ends the game with a slower ball outside off. Looks to slog it away, misses, and Curran lets out a roar. What a job he and Pathirana have done here
Vipers vs DC, 20th Match at Dubai, ILT20, Jan 28 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
9.57pm That's it from us for tonight. We hope you've enjoyed our coverage. Until next time, good night!
Adam Zampa is the Player of the Match: "Good to be here, slightly jetlagged still, but good to be here. We're used to that now, coming into new environments, fitting in as soon as possible. I've played in the UAE quite a bit, we've had the World Cup and some of the IPLs here too. We needed to get wickets in the middle to make a game of it. They got off to a flier and had some dangerous guys in the middle, so it was good to make a difference."
Colin Munro: "I thought they bowled exceptionally well, and other players stepped up today, not just Alex Hales. We were a few runs short, but we bowled outstandingly well to defend it. We probably weren't as proactive against the spinners as we could have been, but with our bowling line-up, anything above 140 is competitive. I thought the way TC came in and bowled three in the end, same with Pathirana, was excellent. [On the lack of bowling changes:] I usually make a lot of changes, but I thought tonight, spin was tough to hit [so I bowled Hasaranga and Mustafa for eight overs straight]."
Rovman Powell: "It's pretty disappointing. Going into the last five, the game was ours, but credit to them, they bowled well in the last five. It's two points we really needed that we missed. We still have three more games, hopefully we can focus on those. Credit to our bowlers, the way we bowled in the last eight overs was commendable. If we had a better start, that would have also helped us. [On Zampa:] World-class bowler who delivered a world-class performance. That is why he's here."
Adarsh: "Never thought 149 could be defended at Dubai, and that too with the chasing side only losing 5 wickets."
9.38pm The Vipers go top of the table with this result, and what a performance it's been from their death bowlers. Colin Munro used his bowlers unconventionally, bowling them in long spells and in their preferred phases. Just the four bowling changes all innings. It left Pathirana and Curran needing to bowl the last six overs between them, with the Capitals needing 58 from 36. They conceded 25 off the first two, which left Capitals needing 33 off 24, and looking perfectly on course. But those last four overs were full of high-class death bowling, and even though Rovman Powell and Yusuf Pathan batted through those overs, they could only hit one boundary in those 24 balls. Amazing stuff.
terrific. Wide yorker, not very wide, but perfect yorker length, and Powell ends up leaving it alone. There's not much he could have done with it, to be fair
13 off 2. Two sixes and it's a tie.
slower ball, full and angling down leg. Powell misses the flick, and then pulls his feet out of the way to pick up the wide
another near-yorker, on leg stump. It's too full to get under, at any rate, and all Yusuf can do is drill it along the ground to long-on
15 off 3.
looks for the leg-stump yorker, ends up bowling at the pads, and Powell whips it wristily but straight to deep backward square leg
16 off 4. What a strangle this has been. Powell is batting outside his crease.
in the blockhole, pretty much, on the stumps. Gets his front leg out of the way and drives to long-on
slower ball outside off, and Yusuf swings hard and misses, aiming leg side
Without taking a wicket, Pathirana and Curran have turned this match around. Outstanding. Capitals need 17 off the last over.
oh wow, he's swung a yorker through the legs of Powell. Super stuff. Late inward tail, going down leg, but Powell had cleared his front leg early to try and access the leg side, so there's no wide. The movement and pace unsettle him so much he doesn't play a shot at all, just pulls his front foot away from the ball to avoid getting hit
low full-toss on the pads, whipped firmly but straight to deep midwicket. Another superb over from Pathirana
Digs it in short, and the low arm is angling this away in the corridor. Flat-bats it on the bounce to long-on
low full-toss around off stump, swiped down the ground to long-on
low full-toss on off stump, and Powell looks to whip it away, gets a thick inside edge to fine leg
looks for the wide yorker, ends up spearing it just wide of the off-side tramline. Left alone
good near-yorker. Very low full-toss close to off stump. Driven firmly to extra-cover on the edge of the circle
Two good overs from Pathirana and Curran. Capitals need 23 off 12 now.
full, angling into the stumps, clears his front leg and swipes to deep midwicket
he'd piled on the pressure with his last few balls, but now he errs with the attempted slower yorker. Full-toss just outside off, and he clears his front leg and hammers it flat down the ground, over the bowler's head
bouncer over the right shoulder. Swings hard at the pull and misses
fires in the leg-stump yorker and Powell jams his bat down and picks up a single to deep square leg, with the ball squeezed between his legs
full on the stumps, whipped down to long-on
slower ball, back of a length. outside off, sneaks under the bat as Yusuf attempts to hoick it into the leg side
Jon: "Munro has not rotated his bowlers well at all. If they lose I blame it on that."
