Steve Waugh Reveals Durham Offer (30 Nov 1995)

* Australia`s Steve Waugh revealed yesterday that if he had accepted Durham`s offer to join them for the next three seasons it would have made him the highest-paid player in county cricket.

Waugh, practising in Sydney for the final Pakistan Test starting today, said: "I thought about it but decided if I went over I would cut my Test career short. I want to play for Australia. The only thing I would have achieved is money and money`s not everything."

Durham, who have signed West Indies opening batsman Sherwin Campbell but failed to sign Australian opener Michael Slater or Dean Jones for a second term, are reported to have offered Waugh $80,000 for each of three seasons.
