CRICKET: Members of the Jamaica Cricket Board of Control (JCBC)
were yesterday returned to carry on the affairs of the local
body after they had earlier tendered their resignations after
the cancelled first cricket Test between West Indies and England
in January.
At the second emergency meeting of the Jamaica Cricket
Association (JCA) in less than a month at Sabina Park, venue of
the first Test, the consensus was that the board should stay as
the state of the poor state pitch was not a deliberate act.
All board members, including president Jackie Hendriks, stated
their willingness to resign after the first Test in the current
Cable and Wireless series was abandoned after only 55 minutes of
play. England, who opted to bat after winning the toss had
reached 17 for three in 10.1 overs when the umpires consulted
with match referee Barry Jarman and captains Brian Lara and Mike
Atherton and made their ruling.
In accepting yesterday's decision, Hendriks said: "I'm very
happy for the confidence you have placed in the board. We now
have difficult times ahead and will be doing a great job to get
Jamaica's name back on top of the cricket world.
"Next year when Australia make their tour of the Caribbean we
will make sure that things are in top shape."
In order to achieve a high quality pitch, Kingston Cricket Club,
the home of Sabina Park, has been appointed by the board to
oversee the pitch.
