The ICC announced its official World ODI Team of the Year, as chosen by a specially-appointed selection panel chaired by Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. The announcement was made at the ICC Awards celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney. The awards recognise the best international players of the past 12 months.
The World ODI Team of the Year (in batting order) is:
1. Marvan Atapattu (Captain, Sri Lanka)
2. Adam Gilchrist (Wicketkeeper, Australia)
3. Rahul Dravid (India)
4. Kevin Pietersen (England)
5. Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan)
6. Andrew Flintoff (England)
7. Andrew Symonds (Australia)
8. Daniel Vettori (New Zealand)
9. Brett Lee (Australia)
10. Naved-ul-Hasan (Pakistan)
11. Glenn McGrath (Australia)
12th man: Jacques Kallis (South Africa)
Seven countries are represented in the 12-man line-up but only three players - Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Flintoff and Jacques Kallis - also appeared in the World ODI Team of the Year in 2004.
Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu was named captain of the World ODI Team of the Year, replacing Australia's Ricky Ponting, who was chosen for the role last year.
England batsman Kevin Pietersen capped off a memorable night, securing a place in the World ODI Team of the Year after earlier being named as ODI Player of the Year and Emerging Player of the Year.
Chairman of the ICC Awards Selection Panel, Sunil Gavaskar, said his panel felt it had come up with a line-up that boasted enviable depth in both batting and bowling.
The World XI ODI Team of the Year was chosen by the ICC's specially appointed expert selection panel comprising Sunil Gavaskar (chairman), Sir Richard Hadlee, Courtney Walsh, Rodney Marsh and David Gower using their knowledge, judgement and expert opinion.
Selection was based on performances between the voting period of August 1, 2004 to July 31, 2005. Statistics were available as a guide but were not necessarily a determining factor in the choices made.
ODI statistics for the selected players during the voting period were:
