full toss bunted to cover, Kings have pulled off the greatest-ever T20 chase! Not only the highest score ever hunted down in the format, but done with eight wickets standing and more than an over to spare!
KKR vs PBKS, 42nd Match at Kolkata, IPL, Apr 26 2024 - Match Result
PBKS won by 8 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)
Harshit Rana has conceded the most runs in an innings (61) in IPL for KKR, going past Ryan McLaren's record of 60
This is the highest match aggregate (523) involving KKR & PBKS in IPL
11.40pm That's all we have for tonight folks, with 523 runs scored in a matter of a few hours. Alan and I have scheduled our finger massages, and the eyes also need some rest after watching those record 42 sixes. We have a double-header coming up tomorrow, stay safe until then! Ciao.
The presentation is here...
Curran: Very pleasing. Most importantly the win, cricket has turned to baseball isn't it? We're delighted with the two points. We had a tough few weeks as a team. Forget about the scores, we deserved this victory. (What's with the massive scores?) Loads of different things, guys can hit balls for long periods of time, the coaches, training, the dew, dot balls become wide after reviews and you get the extra ball. Stats are going of the window. For us, it's all about the small moments. With the ball also we hung in there. Really pleased for Jonny, he's been on tour for a long time and was eager to score. Shashank, wow, he was promoted to No. 4 and he's been our find of the season. We've to enjoy the small wins, although this was a big win coming to Kolkata.
Bairstow is the Player of the Match: We got off to a good start and that was key. They got a flier themselves thanks to Sunil so we knew we had to go ballistic in the powerplay. (Does format matter?) Not really, you've got to take risks to go on. When you've to chase 200-plus you've to take risks in the powerplay. (How to approach such a chase?) Try and whack it as hard as possible (laughs). It was a case of if it's in your area you go after it. We wanted to lose as few wickets as possible. Shashank has done it all season, a lovely guy and special player. To have someone like him coming in and do that is unbelievable. His knowledge, he's not young either, he's nice and calm, full credit to him the way he came out and hit it cleanly.
11.20pm: The night Eden Gardens became a batting paradise! Punjab Kings somehow rose from the canvas after conceding 261 with the ball to pull off a record T20 chase with barely a flutter of doubt. Jonny Bairstow finishes on 108 not out, Shashank Singh 67 not out as this incredible IPL for batting continues
Shreyas Iyer: "The way the batters batted was tremendous. So much you ask of them and they delivered. Both teams played tremendously. You have to go back to the drawing board and see where you went wrong. Not defending hurts but it's a great lesson for the players. [Narine] Brilliant to see him go out and strike the ball. Lot to learn from him, he's the MVP of our team."
Shashank Singh: "In the dugout, was watching the wicket. Felt the ball was coming on with good bounce, thought I'd try to play out Sunil and take on the rest of the bowlers. I have licence to bat, just go out and play my shots. Losses have been by small margins. This match, the way Jonny batted was a huge positive. Great learning for me, still five more matches to go."
short outside off, YJB chops one more to the point sweeper
shuffles across and swats through midwicket
BOOM! Donked down the ground, Shashank ices yet another Dorothy Dix to put Kings on the brink
Ramandeep Singh finally gets his wish for a bowl... although not in the best circumstances for KKR
Forecaster 99% in Kings corner now. These algorithms are so fickle...
slower ball, Bairstow mullers six more! This is all over, folks. Stays still in the crease and crashes a drive over long-off as the bowler misses his yorker
short and wide of off, clubbed away to the sweeper
The required rate now practically a run a ball!
full and wide, sliced for four more! Pace on, 141kph and he just needs to get a chunk on it. Beats the dive of deep third
goes big again, that's his fifty! Sits up for another brutal mow over the leg side. Half-century from 23 balls for Shashank and Kings are bringing this home in KKR's backyard
That's the 39th six of the night, the most-ever in a T20!
heave-hooooooooooo! Into the crowd again... short with pace off and Shashank cross-bats it with a vengeance 89m over deep midwicket
slower-ball bumper wide of the stumps. Shashank is on his tippy-toes as he swings and misses... umpires happy it's now wide on height
goes wide blockhole, Bairstow swings hard and toe-ends one out to deep point

Rana again
And the visitors are 75% favourites on Forecaster again
clobbered! Short ball, 122kph outside off, Shashank monsters it over deep midwicket! The slower ball gets taken the distance to finish the over perfectly for Kings
over the wicket, superb slower ball! 115kph legcutter and it foxes Shashank as he swings across the line
No-ball is also signaled, but KKR have reviewed the call. And the ball-tracking calculation shows it would have dipped under his waist by a good distance, so that is overturned
scooped, all the way over fine leg! Chameera goes pace on but it comes out as a full toss and Shashank is perfectly placed to send it up and away
slips in the wide yorker, 143kph. Beats the bat through to the keeper for a dot ball
slower ball in the channel, creamed into the crowd! Wide line and Shashank steps across to lambast yet another six - the 18th of the innings!
Chameera is bowling round the wicket to the right-hander
back of a length, Shashank picks out the fielder in the ring
Chameera now
pumped towards deep cover... dropped, and that's his hundred! Not sure it carried to the man in the deep in the end. Bairstow has muscled his way to an extraordinary century, just a few games after being dropped. From 45 balls, at his domineering best. But Kings need him to stay there and finish the job
moves across early, Rana follows him. Short and wide with pace off, 107kph. Cut out to the sweeper for one
length outside off, another cutter from Rana, 115kph. Bairstow chops down for a single behind point
