Jaques blooms for Yorkshire in Roses match

Phil Jaques starred in a gripping Roses match as Yorkshire held on for a draw against Lancashire at Headingley. After Brad Hodge (15) and Stuart Law (46) gave Lancashire some help in reaching 379 on the first day, Jaques made his mark for Yorkshire when he narrowly missed a century before lunch on the second.

Jaques, the New South Wales opening batsman, rushed to 97 by the break and was dismissed shortly after to miss narrowly the milestone of the county's 100th first-class century against their great rivals. Despite pulling a hamstring during the match, Jaques batted down the order at No. 6 in the second innings and made 44 to take his Championship total to 638 runs at 58. Ian Harvey produced a double of 14 and 48 and chipped in with four first-innings wickets.

Hodge then picked up 8 and Law bashed 61 with seven fours and a six as Lancashire set a victory target of 382. Yorkshire's last pair of Matthew Hoggard and Deon Kruis batted for 75 minutes to earn a draw to stay in third, two places ahead of their opponents.

In the National League Division Two Yorkshire, who are also third, were thrashed by seven wickets at Leicester after struggling to collect 172. Harvey opened the batting with 20 and had figures of 0 for 20 from seven overs.

Dominic Thornely, a short-term replacement for Azhar Mahmood, made a bright start for Surrey as he grabbed 81 and took two wickets in the drawn match against Middlesex at Lord's. Despite batting at No.7, Thornely was able to make a useful contribution in his 127-ball innings that included 11 fours and a six.

Following his 162 and 85 against Sussex two rounds ago, Matthew Elliott had a quiet match as Glamorgan suffered a 10-wicket loss in three days to Kent at Cardiff. Elliott scored 28 in the first innings, but managed only 8 as the last-placed Glamorgan followed on for the second game in a row after Kent harvested 568.

Ashley Noffke continued his impressive start as he pushed Durham to an innings victory over Essex at Chester-le-Street that kept them on top of Division Two. In the first innings he stung them with 4 for 19 in 15 overs as they crashed for 106 in response to Durham's impressive 505, in which Noffle was unbeaten on 25. As Essex followed on, Mark Davies collected five wickets and Noffke added 2 for 79 to register ten victims in his two Championship appearances.

Martin Love's 111 off 133 balls against Middlesex couldn't prevent a two-wicket Division One National League loss at Northampton as their 1 for 283 was overhauled on the final ball. Damien Wright took two wickets, but was expensive as he gave up 66 runs off ten overs.

David Hussey powered to 48 from 55 deliveries to give Nottinghamshire a middle-order surge in their comfortable 61-run win over Lancashire at Trent Bridge. Hodge made 27 and Law 3 in the failed reply, but Lancashire stay in third while Notts are equal bottom of the top table.
