Kent league look for two cricketers from Lanka

The Association of Kent Cricket Clubs (AKCC) are willing to sign on two under 20 cricketers from Sri Lanka to play in the Kent Premier cricket league in England in the summer of 2000.

The offer comes from Keith Calaghan and Eddie Churchill, two officials who accompanied the Kent Young Cricketers and Kent Veterans' teams on their tours to Sri Lanka early this year.

Both officials have been highly taken up by the standard of cricket displayed by the Sri Lankans and they have officially written to tour co-ordinator Errol Seneviratne to negotiate on their behalf.

The terms and conditions for each of the players is a return air ticket (Colombo/London/Colombo), accommodation, food and out of pocket expenses. They will not be contracted as professionals.

The two players AKCC are looking for is an off-spinner cum batsman (middle-order or opening), and an early order batsman.

According to Seneviratne, the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation has been given the choice of picking the two players.

An offer to play in the Kent premier league was given to NCC cricketer Pradeep Hewage by Calaghan early this year, but Hewage did not accept it as he was hoping to be picked for the Sri Lanka 'A' team's tour of England.

Hewage failed to make the team, and also missed out on a golden opportunity of playing under varying English conditions.

Past Sri Lanka cricketers like Stanley Jayasinghe, Clive Inman began their county careers by initially playing league cricket in England.
