Big Picture

This is a dream final for those who don't like sameness, uniformity and inhibition. These island teams have taken formula and regulation, locked it in a case somewhere and thrown the key in the sea around them.

Between them, apart from the many funky hairstyles and beards, these two sides have three spinners who bowl the carrom ball; one fast bowler whose release point can be so low umpires have been asked to change their shirt lest the ball is lost in the background; a batsman who plays a shot that endangers his own face before harming the opposition; fielders who leap over the boundary rope, catch the ball, throw it back when in air, recover, come back and take the catch with a success rate that matches some wicketkeepers' with regulation nicks; one batsman who is so enjoying his game he can break into a dance even when concentrating hard and in obvious pain; a captain capable of pulling off the kind of switch identical twins do in professional wrestling - and what are Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara if not twins.

We could go on with that list forever. You just look around and listen to cricketers' painstaking interviews, their tense faces, their breaking bodies, and international cricket seems like incredibly pressure-filled, and possibly glum. Then you watch Jayawardene set up a trap with his spinners, or just the newest innovator from the country trying to reinvent some art of the game. Then you also watch Chris Gayle celebrate a wicket, or try to scare the non-striker's stumps when issuing a Mankading warning. These guys make cricket feel like a fun activity again.

It hasn't been all fun and games for these teams, though. Has there been a bigger heartbreak in our sport than watching West Indies wither away, at times because they have failed to match that flair with sensible cricket? They have had so many pay disputes and strikes you might think communism is alive and well, and you wouldn't be more wrong. It's after many years of gloom that West Indies are rallying again at the world stage. Is this the time when, as their anthem promises, "the runs are going to flow like water, bringing so much joy to every son and daughter"? Is this the time West Indies will "rise again like a raging fire"?

Sri Lanka have mostly been healthy on the field, in world events, but they have had to play without pay, rise above alleged corruption in the board and, most importantly, recover from various heartbreaks in finals. Since 2007, they have lost three finals of World Cups. Lesser teams would have been broken beyond despair. Yet, here they are, playing their fourth World Cup final in five years. Will they finally break that jinx?

Watch out for

Mahela Jayawardene tamed the raging turner in the semi-final like a ringmaster does his animals. If the pitch is anywhere close to that difficult for Twenty20 batting, keep an eye out for his artistry. And there is no reason why the pitch shouldn't be a repeat of the semi-final. Sri Lanka are the home side, and they should get that advantage.

In the final, Chris Gayle will have to tackle an attack more varied than he has done so far in the tournament. It won't be as easy to pick the bowlers he wants to hurt as it was against Australia. Sri Lanka will stretch Gayle to the fullest, but Gayle has already apologised to the host country for beating their team, hasn't he?

Team news

Sri Lanka will have seen Gayle batter the left-arm orthodox spin of Xavier Doherty. Rangana Herath has a carrom ball in his armoury but it will still need a big heart to persist with Herath even though he took three wickets in the semi-finals. Jayawardene will have to make the call between Herath and Akila Dananjaya. It's experience, poise and guile against the unknown.

Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Mahela Jayawardene (capt.), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Jeevan Mendis, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Rangana Herath/Akila Dananjaya

West Indies will be tempted to retain the XI that thrashed Australia. Gayle pulled up with a side strain, but if the man can walk, he will play. Andre Russell's one poor over might have given West Indies headaches, but it is unlikely he will be replaced by Fidel Edwards.

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Darren Sammy (capt.), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Samuel Badree.

Pitch and conditions

Expectedly the pitch for the second semi-final didn't assist spinners as much as the one for the first. It made sense too, for Sri Lanka to win the trial by spin, and then not allow the other semi-finalist a proper experience of what it is going to be like. Expect more turn on Sunday, and rightly so.

Stats and trivia

  • Gayle has already hit the most sixes in this tournament, 16, and is only 30 runs behind the leading run-getter, Shane Watson, who scored 249.
  • Jayawardene has hit the most fours, 27.
  • Ajantha Mendis is the joint-highest wicket-taker at 11, along with Watson, and his nearest competitors still alive in the tournament are Lasith Malinga and Ravi Rampaul, who have taken eight wickets each.

    Quotes

"Nobody is going to make Chris Gayle miss that final tomorrow. He has played through pain for us many times before and tomorrow won't be any different."
Darren Sammy confirms what everyone expected

"Everyone wanted us in the finals when we played our first game in Hambantota. I don't think that has died down, and as a team we've handled that pretty well."
Mahela Jayawardene states what everyone expected

"Were we helpless? Probably. Chris Gayle can do that to you."
George Bailey confirms what everyone knows

Sri Lanka is too good a side to beaten by Windies. However nothing is impossible in cricket. I (like many other Pakistanis) support friendly Sri Lanka and want them winning WT20 Cup.

If Gayle and Pollard strike half-decent form, they will steam roll any T20 side in the world. I can't forget the mauling of the Aussies, in the last 5 overs, of their semi-final clash.

  • on October 7, 2012, 12:20 GMT

SL Lions will be the champions!!! WI fully depends on Gale... Mahela has a trap to get Gale. We don't won't to loose out 4th world-cup finals...

