Andre Russell bludgeons Pakistan into submission

A strong all-round display from Andre Russell helped West Indies beat Pakistan by a huge 150-run margin in their World Cup 2015 Pool B encounter played in Christ Church on Saturday.

Pakistan's captain Misbah ul Haq won the toss and put the opposition in to bat first. His new-ball attack of Mohammad Irfan and Sohail Khan struck early and dismissed West Indies openers, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith in the first eight overs.

Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels then dropped anchor and began to rebuild the innings. At the 15-over mark, West Indies stood at 69 for two, Pakistan had a chance to break the stand but Shahid Afridi dropped Samuels in the 20th over.

Samuels fell, five-overs later, after he and Bravo added 75 for the third wicket. At the 30-over mark, West Indies had scored 150 for the loss of three. Bravo departure due to an injury in the 32nd over gave Pakistan a chance to reign their opponents in.

But they failed in their efforts to do so, as Denesh Ramdin and Lendl Simmons cut lose. Simmons continued his good form after the Ireland hundred and clubbed 50 off 46. Ramdin's dismissal in the 40th over brought Darren Sammy to the crease.

Sammy and Simmons added a quick fire 65 for the fifth wicket and set the tone for a respectable total, before Sammy was dismissed in the 48 over with the score on 259.

Russell came to the fore and made his intentions clear from the start. He produced a blinder of 42 off 13 balls and that made the difference between a 280 and 300-run total. The late onslaught gave West Indies a sizeable total of 310 to defend.

Pakistan were off to a disastrous start with the bat and Jarome Taylor and Jason Holder ran through their top order in the first four overs.

Pakistan was in tatters and lost four wickets with just one run on the board. Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Younis Khan and Haris Sohail were back in the pavilion and Pakistan turned to Misbah to bail them out of trouble.

But Misbah managed just seven and fell in the 11th over. Sohaib Maqsood and Umar Akmal added 80 for the sixth wicket but after their dismissal Pakistan managed just 160. Russell ended with figures of three for 33 in his eight overs.

"The way the game was set up was perfect for me to finish the innings off. Well done to the batters, they did a good job in the middle. The start from Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder, the platform was set up perfectly for me again," he said, after being named Man of the match.
