TEAMS

Ateeq Javid was, for a while, viewed as the next top player from the Warwickshire conveyor belt that had produced Ian Bell and Chris Woakes, but, for one reason or another, he has not been able to build on his early promise.

A standout player at every stage in the Warwickshire youth teams from the age of 10, Ateeq represented England U19 and made his first-class debut in 2009 aged just 17.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it proved a struggle - it took 18 innings to register his maiden half-century and 11 of his first 17 completed innings produced single-figure scores - but 2013 was something of a breakthrough season. Ateeq played 11 Championship games, averaged just over 44 and scored a maiden first-class century against Somerset.

But, with Jonathan Trott returning and Sam Hain breaking through, he was unable to retain a regular place in the side in 2014 and was obliged to settle for a role in Warwickshire's limited-overs teams. While he struggled for opportunities with the bat, he made some telling contributions with his waspish off-spin - he dismissed Kevin Pietersen with his first delivery in the semi-final as Birmingham won the NatWest T20 Blast - and signed a new three-year deal at the end of the season to underline his place in the club's plans in all formats.

He was unable to establish himself, though. He didn't feature in the Championship side at all in 2016 and only once in 2017 and was released at the end of that season. He joined Leicestershire on a two-year deal. An opportunity to open against Durham brought his only half-century of the season in 10 attempts in 2018.