  • Aussie_Cricket on October 7, 2012, 12:19 GMT

The Lankans if they play their game should take the trophy.

Like Australia base their success on Watson the Windies base theirs on Gayle. If Sri Lanka can overcome Gayle's colossal form (and his silly dance) then the rest of the Windies won't be quite as confident as they were against Australia.

Also Sri Lanka don't have the serious flaws that Australia currently have (i.e. vs spin), they can play both bowling types especially playing at home in conditions that are becoming more and more Sri Lankan. Lastly Mahela is the greatest captain Sri Lanka have ever had (yes even better than Donut lover Ranatunga), Sammy's captaincy is buoyed by his players rather than any tactical nous.

That being said... T20 is a funny game where not every outcome is the right one.

  • magicumesh on October 7, 2012, 12:18 GMT

Come on WINDIES!!!! One Billion INDIANS are behind you.... Badree, Narine, Rampaul, Ramdin.... 4 Players of Indian Origin... Our Own RCB's Galye, CSK's Bravo, DD's Russel....What else we need.... Lions will only roar, Windies will dance with the cup, God willing.

  • colombo_SL on October 7, 2012, 6:22 GMT

In Mahela's game plan there should be a place to hide Malinga away from ball. Today, players simply don't drop catches. A drop catch means, They drop the much anticipated World Cup & they drop hopes of millions of people. Come on Mali, show your colours again.

  • bipulkumar on October 7, 2012, 6:02 GMT

I don't think West Indies are in right frame of mind to win this final. They are thinking ahead. They are thinking what if they win it. They should realize that this match is the toughest challenge they have faced in this tournament. Home team, playing on custom made pitch, with full crowd support and with array spinners at their disposal, they will be very hard to beat. They must focus hard on the match and strategize well.

  • on October 7, 2012, 6:02 GMT

yeah!!! SL Lions will do it definitely, not to worry

  • colombo_SL on October 7, 2012, 6:01 GMT

  • phoenixsteve on October 7, 2012, 5:38 GMT

Although I am an England supporter this should be a great final. To me it doesn't matter who wins and I hope that this is the best team on the day? Windies represents the way to play this game. Sometimes naive, sometimes undisciplined but always ENTERTAINING and with a smile and swagger toboot! Sri Lanka is a wonderful country and full of warn friendly people. I was privilaged to spend a few weeks there in 2005 and vow to return one day? Indeed I would like to retire and live out my days there.... So however wins it will bring a smile to me face! What a breath of fresh air this final is if you compare to say an Indiamn team, an Australian tean, or a Pakistani team .... even (dare I say it) an England team! Whoever wins tomorrow... CRICKET will be the true winner! I can't wait and goood luck to both sides - but I'll secretly be cheering for Sri lanka and hoping that the Windies prove me wrong an entertain as only they can!

If WI wins the TOSS TODAY AND BAT first... SL Captain Mahela Will even scare to play T20 in dream. They win to Pakistan by digging the pitch... SL is not a good team, only the pitch supporting them that's all.

@mihil rahatunga...seeing the record of sl against ind;its quite ovious u will support the opposition,,,anyways,,,who cares

  • on October 7, 2012, 5:07 GMT

SL start favourites if not for anything but for the enigmatic nature of WI team.history states that when Gayle has stormed in semis his winds have been taken out in the finals. a look at IPL stats will prove that. hope the match notwithstanding is a close one.

  • desilvac39 on October 7, 2012, 4:55 GMT

I am a Sri Lankan but I would like if West Indies win this final because they really need this win rather than Sri Lanka. But truth is Sri Lanka is very well balanced team than West Indies also their middle order never panic even their top 3 failed. West Indies batting mainly depend on Gayle and if he fail other batsmen couldn't hold the pressure. 200% sure Gayle will be remove within 1st three overs that's the reality. Anyway I wish all the very best to West Indies we need to see a exciting final. ( But I know final is one sided after removing Gayle early )

  • SunnyFernando on October 7, 2012, 4:47 GMT

The only way to beat WI is through a slow pitch since SL don't have the fire power WI has and WI will fail against SL spin attack.

  • on October 7, 2012, 4:45 GMT

I am Sri Lankan Muslim but I always support Pakistan Team only,Because, there is no any Muslim player in SL team and they have removed our former Mahroob.

  • Vikum72 on October 7, 2012, 4:39 GMT

Both teams can learn a lot about the pitch and the conditions from the women's final which will held on the same strip prior to the men's final. They can asses each player's capabilities and past performances in the tournament against today's performance and get an good idea about how the pitch is gonna behave.

  • SL-RokZ on October 7, 2012, 4:34 GMT

Windies was the most popular team in this T20 worldcup among the SL fans. They wanted to meet Windies in the final and they got them. Whoever win tonight it will show the strength and capability of small island nations that big bullies did not have.

Mind blowing article Sidharth Monga, hats off.

  • vhs123 on October 7, 2012, 4:20 GMT

WI winning the cup is foregone conclusion. Lets be clear, WI thoroughly deserves it.

