Mitchell Johnson managed something none of his Australian squad mates have this week by producing a century - and he showed some form with the ball as well. Johnson's unbeaten 121 was his first Sheffield Shield hundred and he followed it up by getting a run-out and the wicket of Aaron Finch as Western Australia took control at the MCG.
Australia's specialist batsmen have been struggling around the country but Johnson showed them how it was done on the most run-friendly surface currently on offer. Johnson collected 18 fours and a six during his 143-ball innings and brought up his milestone with back-to-back fours off Damien Wright.
Western Australia were dismissed for 368 on a rain-interrupted day and had the hosts 3 for 77 when play was called off early. Johnson ran-out Michael Hill for 11 and hit Finch on the forearm before the batsman was caught at mid-on attempting a pull.
Johnson finished with 1 for 18 off seven overs in an encouraging warm-up for next week's Ashes Test. Mitchell Marsh improved the Warriors' position with the late wicket of David Hussey (16), who was caught behind after trying to drive. The opener Rob Quiney was left unbeaten on 41.
Rain allowed only three overs before lunch and there were more delays in the second session. The Warriors had resumed on 6 for 319 and the setbacks did not help Adam Voges, who added only four to his overnight 91. Voges was bowled by a John Hastings off-cutter and the bowler also picked up Brett Dorey to collect 3 for 66.
