Gambhir sees India through

Gautam Gambhir goes on the offensive, India v Sri Lanka, 4th ODI, Kolkata, December 24, 2009

Gautam Gambhir's unbeaten 150 took India to a series win  •  AFP

A virtually chanceless and unbeaten 150 from Gautam Gambhir made sure he would go to his home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla, with the series sealed 3-1. He shared a 224-run stand with his Delhi team-mate, Virat Kohli. Gambhir hardly looked in any hurry, rarely had to go for aerial shots, looked to run the ball off the face of the bat, place it into gaps for couples, and also made sure he was there till the end.
With youngster Kohli providing the innings with the momentum, Gambhir slipped into the anchor role as the seniors batsman, which was important to do because Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar had already been dismissed, and neither Yuvraj Singh nor MS Dhoni was playing.
Apart from the flicked boundaries to square leg, and glides to third man, Gambhir ran purposefully, scoring 69 of his runs in singles and 20 in twos. Once the younger Kohli lost his cool soon after reaching his century, Gambhir became even more determined to see India through. He made sure there was no further mishaps, scoring 47 off the 70 remaining runs, and reaching his second 150 against Sri Lanka.
