Sri Lankan Aponso in Holland side for world cup
Sri Lankan Flavian Aponso has been included in the Holland team
for next year`s World Cup Cricket tournament to be played in the
Indian sub continent.
Aponso has been a permanent member of the Holland side as a top
order batsman and an off spinner. He is one of the three
foreigners in the Dutch team and the first and the only Sri Lankan cricketer to play for the Holland national team in its 118-
year-old history.
Sri Lanka to play two Tests against West Indies
Sri Lanka may get a chance of playing their first ever Test
against the West Indians in the Caribbean islands if the current
negotiations with the BCCWI are successful.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board have accepted an invitation from the
Queens Park Cricket Club in Trinidad to play the matches on April
12 & 13 as part of the Centenary Celebrations of the club. A
top official of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board said that his Board
was trying to make use of the opportunity to play a couple of
Test matches there against the West Indies during the visit by
the Sri Lanka team. Sri Lanka and West Indies have met only
once in a Test match in December 1993. The Test which happened to be Sri Lanka`s 50th was ruined by rain at the Tyronne
Fernando Stadium.
Sri Lanka cricket fund raising in West Indies
Sri Lanka plans to take its cricket fund raising campaign to
Singapore and the West Indies next year. Sri Lanka`s Caribbean
visit may also be used by the Cricket Board president to promote
Cricket Fund 2000 in the West Coast of the United States and Canada.
He said that former Air Force cricketer Dr. Cyril Ernest was keen
to have the Sri Lankan cricketers play in the USA and Canada
where there is an estimated 500,000 Sri Lankan expatriates living. The Fund will also be introduced in Singapore before the
triangular one-day tournament.
Sri Lanka `A` team under training
Sri Lanka `A` team is currently training under Lalith Kaluperuma
for next month`s international series in UAE.
All-rounder Ruwan Kalpage who was overlooked for the tour of Australia will lead Sri Lanka `A` team to Sharjah for the 4-nation
Interface Cup tournament from December 5-12.
Sri Lanka to send national team to Singapore
Sri Lanka will send its national team for an international
three-nation limited overs tournament next April in Singapore
which will emerge international cricket`s newest off-shore venue.
Pakistan will meet Sri Lanka in the `curtain raiser` of the Triangular International Cricket series to be played in Singapore on
April 1 next year.
Asian cricketing giants India,Pakistan and Sri Lanka will compete
in the ground-breaking triangular competition from April 1-7. The
three teams will play a round-robin league, with the top two advancing to the final.
