Match abandoned without a ball bowled

15th August 2006

11:00 a.m. local time: Sri Lankan cricket authorities have decided to abandon the opening game of the tri-series keeping in mind the security concerns expressed by the South African team in view of the bomb blast near the team hotel yesterday. The official word is that this match has been temporarily postponed and Sri Lankan Cricket authorities are trying to reschedule this match to a later date.

1.25pm: The start of the opening match of the cricket tri-series between South Africa and Sri Lanka has been delayed due to wet ground conditions. Heavy rains lashed the capital last night and continued this morning before relenting towards noon. The good news is that It has not rained for the last three hours. After an inspection of the ground at 12:30 pm, the umpires decided to delay the start, scheduled for 2:30 pm, until the next inspection at 4 o'clock. Watch this space for updates.

2.10 pm More bad news: It has started to rain again and although no official word has come in as yet, the chances of play happening today is bleak. We shall keep you updated.

2.55 pmThe game has been officially called off. However, a reserve day has been kept aside for all seven matches of the series, including the final on August 29. So join us tomorrow, hopefully the rains will keep away and we shall have a game. Till then, ta.
