During the course of 2001 the UCB of SA and its affiliates embarked on a re-structure process. The main objective of the restructure was to ensure financial viability of cricket in the country and to improve the playing strength at amateur and professional level.
After having consulted widely and with the assistance of professional consultants Price Waterhouse Coopers the UCB of SA developed a model that could meet its two objectives.
This model has seen the UCB and its affiliates separate themselves into two entities with two specific areas of focus i.e. amateur and professional.
In an Eastern Province context two new companies, EP Amateur Cricket Board and Jumbos Cricket (Pty) Ltd have been formed. As the name implies, all amateur activities will operate under the EP Amateur Cricket Board. The professional team and all commercial activities will be managed by Jumbos Cricket (Pty) Ltd.
At a Special General Meeting of all clubs and affiliates held on Thursday 11 September, the Articles of Association for these two companies were adopted.
This paves the way for the Judicial Managers Messrs Helm and Louw to convene an Annual General Meeting and for the affiliates to elect two Boards of Directors to serve the two companies.
"The adoption of the respective Articles of Association is a major step forward in the further development of cricket in the province. It is proper that EP Cricket is administered by elected officials and we are pleased that soon we can make application to the High Court to have judicial management lifted and that an AGM can be convened. We are confident that the Articles of Association and the various systems that have been put in place will ensure the future of EP Cricket and that we will make a significant contribution to cricket in South Africa" said Helm and Louw.
