The Pakistanis rode on a fine 63 by Younis Khan and some incisive bowling by Azhar Mahmood and Abdul Razzaq to eke out a 34-run win in a warm-up one-day match against Wellington. Electing to bat after winning the toss, the top four all chipped in with useful contributions, allowing the Pakistanis to get up to 258. Then, despite a fine start by Wellington - Chris Nevin (80) and Grant Donaldson put together 91 for the first wicket - the Pakistanis managed to pull things back and restrict Wellington to 224.
The Pakistanis left out four of their frontline players for this match - Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami were all rested - and the lack of firepower with the new ball was quite apparent, as Umar Gul and Shabbir Ahmed were both tonked around for plenty. Gul conceded 44 in 7.1 overs, while Shabbir went for 66 in 10.
Mahmood and Razzaq, however, derailed Wellington's run-chase, not only restricting the runs but also getting among the wickets. Both finished with four-fors - Razzaq took 4 for 33, while Mahmood claimed 4 for 41, including the scalp of Nevin, who reminded the selectors of his batting prowess at the top of the order.
Earlier, Imran Farhat and Yasir Hameed put together 52 for the first wicket to provide an ideal launching pad for the Pakistanis. Saleem Elahi then chipped in with 40, but three wickets in the space of ten runs reduced them to 128 for 5. Moin Khan (32) and Younis then put on 72 for the sixth wicket to put the innings back on track, and late impetus from Razzaq and Mahmood took the Pakistanis past the 250-run mark.
