Pakistan to face betting inquiry - Peter Deeley
Members of the Pakistan team face the prospect of an investigation into allegations of betting on games on the eve of the first Test against Australia which starts here tomorrow. Javed Burki, the former Pakistan captain who is chairman of the ad hoc committee currently running the game in this country, is to initiate an inquiry following rumours in circulation since Pakistan's return from a one-day series in Sri Lanka. A member of the committee, Arif Ali Khan Abbasi, said: "Although we don't believe in the allegations we feel it is our duty to end such malicious rumours." A proper and independent inquiry was the only way to discover the truth, he added. The allegations centre on Sri Lanka's surprising four-wicket win over Pakistan in the second of five one-day internationals last month. Pakistan won the series 4-1. Former Test player Sarfraz Nawaz, who is now adviser to the minister of sport, has suggested the allegations might be investigated at judicial level. This follows recent statements by Imran Khan that some Pakistan players have been involved in betting - which is against the precepts of Islam - in a one-day series involving Australia.