Having said that, cricket lovers around the world should discount the SL team in the finals. The SL team provides false sense of accomplishment to the opposition teams. The team is below par. And that's one of the reasons for India's early exit. Indians kept believing that they were a better team after trashing the SL team around the world.

  • on October 7, 2012, 4:18 GMT

Sri Lanka Will this soooooo easily...... A team that depend on one player Never get success. Last time Windies won becoz Gayle stay there & Others hit freely.... But today Gayle will go on His first over & Story get changed.

You Rock Sri Lanka. Let's see.

WI - All indian fans and reasonable cricket lovers with you. SL - The undisputed runners up, aka, another humiliating defeat on the cards.

WI thoroughly deserves the cup. SL somehow sneaked into this final, purely on luck and some arithmetic. They did too in ODI WC finals last year, but got whipped up.

  • on October 7, 2012, 3:08 GMT

WI should play Dareen bravo instead of Russel for this match----plzzzzz post

  • Vikum72 on October 7, 2012, 2:59 GMT

@Randy Bridgeman: I do not agree to your comment about SL having 3 1/2 batsmen while WI batting all the way down to 9-10. SL too bat all the way down to Kula & in Angelo & Thisara we have 2 proven match winners. You only have to look back in to their exploits in Aus & SA. So that is 5 match winning batters. However, I do agree that if WI bat first & score above 170 it will become difficult for SL on these pitches. If SL bat first I recon they could defend 150-160.

  • on October 7, 2012, 2:34 GMT

I hope if we win this we could get over 2011 world cup loss, and relations with our neighbors would improve. BCCI could start that with sending players to SLPL. Otherwise be prepared to always strong support for the opposition whenever Indian cricket team travel to Srilanka.

  • sha119 on October 7, 2012, 2:19 GMT

what a surprise two of the most tiniest island who played cricket in world level reached to the final.its the 4th final since this millennium.2003,2009,2010 semi finalist and 2007,2009,2011 runners up.what a remarkable achievement just want finishing touch to hand on that trophy , what a place to do it in home in front of home crowd,to repeat 1996 glory back this is the time and today is the date.keep it up mahela you can and you will.

Our wishes with Srilannkan, since we couldn't achieve the final victory for few occasions within recent years. Hopefully srilanka wins the toss and set everything for victory with our well formed batsmen and amazing bowlers. God Bless Sri Lanka!!!

  • on October 7, 2012, 1:56 GMT

west indies will win they should bat first usually the team that bats first has been winning most of the time

  • nilb on October 7, 2012, 1:31 GMT

Chris Gayle has never gone berserk against Sri Lanka. He never could, there was Murali and Vass in the way. He cannot smash quality sensible experienced bowlers. After the semi-final against the Aussies we witnessed first ever "trash talk" from a experienced player in a International side. I don't know what he was thinking but see an abundance of overconfidence and ego that Sri Lanka could use for their advantage. Go Lions!!

When all the hype is peeled away, you have two teams hungry for victory. SL has 3 1/2 batsmen suited for this format of the game; WI bat all the way to 9 or 10. The Lankans have formidable but not unhittable spinners. However, they still have the edge in the bowling department, but they're not invincible as some would have us believe.

If Gayle gets going again, it's all over folks. WI bowlers will be able to defend 170-200+ if they reach a total in that range. By the way, SL is facing a similar situation to India who lost two of their key batsmen within days of each other. Another will retire in a year or two. SL's Big 3, Jayawardene, Sangakkara & Dilshan are all in their mid-30s. Though they're still playing well, they can't go on forever. What's going to happen when they depart?

I'm expecting a close game with WI holding their nerve to win in the end. Our men didn't come this far both geographically and in this tournament, to roll over and play dead to the home team. No siree.

  • gayansumeera2 on October 7, 2012, 0:41 GMT

Mahela Jayawardane is far better captain than Kumar Sagakkara tactically wise and intelligent wise.He doesn't panic at all in the field. In 2009 T20 final and 2011 WC final it was Sangakkara who led the team and 2007 it was Mahela. In the 2007 final Sri Lankans had the best chance, but Gilchrist and the rain ruined the match.Actually Sri Lanka could have chased that massive target somehow considering the way Jayasuriya and Sangakkara batted before the rain.My gut feeling is saying that SL will win the cup this time since MJ deserves to win a major title more than any other player in the world.

Windies need this win more than SL...... I hope this newly-inspired enthusiasm will resurrect the Windies to the glorious terror days of Michael Holding, et. al., .............

May the better team, the one that keeps their minds together amidst the conundrum, win!

  • on October 7, 2012, 0:29 GMT

The four most favorite teams for most Indians, I know of are : India, Pakistan, West Indies, & Sri Lanka. Though two are out, including their own, two are still in. The Indian interest in the match will be still there. As far as I am concerned, I love both the teams in the final, and look forward to a very entertaining match. It doesn't matter who wins. These two teams playing the final is good for world cricket. Especially, the entertaining cricket. Not the dull morose (but intense) surrogate wars! This will certainly be more enjoyable.

windies must drop russel and bring back SMith... what use does Russel have in the team?

