Sidhu sizzles, Dujon fizzles out

Border led Australia to the trophy all right, but he didn't exactly shine as a batsman

Navjot Singh Sidhu
Big-hitting Sidhu announced himself on the international stage in the tournament. He made his debut in India's first match, against Australia, in which he scored a rapid 73, and made a fifty against the same opponents in Delhi. He averaged 55 in the tournament and went on to be a regular in the Indian team till the mid-1990s.

Farewell

Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar made his only ODI century, a quick 103 against New Zealand in Nagpur, to try and erase memories of his notorious, painfully slow 36 in the first World Cup. The semi-final against England was his last ODI and he retired from Test cricket too, later in the year.

Duds

Allan Border
Border led the less fancied Australian team to their first World Cup win but he never quite had a good tournament with the bat. With just one 50-plus score in eight matches and a tally of 183 runs at under 23, Border was definitely one of the higher-profile flops.

Jeff Dujon
One of the finer wicketkeeper-batsmen around, Dujon had a forgettable World Cup scoring just 59 runs in five innings, 46 of those in a single knock. The failure of the West Indies' lower middle order was a big factor in their premature exit from the World Cup.
