Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh captain, has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand due to an ankle injury. Mortaza turned his ankle during his second over of New Zealand's chase in the first ODI, was forced off the field and had to watch the match from the sidelines.
Bangladesh eventually won the game - truncated due to rain - by nine runs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. Shakib Al Hasan, who starred in that opening match with a half-century and four wickets, will take over as captain for the remainder of the series.
"We have consulted Shakib and he has agreed to captain the side in this series," Mohammed Jalal Yunus, the BCB Media & Communications Committee Chairman, said. "We have not not decided on a deputy for him and in case he has to leave the field for any reason he will pick the vice-captain."
Seamer Nazmul Hossain was also ruled out due to injury from at least the next two games, prompting the selectors to call in left-arm medium-pacer Syed Rasel and seamer Dolar Mahmud as replacements. Bangladesh lead the five-match series 1-0; the second ODI will be held in Mirpur on October 8.