  • Sinhaya on October 7, 2012, 0:11 GMT

@Parsuram, then what is India's unholy stand on DRS to keep it out of this world cup, when the whole cricket world is more than happy with DRS? India's stubbornness towards DRS is why many non Indians wanted India out of the semi finals. More justice will be served when DRS is used for all international matches.

  • Late-Cut on October 6, 2012, 23:35 GMT

@Posted by johnathonjosephs; well, you've got that right. Australian bowling attack consists of young and very inexperienced players. Only Watson is the experienced one, but he doesn't have a pace or variations, So W'indies sent them all over the park. On the other hand, SL possess very experienced, specialist bowling squad. And they don't play defensive. They always go for the kill. If you saw how Kulasekara attacked Gayle with off cutters, slow balls (sometimes 30km/h less than his normal pace) and etc, Gayle was literary helpless, and got out for 2. Middle order couldn't read Ajantha Mendis at all. I think Gayle made a very premature statement like he has already won the cup, knowing what he is up against very well. :)) I get the feeling that we will see the SL version of Gangnam style from Jeevan Mendis 2moro :P

  • on October 6, 2012, 23:17 GMT

Mendis carrom ball spins more than his offbreak, Jevan Mendis is leg break, Herath is left arm orthodox.... all 3 of them will trouble right hand batsmen and only 1 of the top 8 is left handed... my suggestion is to bring in Darren Bravo since he lefthanded and excellent against spin bowling and drop Charles...

Charles cannot play a proper cricket stroke, even when he made runs he soaked up a lot of dot balls an had a lot of edges and he cannot afford that luxury against the Sri Lankan bowling attack... Brin DARREN BRAVO! you can let Samuels or Ramdin open the batting with Gayle

  • on October 6, 2012, 23:13 GMT

The battle of the Islanders. Reggae vs Baila. Rum vs Arrack. Gangnam Gayle vs funky Malinga. Both teams have played some lovely cricket. They had some facinating contests with NZ and Pakistan. Mahela is probably the best captain going around at the moment. SL also has the home advantage. I am sure they will prepare a pitch to suit the home team. WI will have a big job in their hands. It will be lot of arrack but no Rum. GOOD LUCK SL and MAHELA. I am sure SL will also get lot of support from PAK fans.

yes we were at finals 3 times in last 5 years. only losses. but were away from our mother land. sri lanka is a cricket loving country . no one fired any property of a team member because of losses. we knew it is hard. but we will not give it away even to god when we are ready .West Indies may have fire power. but we have more organizing power. galye may be able to play his own game against Australia with a poor bowling attack . but not against you can find 5 out of 11 who can ball 20th over for a score less than 10 .we have defeated WI 4 times before even when this same Gayle standing tall in 2009 semi finals. you are having questions. we are having answers. this may not be the most perfect fit today. but having all power to beat this Giant hitting unorganised west Indian 11 .No worriers there will 35000 in the ground, 20000 on CR and FC. 20 million over TV.no one can beat this .!! cheers mahela and Crew. will meet you Tuesday .:)

  • Mutukisna on October 6, 2012, 21:33 GMT

It is such a fascinating situation that I could not resist a comment. The match is between the power and brute force of WI vs the guile and subtlety of SL. In short, it is a contest between an overwhelmingly attacking batting side against an attacking bowling side with two class batsmen. As a SL fan the only country I would not mind SL losing to is the WI Team, in order for them to restore and relive past glories. The whole cricketing world love West Indian cricket. I hope they win a major competition soon. But hopefully not this time! Anyway SL fans, win or lose this time, a tiny island like ours should be proud of the consistency it has shown in World Cricket. Which country can boast of 4 World Cup finals in 5 years even if we are wrongly called cricket's chokers with SA? If a country reaches its peak in Cricket it has to play SL in a final to win a World Cup 20/20 or 50 over ODI. Long live Sri Lankan Cricket and its frequent innovations and contributions to the glorious game!

  • johnathonjosephs on October 6, 2012, 20:55 GMT

The real question is... Can Gayle really explode against the likes of Malinga, Kulasekera, and Mendis? I think Rampaul will hold a Huge role in all of this. If he can take out Mahela/Dilshan/Sanga tomorrow cheaply, Sri Lanka will be in HUGE trouble

  • on October 6, 2012, 20:51 GMT

Time is drawing near . SL'/WI , let the game begin . Put us at the "edge" of our seat with evey play of that cricket ball .

  • johnathonjosephs on October 6, 2012, 20:50 GMT

Though I want West Indies to do well, I think they will suffer against the experienced Sri Lankan bowling. Australia has a very inexperienced and young bowling atack: Doherty, Cummins, and Starc. The rest of the bowlers are part timers. Even though they have talent, experience is needed in World Cups. Sri Lanka has Malinga, Kulasekera, Herath, and even Mendis who had been exposed to international matches quite a while back. They will also be captained by Mahela (plus Dilshan and Sanga) who are very experienced players. The West Indies side is also a young side and the most experienced player in the lineup at the moment is Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels. If Gayle and Samuels can bat sensible, West Indies have a chance, but if they throw their wickets away, the lions will pounce when they smell that first blood. Looking for a performance from Gayle, but history shows that he has not really shined in Finals. We shall see tomorrow

  • alvinbvi on October 6, 2012, 20:47 GMT

Chris Gayle is the Predator (check out his hair style) BE AFRAID SRI LANKA - BE VERY AFRAID!

