Michael Vaughan's day began with disappointment and didn't improve after he fell for 10 in Yorkshire's failed pursuit of 165, as Nottinghamshire swept home by 11 runs at Trent Bridge. Matthew Wood scorched Nottinghamshire's innings with a breezy 45, but it was Ali Brown - 39 years old and showing no signs of slowing down - who really put his foot down, smacking 66 from just 32 balls, with five fours and four sixes. Andrew Gale and Naved-ul-Hasan put on 42 for the opening wicket in Yorkshire's reply, but Naved fell to Mark Ealham and Vaughan was trapped in front by Samit Patel soon after. Gale remained firm, cracking 76 from 51 before becoming Ealham's second victim and with him went Yorkshire hopes.
In the ICC World Twenty20, Iain O'Brien wrote in his Cricinfo blog of his sheer annoyance in not being picked due to injury. In his first game back for Leicestershire, he responded in magnificent style to take 5 for 23 - the second-best figures in this year's tournament - and lead his side to an emphatic win over Lancashire at Liverpool. Leicestershire made 146 for 5 thanks to Jim Allenby's powerful 69 from 45, and useful contributions from the lower-order. But Lancashire were soon reduced to 58 for 4, as O'Brien cut through their top-order - including the wicket of Andrew Flintoff for 5. Steven Croft's 40 offered Lancashire hope, as did Mark Chilton's 34 from 32, but the damage had already been done and Andrew Harris picked up the final wicket with one ball of their innings to spare.

Midlands, Wales, West Division

Ian Bell celebrated his selection in England's pre-Ashes camp with a bristling 42 from 22 balls, as Warwickshire breezed past Gloucestershire to record their fourth win in the competition with nearly four overs to spare at Bristol. Gloucestershire, who have a single win to their name, were rolled for 141 as Rikki Clarke, Ant Botha and Jeetan Patel took three wickets apiece. Jonathan Trott propelled Warwickshire's chase with a barnstorming 73 made from just 52 balls and was helped along by Bell, who hit three sixes and two fours in his 42. Warwickshire raced home by seven wickets with 23 balls to spare.

South Division

Kent closed the gap on the table-leaders, Hampshire, when they beat them by eight runsat Tunbridge Wells. Rob Key laid anchor for Kent with an unbeaten 58 from 52 balls, while Darren Stevens provided a remarkably explosive innings of 56 from 27, including six sixes and two fours. With Justin Kemp cracking a useful 16 from 7, Kent set Hampshire a challenging 183, and they began confidently with Michael Lumb hitting 59 from 33 at the top of the order. There were pairs of 30s from Michael Carberry and Chris Benham, but Hampshire continued to lose wickets at vital moments - three were run-out - and their required run-rate spiralled, leaving too much for even Dominic Cork to do.
Middlesex's hapless defence of the Twenty20 Cup holders continued unabated, falling to their sixth defeat in as many matches, this time to Essex who needed just 19 overs to reach their target of 149 at Chelmsford. Middlesex, despite the boost in personnel of Eoin Morgan and Owais Shah, were rolled over for 148. Shah fell for 6 but Morgan made 31, as did Dawid Malan who has otherwise struggled to replicate his magnificent season last year. Danish Kaneria was Essex's star with 3 for 21. Essex made light of their target, as Mark Pettini crashed an unbeaten 80 from 57 with 10 fours and a six. The ageless Matt Walker provided fine support with 34 from 24 as Essex cruised to victory by eight wickets.
Robin Martin-Jenkins' three wickets at the top of Surrey's order proved crucial as Sussex sent them tumbling by six wickets at Hove. Martin-Jenkins ripped out Scott Newman, Usman Afzaal and grabbed the crucial scalp of Mark Ramprakash for 20, just when he appeared to have a hold over Sussex. Andre Nel smacked 19 at No. 10 but there was little else from Surrey, who were dismissed for a lowly 123 off the final ball of the innings. Sussex began calmly, if not explosively, boosted by the return from England duty of Luke Wright, who put on 71 with Murray Goodwin (38) for the opening wicket. The pair fell in quick succession, followed by Matt Prior for 11, but with 18 needed from 30 balls, Dwayne Smith guided them safely to their target without great alarm.
