Pakistan umpire Aleem Dar has won the David Shepherd trophy for the Umpire of the Year for the third consecutive year at the ICC Awards ceremony in London. He beat competition from Steve Davis, Ian Gould and five-time winner Simon Taufel.

Dar, 43, officiated in five Tests and 13 ODIs during the voting period - August 11, 2010 to August 3, 2011 - including the World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka.

Widely regarded for his umpiring standards, Dar was voted to the award by the 10 Full Member captains as well as the eight-man elite panel of match referees.

"It's a great honour and I'm thankful to everyone at the ICC and also my colleagues on the Elite Panel of ICC umpires along with the Pakistan Cricket Board," Dar said. "I'd like to also thank all my family for all their support since I'm away nearly eight months of the year umpiring."

Congratulations Mr Dar! btw surprised at Gould and Steve Davis. I thought the top 3 would be Dar, Taufel and Asad Rauf. Any takers on teh all time great umpires. I would put Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel ahead of everyone else given the scrutiny via digital aids in place. Dickie Bird would make the top five as well.

  • puneet_usa on September 13, 2011, 14:17 GMT

Being an Indian Cricket Fan- I would like to say that Aleem Dar is a very gifted umpire- He has never gotten bogged down by the reputation of any team or player- Whether it has been the unbeaten dream team of Australia under Pointing or whether decision has to be made against Sachin or for an appealing bowler like Akhtar- Aleem Dar has been rock solid-He never lets anything distract his decision making process not even the new advanced technology where a lot of other umpires are afraid of their own judgement fearing a backlash if their decision is proved incorrect by technology- I have always wondered where Indian umpire Venkataraghavan has disappeared- He was a world class umpire and most teams respected him- it's time that sub-continent umpires from India,Pakistan,SL and BD make their mark at international level and awards like these indeed will act as great motivation for the young upcoming umpires...Heartiest Congrats are in order for Mr. Aleem Dar,Wishing you more success....!

  • Jim27 on September 13, 2011, 14:12 GMT

My heartiest congratulations to him n all Pakistanis!!:)

Just to my friends from Pakistan. Please get above the Pakistan thing that "A Pakistani" has received an award. It is the quality umpiring that should be commended. Folks like Aleem Dar and Simon Toufel have set benchmarks for umpiring and we should be proud of them as individuals and appreciate their umpiring decisions.

  • on September 13, 2011, 12:47 GMT

  • AlanHarrison on September 13, 2011, 12:30 GMT

  • aus_sore_losers on September 13, 2011, 12:19 GMT

i m happy that my indian brothers have been posting good things about Aleem Dar, he certainly deserves it. but its very unfortunate that, our neighbours take opportunity in each and every article and criticise indian players. i wish they show some sportsmanship.

  • mabsoos on September 13, 2011, 11:05 GMT

Mr. Aleem Dar has won 3rd consecutive best umpires award. He is absolutely fantastic and rightly deserved. One thing we should notice that he belongs to Pakistan where in earlier cases always pointing fingures on the umpiring. Irrespective of what he achieved is symbol of patience, honesty, determination and above all love of the game. We should learn from him how we can achive the target. As we know umpiring is not the easiest job in this world of technology but he fooled the technology by delivering 100% results in the recently concluded WC. This is a great a great achivement. Whenever UDRS was used in his officiating matches we were sure that Mr. Aleem Dar will be right and the on field players and captain will be wrong. Players too can learn from him the determination he has at the moment and I am sure, day by day he will stronger and stronger and will be remebered as one of the best umpire in the history of cricket, I am sure.

  • mhk21 on September 13, 2011, 11:05 GMT

i think the future technology after hawk eye will be name DAR-eyes :)

  • likeintcricket on September 13, 2011, 10:55 GMT

Congratulation to Aleem Dar on his fantastic Umpiring. Though he is a human but 99% of his onfield judgments are right. He is now most respected umpires among players and usually they think twice before going for a review against his decision.
