Ananda College clinched the Elephant Lemonade Cup by recording a
convincing seven wicket win over Lumbini MV in the schools limited
over knock out tournament final worked off at the SSC grounds,
Maitland Place yesterday.
The Anandians put up another splendid performance on the field and
dismissed their opponents for just 111 runs in 45.4 overs. The two
opening bowlers Akalanka Ganegama and Maduranga Mallawarachchi did
the early damage through some superb hostile bowling. In fact Lumbini
lost half of their side for just 45 runs and they really struggled
for runs throughout the innings.
But a fighting knock of 45 by Mohan Wickremasinghe helped Lumbini MV
reach the three figure mark and they were eventually bowled out for
111 runs in the 46th over. Wickremasinghe who was batting with the
help of a runner hoisted one six and struck six boundaries and was
later named as best batsman in the final.
The rest of the batting however failed to make an impact and the
middle order collapsed sensationally against some accurate bowling
which was backed up by a fine set of fielders. Maduranga
Mallawarachchi returned figures of 3 for 14 but it was Akalanka
Ganegama who carried away the best bowlers award for his excellent
opening spell.
The Anandians did not have any difficulties in reaching their victory
target with the openers Lakshan Fernando and Dinusha Bandara leading
the way by putting on 75 runs. Fernando had three boundaries while
Bandara struck seven boundaries during his top score of 38. In fact
Bandara was named as man of the match for his superb all round
contributions.