  • on October 6, 2012, 20:45 GMT

West Indies to be flummoxed by astute Jayawardene ( and low bounce/turning pitch ) in the Finals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although, Gayle & Pollard decimated the Aussies in semis and fire-works were "VISUALLY IMPRESSIVE", deep inside "the Pallekele SCARS" would still be fresh in memory. There is no reason to reverse the form especially on a dying pitch! Despite all the verbal rhetorics ( from Gayle ), Sri Lanka pack too many guns and they will be dancing in the streets long into night . Expecting a INTENSE CRICKET game / A CRACKER ! Best of luck (from Karachi) to BOTH teams.

  • Juan_Fernando on October 6, 2012, 20:33 GMT

Near perfect tournament so far. We had some great matches and no one can disagree. My only beef is with SA's lack of performance, a team that I'm a fan of very much just as much as WI. Ask me to choose between SA and WI for my 2nd fav spot? I wouldn't be able to. Absolutely loving the anticipation both on net, overseas and around the country. Come hell or high water there will be an afterparty :P SL all the way...

  • Kays789 on October 6, 2012, 20:27 GMT

it seems to me like the only team that can tame the power hitters in the windies line up is SL. they've got the bowlers, the experience and one of the best captains in the game currently if not the best, to handle gayle and co. they already proved it once in this tournament. something tells me that experience and all round ability in the SL line up would prevail over the over-reliance on gayle and co. anyway here's hoping for a 180 plus score from both teams and a super over finish! that would be the ultimate thrill ride and a quality end to the worldT20!

I wanted India to win it this time :-( India is carrying too many passengers, who are just playing based on past glory and not any real performances - Zaheer, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj, have to go and make way for new faces. Anyway, good luck to teams for the finals. Looking forward to watching Mendis VS Gayle. Hope the pitch is better than the SL-Pak one.

  • Ra_Thore on October 6, 2012, 19:36 GMT

Gayle has done enough to take Windies up to this level. Now, if anything, it will be the rest of the team regardless of his performance.

  • avmd on October 6, 2012, 19:35 GMT

I'm not a Westindians, but being in USA, got to support our neighbors, go West Indies, cup is yours.

  • on October 6, 2012, 19:35 GMT

If Windies click, SL is going down for sure. SL batsmen seem like kids in front of West Indians who have immense power. Not only Gayle, but in forms of Bravo, Pollard, Samuels and Russells. If they pick SL bowlers, I dont think SL will have anywhere to hide. Sl's gonna chase 200 is 16 overs? LOL what a joke. Only a side like WI and somewhat AUS-watson can do that. Again I'd say its a game of buts and ifs tomorrow. Both teams have the chance, not writing any1 off! May the best team win.

  • Jaffa79 on October 6, 2012, 19:31 GMT

I hope its a great final! Both teams have played the best cricket. Tough choice who to support: SL deserve it due to their consistency but it'd be nice to see the Windies get some success. Hopefully, it might kickstart a revival for the Windies in Test cricket as well. Oh and kandykolla, you mention that England are good are football! What have you been watching? We are dire!

Gayle can't win against SL. I am an Indian but I am 100% sure about this. SL has a lot of variations in their bowlers and to beat all of them will be impossible. It is not enough even if Gayle scores a 50. If WI has to win, Gayle should score atleast 80 which is IMPOSSIBLE.

  • Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on October 6, 2012, 19:27 GMT

22 yards of "Premadasa SANDY BEACH" can give Jayawardene the last laugh and Lankans will be dancing to Baila music!!!!!! While the cricket world continues to reverberate at Gayle & Pollard POWER HITTING against Aussies, it would be easy to forget the claims of S/Lankans on a slower pitch. Make no mistake, "Pallekele 29 Sept." was a far better surface to bat than what the Calypso will encounter tomorrow. "Premadasa SANDY BEACH" will be more to S/Lanka's liking (blunting the power hitters). Toss, Technique to bat/play spinners & Nerves will have a major impact. S/Lanka ticks all the boxes ! Thoughts of what the Premadasa scenes will be like if/when Jayawardene emulates the feats of 1996 ( WC - Lahore) by succeeding in a repeat of Pallekele would inspire a primetime drama scriptwriter !!!! ALL THE BEST TO BOTH THE TEAMS - HOPE & WISH THAT CLASH BE A HUMDINGER and goes to the wire !

jayawadena has handled his bowlers well, while sammy, since the new zealand game has done much better in that regards but not for the entire 20overs.

