The General Council of the UCBSA has resolved to postpone to the winter of
2003 the process regarding proposed changes to the structure of domestic
cricket.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the General Council held in
Johannesburg today (30 November), with the intention of allowing cricket administrators to focus on staging the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup around South Africa.
The General Council stated today that the status quo of domestic cricket
will remain until further notice. However, the Council has accepted that the
current status and structure of domestic professional cricket is not viable
and, immediately after the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, proposals from the
internal committee and the external auditors will be considered during
extensive consultations. The consultation process will include all
affiliates' CEOs, Presidents and financial representatives. Recommendations
will then be made regarding a proposed structure to the Board of Directors
of Cricket SA (Pty) Ltd and the General Council.
Decisions to alter the structure of domestic cricket have been made based on
commercial, economic and transformation considerations. However, the Council
decided that the issue was too complex to be finalized with the Cricket
World Cup in the background.
"We have the priority of the World Cup to focus on and no finality has been
reached on the structure of domestic cricket. We have decided to extend the
process to ensure that we make the right decisions for the future of South
African cricket," said UCB President Percy Sonn.
