Consistent Root and Cook surpasses Gooch

11 - Number of consecutive Tests in which Joe Root has got at least one 50-plus score - the joint-second longest such streak for a batsman. AB de Villiers is the only batsmen to score more, with consecutive fifty-plus scores in 12 Tests. Root also has five consecutive 50-plus scores since his captaincy debut, joint-second most for England along with Alastair Cook. Peter May leads this list with eight consecutive scores of fifty and above.

5 - Hundreds scored by Root in the first Test of a series - This is Root's third consecutive century in the first Test of a series. Root made 124 against India at Rajkot and 190 versus South Africa at Lords earlier this year. Root is also the first England captain since Graham Gooch to score a Test hundred at Edgbaston.

0 - Number of batsmen to score more runs than Cook in England and Wales. Cook went past the 5917 runs scored by Gooch at home. At the end of the first day Cook had 5973 runs at 45.79 with 14 hundreds and 30 fifties.

16 - Innings since Cook made his previous Test century. His last hundred was against India at Rajkot in November, when he made 130 in the second innings. During this period Cook managed to score three fifties and had four scores between 40 and 49. Cook scored his 31st Test century, going past Matthew Hayden and Shivnarine Chanderpaul with 30.

248 - Runs added by Cook and Root for the third wicket - the highest partnership in all day-night Tests, going past the 215 runs added by Azhar Ali and Sami Aslam against West Indies in Dubai. The partnership is also the highest ever for the third wicket at Edgbaston .

2 - Number of batsmen older than Mark Stoneman (30 years and 52 days) to make his Test debut for England since 1990. Alan Wells (33 years and 326 days) and Steve James (30 years and 284 days) were older than Stoneman on debut.

22 -Boundaries hit in the first session by England - the joint-second most in the first session on the first day of any Test in the last ten years.

328 -Number of balls Kemar Roach went wicket-less in Tests before dismissing Stoneman. His previous scalp was Kusal Mendis at the P Sara Oval in 2015. Roach finished the day with figures of 2 for 72 from 20 overs.