much is being made of sri lanka`s jinx, but as far as i know windes have not beaten sri lanka in a t20 match, think wi are 0-5. before,i would say bowl 1st and the pressure of knowing gayle,is in the opposition, would see the sri lanka top 3 take risks.....but i`m fearful sammy might over bowl certain players by giving them one over too many in a row or bring in a bowler at the wrong time. samuels, rampaul and russell have all gone for over 20 runs in an over before in this world cup, thanks to poor bowling and field placements.

smith in for charles i say

  • on October 6, 2012, 18:55 GMT

Have no fears...it will be a "spin friendly" wicket & even if we(SL) scores 140+ (as we did against Paks), that's good enough.(that's batting first). In case, we bat second, then you negotiate Sunil N for 20 runs & even if WI score (by any chance) 200+(on a spinning wicket like Thursday, an improbable task), we will still overtake it in the remaining 16 overs. That is the normal game plan. But anything is possible in a game of 20-20 Cricket.

On paper, SL has the better team - having played and overcome all types of pitches SL will be expected to have the better of WI easily. Unless, WI has another flash in the pan, SL should have a cake walk. Pretty cheeky of gayle to apologise before hand. On the other hand no SL cricketer has commented. Hence - Gayle! - you got to back you threat up!! Good luck to both teams - WI, in my opinion, needs more luck than SL to get through the last hurdle.

Since many SL fans rooted against India throughout this tournament, me being an Indian fan will reciprocate the favour. I will root for WI against SL, though I wouldn't mind if SL win the trophy. In the end, it's only a sport. Some Sri Lankans had a cheap bit of fun celebrating India's exit from the competition. That has had a lot to do with the chain of defeats India inflicted on their team in recent times. I honestly want a good game of cricket here. I still want the WI to beat the Sri Lankans and I will be more than pleased if that happens. It's been a while since the WI enjoyed any kind of global success. Their tiny islands deserve some happiness. I have a lot of West Indian friends here in Canada and I will be rooting for the Caribbean. GO WI !

  • Htc-Android on October 6, 2012, 17:27 GMT

Sri lanka should target west indies bowling attack. try to get gayle early as possible. bowl tight line and length to them. bcoz they will only try to play big shot, they r not good at running between the wickets. give atleast 6 overs for one of Mathews or perera to bat.also herath should play. i know it would be very dangerous to play a left arm spinner against gayle. But herath is a clever and experienced spinner than dhananjaya. so i think he can handle that situation. If they do all these surely Sri lanka will win the world cup.

Good luck to both teams.. Am thinking Mhaela shud take a gamble if it is a turning to wkt to include all 3 spinners , ajanta ,herath and akila , and may have to drop lahiru .. this may create pressure among the wi batsmen to think they have to take their chances and will create chances and lose their wickets in this pressure encounter ..would be worth the gamble .. fortune fears the brave

@parsuram - I cant agree more with you man , its clear Australia and Pakistan denied India a deserving SF spot ,but it was great to see both of them knocked out in SF ,it would have hurt to see either of them playing the finals ,Sri Lanka would have done the same if they were in our group ,but i cant blame them know . I am happy that these two deserving teams will play the T20 world cup final tomorrow . I want WI to win but i have a feeling it would be Sri Lanka ,playing at Premadasa with the home crowd ,and they would be playing their 4th final in 5 years ,so they deserve it and maybe destiny has it . It would be great if it happens especially for Mahela jayawardene and Kumar Sangakara . I would be supporting WI though . Whoever may win it promises to be an Cracking Final . Best of Luck to both the teams . Dont forget one man Simon Taufel his last match ,hats off to him for what has been a magnificent umpiring career ,hoping he too has a memorable farewell .

    1. Please replace Smith for Charles. Charles is consuming ballls in the early overs and not being able to rotate the strike. I believe Snith is better than Charles , he can play big shots, can rotate strike, if needed can roll his arm for few middle overs and not last but the least he has experience to face malinga coz he is the ipl team mate of slinga. So he is better choice thn Charles.

Go WI Go bring the cup. We all indians supporting U. All the best and hit SL bowlers out of the park :P

SL would feel confident as they have the home advantage. The pitch would be tailored to fit their spinners. All SL have to do is show up for the game and stick to their formula. Also it will be hard for WI to be consistent in back to back pressure games. The odds are against WI but there is something about WI that makes you feel that they are going to lift the cup.

  • pakcricketgirl on October 6, 2012, 16:48 GMT

  • kitten on October 6, 2012, 16:46 GMT

SL won against WI at Pallekele on Sept 29 when they restricted WI to 129, and scored the runs to win by 7 wickets. So they have the measure and tactics to beat the WI, albeit at a different ground. But considering spin will play an important part, and even though WI have brilliant hitters, I feel fairly sure that the loss at Pallekele will play a part in WI's thinking. If Gayle is dismissed early, half the battle will be won. However, as a neutral spectator, I look forward to an entralling encounter, and may the better team win. Can't wait to see Gayle in full 'storm', again.

