Walsh Takes Over From Richardson
BRIDGETOWN - Courtney Walsh will captain the West Indies
cricket team when New Zealand tour the Caribbean later this month
the West Indies Cricket Board of Control (WICBC) confirmed here
Tuesday.
The announcement followed the decision by Richie Richardson to
retire from international cricket at the end of the World
Cup. Richardson was urged to resign following the West Indies
humiliating World Cup defeat to Kenya last week.
Pace bowler Walsh, 33, captained the West Indies in India in
1994, in New Zealand the following year and in the 1995
`one-day` series against Australia in the Caribbean while
Richardson was nursing a shoulder injury.
The WICBC, meeting here Tuesday, also announced that former
West Indies captain Clive Lloyd would be team-coach, replacing
Andy Roberts, while banker Tony Marshall, a member of the
WICBC, has been appointed to replace Wes Hall.
Richardson said of his decision to quit: "I had made up my
mind at the end of the UK tour last summer that I would retire at
the end of the World Cup. I informed the West Indies Cricket
Board of Control several days ago.``
He scored an unbeaten 93 to steer West Indies to victory over
favourites Australia on Monday and virtually guarantee West
Indies a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Richardson, 34, made his Test debut in India in 1983 and took
over the captaincy when Viv Richards stepped down in 1991.
