Lucas are 1999 Surrey Senior Cup champions
The east Kingston-based cricket club defeated St. Thomas by eight
wickets in the penultimate round of the Rothman's-sponsored
competition yesterday to move to an unassailable 43 points.
Rain yesterday dented the chances of defending champions Melbourne
who had to settle for first innings points. Melbourne are now on 34
points. They are followed by Kingston on 32. With one round remaining
Melbourne can only total a maximum 40 points while Kingston can go to
38.
At Nelson Oval: St. Thomas 130 and 190; Lucas 221 for two declared
and 102 for two.
St. Thomas resuming on their overnight 23 for three, batted
cautiously before falling for 190 in 77.5 overs as off-spinner Norval
Britton captured 5-59 from 25.5 overs.
Garnett Downie top scored for St. Thomas with a useful 66 from 113
balls (seven boundaries) while Leon Hutchinson chipped in with 43
from 78 balls (five boundaries) as both batsmen posted 80 runs for
the sixth-wicket.
Leg-spinner Wayne Gayle broke the partnership when he had Hutchinson
caught by Kevin Riley at 130 for six, while Downie later went caught
by Delroy Morgan off Christopher Gayle with the score on 178 for
seven. Last man Marlon Pearce went via the run out route from a
direct throw from substitute Royan Smith leaving Lucas to get 100 for
victory.
Openers Christopher Gayle and Kevin Riley posted another half century
opening stand after they plundered 45 runs from just six overs. Gayle
made 41 from 34 balls hitting nine well-timed boundaries off the weak
St. Thomas bowling attack before he became the first of medium pacer
Charles Freckleton's two victims when he was caught behind by
wicketkeeper Marlon Pierce. Oneil Powell then entertained with two
sixes and two fours for 23 while Riley was unbeaten on 25 and Morgan
one.
At Melbourne Oval: Melbourne gained first innings points over St.
Catherine C.C. in their rain affected game.
Scores: St. Catherine C.C. 167 (Renford Pinnock Jnr. 72; Marlon
Samuels 6-51, Donovan Samuels 2-36) and 36 for two; Melbourne 315 for
seven declared (Marlon Samuels 71, Robert Samuels 46, Donovan Pagon

Kingston.

Moore 33; Kerry Scott 4-52, Dwight Mais 3-64); Kingston 91 (Robert
Haynes 5-28) and 166 for six (Raymond Ferguson 49, Valentino Ventura
46, David Bernard took three wickets while Laurie Williams had two).