There is only one winner & its Sri Lanka... Something miracously need to go wrong for Lankans to lose the match.... Sri Lankans are in a superior league & a class to windies... I think it will be a one sided final & Sri Lanka should have no problem against this Windies side...! & to be fair to this Windies side they will be losing to the tournament favourites & best ODI & T20 team since 2007...! This is the 5th worldcup since 2007 (both odi & t20 combined) & Sri Lanka has been finalists in 4 of them & nobody has come even close... Hopefully the end result for Sri Lankans will change this time...!

  • yorkshirematt on October 6, 2012, 16:42 GMT

Really don't mind who wins this one as a neutral . Have great respect for both teams and "nations". Looking forward to a good game of cricket.

It's been an exciting cricket so far on this tiny island ! Thanks Sri Lanka for hosting such an exciting event ! You're a beautiful cricket loving country & a warm host ! I put 50/50 for both WI & Lanka. Both are exciting cricketing teams & my good wishes & heart goes with both. Although, I am a die hard Indian Cricket fan, I simply can understand that India paid the price of not depending on its own guts & being over reliant on others, to qualify. Asian teams..Pak..Sri Lanka & Bangladesh will always have full love & support from India...We'll always be an excellent neighbors... --Indian Cricket Fan

  • timohyj on October 6, 2012, 16:22 GMT

Gayle will have a hard time against malinga and mendis, but Mathews and herath or dananjaya ( whichever one plays) will be in trouble. While it would be dangerous to go with a left arm spinner against gayle I think herath would do better than dananjaya because dananjaya doesn't spin the ball either way and herath is a very clever bowler. His flight is very difficult to pick

  • on October 6, 2012, 16:20 GMT

West Indies most attacking team vs Sri Lanka best defensive team.... Interesting battle. For the sake of the game I hope Windies triumph.

  • Sinhaya on October 6, 2012, 16:20 GMT

  • Sarangarajan on October 6, 2012, 16:19 GMT

After a long long time,we have seen a cricket match yesterday . albeit T20, played by the Windies in true carribbean spirit. What a pleasure it gave. Have seen matches / heard matches on radio broadcast when TV was not popular in India those days, involving the greats like Kallicharan , Sobers, Kanhai, Lara, Viv Richard, Hall, Holder, Holding, Roberts - et all playing cricket and enjoying every moment of it. Windies is one team ,in cricket, whose good performance is appreciated by all the cricketing lovers in the world irrespective of their origin despite the fact that all other teams were battered by the carribbean pace battery and their bowlers pummeled in to submission by their supreme- natural batsmen, time and again in the 70s-80s and early 90s. Windies Cricket gives uninhibited pleasure when watched when they are in full flow. This Windies team deserves at least this T20 World cup for the sheer pleasure they give you in this format.Best of luck Sammy &co. Go- get It

@jasonpete, I owe you a special thanks for your cricket passion in spite of coming from a non cricket playing nation. I went to watch the semi finals in Colombo last night and saw a fellow from Tanzania who had come all the way and he was cheering West Indies (I asked if he was from Trinidad). I will be at the venue tomorrow too and just cant wait till tomorrow evening indeed. Whatever you see the extreme harsh comments between Indian and Sri Lankan fans, the reason is the anonymity that internet offers. I am 100% sure that the key board fighters of both sides will be warm and diplomatic should they meet face to face.

  • Parsuram on October 6, 2012, 15:52 GMT

It will be interesting to see who the Pakistani and Australian cricket fans support for tomorrow's final. Even to the children, it is obvious that Pakistan, Sri Lanka and even Australia have formed a sublte, unholy alliance or pact to prevent India from advancing into the semi-finals. However, justice will be served when West Indies crush the Lankans tomorrow. Life is not about creating alliances and pacts to prevent a person or team from progressing. While arguments can be made to justify this action, it must be said that cricket is still the gentleman's game and, at the end of the day, winning fairly without an unholy collusion is the best option! Keep politics and personal grudges out of cricket!

  • cricketlover76 on October 6, 2012, 15:50 GMT

I am an Indian and I really hope Sri Lanka win it this time. They have had heart breaks in 4 major tournament finals since 2007. It would be a fitting tribute to Kumar and mahela - 2 great batsmen and wonderful ambassadors of their country. Go Sri Lanka!! Let the roar of the lion resound across the Premadasa tomorrow

  • rai_xi on October 6, 2012, 15:46 GMT

I dont know who deserve to win T20 world cup. But I feel SL required to make the pitch as slow as possible inorder to win. In semi final SL prepared one of the worst pitch and both teams played very poor cricket. WI on otherhand used muscle power to overcome the pitch and Aussies. To overcome this muscle power SL has to prepare a slow pitch and that they will certainly do that. On normal wickets this SL bowling is just like Indians. Below par. Since Murali & Vaas, SL very rarely win at home. Whatever victories they had all orchestered by either Sanga or Mahela. Malinga does not look to be in great form. WI also doesnot have great bowling and feilding. Whoever wins,we wii have a new champ. good luck both teams

  • Karnain on October 6, 2012, 15:45 GMT

I think SL should replace Rangan Herath with Akila Dhananjaya as WI are not so good against mystery spinners. I still remember the 5 balls Kieron Pollard faced against Ajantha Mendis

  • bumsonseats on October 6, 2012, 15:43 GMT

Either way it's not going to be a disappointing outcome tomorrow. So keep calm & enjoy the action. Good Luck to both teams. (Little bit more for Sri Lanka.)

