Hyderabad had the edge over reigning champions Karnataka at stumps on
the second day of their South Zone Ranji Trophy match at the Gymkhana
ground in Secundarabad on Friday. They took a first innings lead of 43
runs and then scored 21 without loss in their second innings at close
of play.
Resuming at six for no loss, Karnataka lost two wickets for 24 before
opener J Arun Kumar and Rowland Barrington each of whom got 37,
effected a recovery with a third wicket partnership of 65 runs off
24.1 overs. They fell in successive overs however and with the
consistent A Vijay being dismissed for 9, Karnataka were again in
trouble at 107 for five.
Tilak Naidu (45) and S Shiraguppi (29) then retreived the innings with
a sixth wicket partnership of 56 runs off 17 overs before the former
gave off spinner Kanwaljit Singh a return catch. Naidu faced 104 balls
and hit six fours. Wickets then fell in a heap and Karnataka were 178
for nine. However a last wicket stand of 34 runs off 12.3 overs
between D Ganesh (19) and GN Umesh (7) saw Karnataka get a bit closer
to the Hyderabad total. For Hyderabad, Kanwaljit Singh (3 for 53) and
JS Yadav (3 for 63) did most of the damage.
