Stuart Clark, the Middlesex and New South Wales fast bowler, has been rushed into the Australia Test squad as cover for Glenn McGrath who is continuing to recover from an injured right elbow.
Clark, 29, bowled for Middlesex in a National League game against Hampshire today and will join his countrymen tomorrow for a practice session at The Oval. At Old Trafford Clark was selected as cover for McGrath and Brett Lee, but both were eventually cleared to play and helped deny England a likely victory.
"With a decision yet to be made about McGrath's availability for the Test, we want to make sure that we have some cover and added flexibility heading into this match," Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, said. "We have identified Stuart as a similar style bowler to Glenn, and given he has been playing some solid cricket in England, it was felt that he was the most suitable inclusion."
McGrath yesterday claimed he was ready for another crack at England. Writing for The Mail On Sunday he said: "It's back to business as usual for the fifth Test. I've made a full recovery and will definitely play at The Oval."
However, he is continuing to receive treatment from Errol Alcott, the physiotherapist, for the problem that forced him to miss the fourth Test at Trent Bridge. He is expected to take part in the squad's practice session tomorrow, but a date for a final decision has yet to be made.
