Hogan helps keep Tasmania in check

Michael Hogan and Nathan Coulter-Nile kept Tasmania in check on the first day of the Sheffield Shield match in Perth, where Western Australia were on top at stumps. Mark Cosgrove top scored with 71 for Tasmania as they were dismissed for 248 and by the close of play Western Australia had reduced the deficit to 189 runs, having reached 1 for 59 with Marcus North on 39 and nightwatchman Michael Beer on 2.

The only wicket the Warriors had lost was that of Cameron Bancroft, who was lbw to Xavier Doherty for 17. It was the fast bowlers who did most of the damage earlier in the day though as Hogan collected 4 for 55 and Coulter-Nile claimed 3 for 60 to restrict the Tasmanians, who had won the toss and chose to bat.

Hogan had Ed Cowan caught behind for 16 but a 65-run second-wicket stand between Cosgrove and Jon Wells steadied the Tigers, although Cosgrove missed the chance to go on and push for a century when he was caught off the bowling of Hogan for 71. George Bailey's return to the Shield from the Test team was unsuccessful and he was caught behind off Hogan for 9, and Ben Dunk was the fourth victim for Hogan, caught for 2 and failing to convert his BBL form into the long format.

Luke Butterworth made 56 and had some assistance from Ben Hilfenhaus with 23, but Coulter-Nile (3 for 60) finished off the tail to have Tasmania all out for 248.