Everyone will be enjoying my dream, while I am in England. We grew up wanting to playlike WI team of 70s and 80s. Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Marshall (RIP), Greenidge, Garner, Gomez, Kanhai oh they wre the gods of my era. Seeing their team in the final with our team after 30 years on our own back yard! Oh man, I have lived my dreams. Thanks for all the teams.

  • Master_Mihil on October 6, 2012, 15:32 GMT

It's a shame these teams came to the final instead of one of those two teams and an opponent who has a more successful record in world cups. Both teams deserve world cup for their own reasons. Hope SL win this, because they just have to, otherwise they will get the choker tag for rest of their careers. Windies are totally the underdog here. It's windies that have to rise against the tide and win this match against an opponent who have beaten them often. So naturally everybody loves the underdog! I don't like the way SL is portrayed here, i would have very much like India or Australia in the final because i too like windies and gayle very much.

  • on October 6, 2012, 15:18 GMT

A great semi-final win by the Windies. To beat the Aussies the way they did, will do their confidence no harm at all. Facing the Lankans on their home soil will be a different proposition though. They had a taster of it in the super-8s, with Sri Lanka's mystery spin being the key. For the Windies, i'd drop Johnson Charles. The young man deserves to play in the final, but i feel he'll be out of his depth against the variety of SLs bowlers, i hope he proves me wrong, but i doubt it. The choice between Smith, Simmons or Darren B to open with Gayle, whoever's the most comfortable against spin should get the nod. Otherwise the team remains unchanged.

  • stormy16 on October 6, 2012, 14:08 GMT

Its ironic that two teams who have experienced total chaos in the last 12 months would be in the final and its packed with color and flair - just goes to show the value of flair in the limited over game. If WI played like yesterday I am afraid SL will have no answers! That was a monstor performance by the Windies and exactly the reason why they were one of the favorites. They'll be impossible to beat but SL is one team that has the variety (Pakistan being the other) to tame the Windies. SL cannot get in to a slog fest with Windies, infact no team can, and SL are not a slog team. Their strength is defending or chasing a 175ish total. Both teams rely on key players. Obviously Galye is on his own and can win the game on his own but others are Samuels, Narine and Pollard for the Windies and Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan, Malinga and Mendis for SL. Thw wicket will be a major factor and a SL V Pak like wicket will see the Windies struggle while a WI V Aus final will see SL struggle to reign in WI.

  • johnathonjosephs on October 6, 2012, 13:42 GMT

Cricket fans could not ask for a better Final. The only problem I have is: who to cheer for? Do I cheer for the Sri Lankans, a small Island that have produced world cricketers and consistently make Finals of Huge tournaments looking for healing after a prolonged blood civil war? Or should I cheer for the West Indians, an group of islands that have been unstoppable in the past, only to fall to the lowest point imaginable, looking for their past glory? Either way, both teams have done their share and it will be a win for any real cricket fan in the world, regardless of the outcome. My gut feeling is that cricket fans are divided 50/50 over support, unlike the 2011 Final where it was 1 billion for India and the rest of the world for Sri Lanka

  • on October 6, 2012, 13:41 GMT

Wow? So many expectations for the final, both teams are ready and will give it their best shot but cricket is all about the day itself, little fielding mishaps can happen to both teams, nerves would be on each and every player, officials, referee, spectators and every one involved in the game, so good luck to both teams, may the best one win. even though sl lose 3 finals , entire cricketing world is jealous about srilanka's performance in icc world cups, so now whole world is crying for a west indies win, and i know what u will say when we beat them,,, u will say pitch heavily favored Sl, u will talk about umpiring errors, and u will use every single word in the dictionary to insult sl win, but the truth is, since 1992, we have only missed out 2 wc's, in all other wc's we are at-least reached semi finals, only team to do so, and now no one can stop us, its written in the stars,, Srilanka is World t20 champs,,,,,,, whether u like it or not,

Sri Lanka have beaten the WI in many WC games even in their own backyard let alone having beaten them twice during this tournament itself. If you feed fodder to a chap like Gayle as Aussies did, no wonder what you get in return but do not think Mahela is immature as was Bailey & men.Sri Lanka certainly will win the cup handsomely. lot depend on the pitch, hopefully the pitch is different than we saw in Sri Pak SF ..then only we can expect a competition...srilanka have to realize winning on their home soil always is not a big achievement, I want WI to win they are very good entire tournament

Wow? So many expectations for the final, both teams are ready and will give it their best shot but cricket is all about the day itself, little fielding mishaps can happen to both teams, nerves would be on each and every player, officials, referee, spectators and every one involved in the game, so good luck to both teams, may the best one win.

As much as my heart would break if SL loses, I would like WI to win the match.. simply b'cos it would mean much more to the WI fans and the cricketing world.. All best windies coming from a SL fan..
