SURREY have been told that Brad Williams, the young Australian
fast-bowler, will not be available for a county season next year.
Williams, 21, described by Mark Waugh as quicker than Allan
Donald, was one of five players in the country being sounded out
by Surrey with the help of their new Australian coach, Dave Gilbert.
Surrey inquired about the Victorian`s availability to replace
Carl Rackemann, a fellow Australian. Glyn Woodman, Surrey`s chief
executive, said: "He`s a fine prospect, but he is not in our top
three choices."
Williams, a stockier version of his Victoria team colleague Shane
Warne - complete with blond streaks and earring - has played only
12 first-class games since coming into Shield cricket earlier
this year, taking 35 wickets.
On his debut against Queensland, Williams broke Allan Border`s
arm and took five for 88. He toured England with Australia A last
summer. Reports in Australia suggested a fee of close on #40,000
had been on offer from Surrey.
