into the action and compete with Sunrisers once again. Sunrisers hold the bid at R900K. Ganguly takes it past R 1 million for De Kock.
Intense bidding from Capitals and Sunrisers for Qdk. Neither franchise backing out just yet. The bid is at R 2 million right now.
Capitals are out. SEC hold the bid at R2.40 million. Sold to SEC for R2.40 million. DSG don't want to exercise their RTM on de Kock

Kwena Maphaka goes to DSG

Kwena Maphaka, the left-arm quick, also asks for bids from R500K. Has played for PR and RR in the IPL before. Unsurprisingly, Royals make the opening bid for the seriously talented left-armer. DSG jump into the bidding now.
Quick raising of paddles from RR and DSG tables. The bid has zoomed to R950K. Sangha raises the paddle and takes it up to R 1 million for RR. Trevor Penny, their head coach, isn't here. He's with Barbados Royals at the CPL instead.
DSG hold the bid at R1.50 million. PR are out. Oh hello, here's a new bidder: Pretoria Capitals. They have a huge purse. It's between DSG and PC for now. No activity at the PR table. PC are also out.
Sold to DSG for R2.30 million.

Keshav Maharaj moves to Pretoria Capitals

Keshav Maharaj has listed his base price at R500k. SEC make the first move for Maharaj. Potential captaincy candidate? PC now compete with SEC.
SEC's Kaviya Maran raises the paddle once again for SEC. The bid has touched R700k. Pretoria Capitals' new coach Ganguly raises it up to R750K.
Righto, it has quickly jumped up to R900K. Capitals aren't tapping out yet. The bid has now crossed R 1 million. Maharaj is a leadership candidate and hence is in high demand here.
Capitals in the lead at R 1.70 million. Kaviya Maran needs a moment to rethink. SEC drop out. No RTM from DSG. Sold to Capitals for R 1.70 million

Where will the big money land?

There are lots of players to look out for from James Anderson and Shakib-al-Hasan to Wiaan Mulder and Lungi Ngidi but the one I am most excited to see is this batter:
125 Dewald Brevis is the holder of South Africa's highest score in T20Is

Who has what going in?

While no-one wants to use the word mega to avoid stepping on IPL's toes, this is as big an auction as it gets for the SA20 with 84 players slots available and R131 million - just over US$7.5 million - to be spent among the six franchises.
They've all done their pre-signings and retentions which you can read about here but what we need to know for today's purposes is what the team's can spend over the next few hours.
Pretoria Capitals have the most to spend, with just three players on the books ahead of the auction while defending champions MI Cape Town have only 12 of the 19 spots up for grabs and the least left to spend.
Here's the full breakdown of the money the franchises have to spend over the next five hours. And just a reminder that you need 17.5 Rands (ZAR) for one US Dollar today so get your calculators out as we get going.

It's SA20 auction time!

Hello, hello and welcome to the SA20 auction.
We are headed into the fourth (!!) season of South Africa's flagship franchise tournament, which now boasts the second highest-salary cap after the IPL and is an established part of the cricketing landscape in this country, and abroad. Also, and perhaps most importantly, as league commissioner Graeme Smith routinely jokes, it has not killed Test cricket. In fact, South Africa are World Test Championship title-holders and the international game and league have learnt to coincide and benefit each other. So it's not surprise to hear that one of the biggest names in this auction will be mace-winning century-maker and T20I captain Aiden Markram, who was not retained by two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and is among those who could breach the R10 million mark.
As we speak, Markram is preparing for his pre-match press conference ahead of South Africa's T20I series in Enlgland. With luck, he will be on the mic as he gets SA20 payday. We'll keep you posted.
