Trapped in front and given! Full on off, seams in, Matiullah looks to defend and misses and is hit on the back pad. He reviews it. No bat. That's three reds and Desert Vipers seal the win!
Vipers vs KnightRiders, 9th Match at Abu Dhabi, ILT20, Jan 20 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
9.30pm Well, that will be all the action from today. We saw some great cricket today. A cracking century from Alex Hales, a fine fifty from Colin Munro. Then a brilliant display with the new ball from Sheldon Cottrell especially and Gus Atkinson as well, before Wanindu Hasaranga wowed us with his fielding and his bowling. Andre Russell gave ADKR fans something to cheer about with a quickfire half-century so typical of him, but it was too little, too late as the Vipers continued their perfect start to the tournament. Tomorrow, there is a double-header. Dubai Capitals are taking on Sharjah Warriors in Dubai and then Abu Dhabi Knight Riders will be back in action here at the same venue, against MI Emirates. This is Abhimanyu, signing off on behalf of Ashish Pant and Thilak Rama.
9.20pm Time for the presentation ceremony.
Alex Hales is of course the Player of the Match: "Incredibly special feeling. We've played some good cricket and to get the first hundred of a new tournament is a good feeling. It's been a really enjoyable few years on the cricket field. I just feel that I'm a little more experience and focusing on just one format in the last few years has helped. [On hitting down the ground more] It's been very valuable. I thought in my early 20s I was guilty of hanging back and looking to pull and cut the ball. But you have to keep working and evolving."
Colin Munro: "Alex Hales is in brilliant form and he set the game up for us and Sheldon Cottrell has been brilliant with the new ball. Yeah Kumara was good with the new ball and I was thinking if I would get through it and yeah I got some lucky shots away but yeah once I settled in… Just need to keep pushing the guys to keep getting better. Got a great squad and great people around us so just looking forward to the next couple of games."
Sunil Narine: "[On captaincy] When you lose it's tough and trying to get the right combination is tough when it's not happening. I think if you win the combination looks good. We haven't been bowling well, struggling with the batting. [On him not bowling earlier] Just team setup and team combination, you never know what can happen. Hopefully we can get that combination, get early wickets and get that performance soon.
9.12pm What a comprehensive win for Desert Vipers. They were on top all throughout, after Andre Russell got Rohan Mustafa out in the first over. Alex Hales slammed a majestic century -- the first of the tournament -- and skipper Colin Munro hit a half-century as they posted 219 -- the biggest total of the tournament. For Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, nothing went right except Russell's 29-ball 57. Him being in form is the only positive takeaway from them and while they managed to get past the lowest score in the tournament, they have suffered the biggest defeat, in terms of runs, in the tournament. It's a 111-run win for the Vipers, that takes them up to the top of the table with three wins in three matches. ADKR remain firmly at the bottom, with no win in four games.
Howell, with the keeper up now
Full outside off, defends it out to point
Lahiru Kumara is the last batter
Shiraz has his revenge! Goes full and wide, Russell looks to slap it away on the off side but it's hit straight to Rohan Mustafa at sweeper cover. Shiraz does a little rifle-shooting celebration. He'll be delighted to get the big man's wicket
Full toss outside off, slaps it out to long-on. Lets out an angry scream at having missed out. Turns down the single again
Tom Curran is out there giving some bowling tips to a young kid at the boundary rope
Wide full toss, Russell reaches out and cuts to deep third. Turns down the single
That was full on middle and leg, he backs away to make room and clobbers this high in the air and well over long-on! Back-to-back sixes!
Full toss angling into him and Russell clears his front leg and clears the rope at cow corner. Brings up his fifty!
Length ball outside off, tapped down towards midwicket and they take the quick single. The fielder is quick to get the ball to Billings who deflects the ball on to the stumps but Matiullah was safely in
In the blockhole on middle and off, Russell defends to the off side
Adarsh: "DreRuss: 40/0 in 20 balls. Others: 32/8 in 59 balls."
That was full and sliding down leg and Russell tickles it fine for a boundary
Slower ball, full outside off, and Russell swings and misses
Gentle length ball on middle, clipped off the pads behind square on the leg side
Matiullah Khan is in at No. 10
And he strikes immediately! Off cutter on middle and he straightens his bat at the last moment as he looked to flick and that loops up straight back to the bowler!
Here's Benny Howell, who is into the attack quite late!
Very full outside off and Russell reaches out and slaps it down the ground, to the long-on boundary. There was a fielder at long-off, but this was hit hard and he can't get there. Good over for the Knight Riders. One they badly needed.
Wide yorker, but this was too wide. Russell was backing away and had to change direction and falls over but will get another chance now as Shiraz will have to rebowl that
Yorker on leg again but this time Russell was quick to back away and clip it behind square. Atkinson runs to his right and dives to stop it, but can't keep it out. He goes over the rope himself after trying to push the ball in, but the ball also rolls onto the rope
Goes around the wicket, and nails the yorker on leg. Russell looks to defend and loses balance and is on the ground, but manages to block it with his bat
Walloped over midwicket! Banged in short on leg and Russell swivels pulls with a flat bat and that's flown over the rope!
Yorker on leg, Russell can jam his bat down and keep it out
Russell on strike. He is starting to look dangerous
Full on off, with his slingy action, punched down the ground to mid-on
Here is Shiraz Ahmed
