Roger Binny, the Indian coach while speaking to CRICINFO after the
game said he was delighted with his side's performance. He said the
highlight of the side was that they showed a lot of maturity under
pressure and their allround ability was the key to success in this
tournament.
"It's been fantastic. I'm so happy for the guys, they have proved to
be so mature under a lot of pressure. In the Australian game and this
one they were under a lot of pressure", he went on to state.
When asked to compare this side's performance with India's World Cup
winning side of 1983, he said both the teams are very similar with the
strength of the batting, the all-round strength of the side and the
fighting qualities. Both the teams had the same fighting qualities.
Later on he praised the performance of Sodhi, who has continued to
play despite an injury to his hand. "What Sodhi showed us was a lot of
maturity, which you normally see in the senior side. He played two
crucial knocks for India in both the Sri lankan games. His line and
length bowling is perfect for one-day cricket. He looks like a very
good one-day prospect and should do well" Binny said.
He did admit that conditions were helpful to the Asian sides. "The
wickets were slow and low, and the ball spun a bit. Those are the
three conditions that helped the teams from the sub-continent" said
the former Indian allrounder.
Finally when asked as to the effect of the victory back home, he said,
"it's good for Indian cricket that this side has won. I'm sure that it
is going to lift the game up at home, especially amongst the younger
players. They have shown the younger players that with a lot of hard
work, things can be done".
