Yuvraj named in T20 squad, Rohit dropped from Test team

India batsman Yuvraj Singh has been named in India's T20 squad for the home series against New Zealand and the ICC World Twenty20 next month in Sri Lanka, marking a return to cricket after battling with cancer. VVS Laxman, Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Piyush Chawla and Ajinkya Rahane have been included for the home Tests against New Zealand later this month. Rohit Sharma has been left out of the Test squad after a lean period with the bat.

Yuvraj, who last played for India during the home Tests against West Indies, was passed fit when the selection committee met in Mumbai to pick the respective squads. During his recovery from cancer, Yuvraj said last month that Twenty20 would be ideal format to mark his return to competitive cricket. However, he was picked despite lacking in match practice.

The Twenty20 squad had a few surprises, most notably the recall of the legspinner Chawla (in both squads), offspinner Harbhajan Singh and the seamer L Balaji. Chawla last played for India during the 2011 World Cup, and his previous Test goes back a further three years. Balaji, who suffered career-threatening injuries through the previous decade, last played for India in 2009. What may have boosted his selection was a successful IPL 2012, during which he played a key role in Kolkata Knight Riders' title win.

Harbhajan was dropped after failing to make an impression on the tours of West Indies and England last year. His form in domestic cricket wasn't encouraging either. He was ignored for the Tests, but the T20s will give him a chance to stage a comeback in all three formats. He also lends experience to India's spin attack.

Laxman's future as a Test batsman was in doubt after a poor tour of Australia, where he only managed 155 runs in eight innings. Rohit did not get a chance in any of those games, but Rahul Dravid's retirement opened the door not just for him but for a few other young batsmen hoping to break into the Test team. However, Rohit failed to make a mark in the recently concluded limited-overs series in Sri Lanka, possibly jeopardising his Test selection. Pujara's batting for India A in the West Indies made it hard for the selectors to ignore him. He was already earmarked as a Test middle-order prospect.

Rahane, who sparkled during the IPL, was left out of the Twenty20 squad but included for the Tests as a reserve opener. Ishant too returns from a layoff, after skipping the IPL to recover from an ankle surgery. Suresh Raina is back in India's Test plans, after being ignored for the Australia tour.

Kris Srikkanth, in his last selection meeting as chairman of selectors, said: "We have picked the best possible Test team. We looked at the conditions (in Sri Lanka) for the World T20. We feel that we have picked a team that will win us the World Cup. We are very happy Yuvi (Yuvraj) has been declared fit. In 2011 World Cup, he was the Man of the Series. He is a crucial factor from India's point of view."

This selection marks the end of a long and traumatic period for Yuvraj. His issues began with breathing difficulties, nausea and bouts of vomiting blood during India's successful run through the 2011 World Cup, which he ended as the player of the tournament. Six months later he was diagnosed with a rare for of cancer - mediastinal seminoma - and subsequently underwent chemotherapy in the US. He returned to India in April and began training at the NCA in Bangalore in June.

India play two Tests and two Twenty20s against New Zealand before heading to Sri Lanka for the World Twenty20.

Is Mr.Nohit Sharma a permanent member in the team?

  • on August 13, 2012, 17:58 GMT

For T20 WC instead of Rohit better to select Ambati Rayadu or Manvinder Bisla. They are better option than Rohit and they can keep which would helpful to Dhoni. Rohit should go and play First Class Cricket to gain his confidence like last year.

Frankly regarding the Test Team I do not understand a thing. I genuinely believe that MS Dhoni, R.Ashwin & I. Pathan are the most capable players batting at No. 6, 7 & 8 against the Kiwis in the upcoming tour. It would have given ample chance to play 2 good seamers, read Zaheer and either of Umesh Yadav or Praveen Kumar, and a better attacking spinner than Ashwin in Pragyan Ojha. The backup spinner could have been either Rahul Sharma or Amit Mishra. Ishant Sharma and Piyush Chawla are wrong selections. Then my top 5 would have been - Sehwag, Gambhir, Laxman, Tendulkar and Kohli. But Dhoni has always been uncomfortable with 5 bowlers. In that case I think either of R.Ashwin/I.Pathan should be sacrificed for C.Pujara. A.Rahaney along with S.Badrinath or even W.Saha could have been the extra batsmen. There was no place for Raina too.

@landl47 - Oh please. Ajinkya Rahane is a perfect example for what you said. He has proven that T20 does not necessarily require slogging, and that you can score heavily with a good technique. I would like to rate him as India's Mahela Jayawardene. We have plenty of talent to come after Sehwag, Tendulkar, VVS and Zaheer retire. I'm VERY disappointed that the selectors did not choose Irfan Pathan for the Tests after that awesome show in Sri Lanka.

Harbhajan, Piyush, and Balaji don't deserve a place in the team! Ojha and Rahul Sharma should have been retained. Praveen Kumar should have been in Balaji place (The ball swings a lot in SL)

When those in their late 30s (Tendulkar, Laxman) and those in their mid-thirties (Sehwag, Zaheer) are gone, what's left? Not very much. Already we're seeing comments about players being picked because they did well in the IPL. How many test defeats does it take before India learns that T20 cricket destroys the techniques of both batsmen and bowlers? I watched two balls of the IPL this year. Dhoni played the second of these by opening his front foot to point at mid-wicket, going down on one knee and hitting with his bat horizontal at a straight, medium-pace ball on off-stump, which comprehensively bowled him. Dhoni's shot was appalling and the bowler did nothing but bowl straight- no pace, no swing, no seam. Maybe that works in the IPL, but in test cricket? India is in for a long, hard road.

ok agreed may be they have picked laxman giving him a good platform to retire in front of home crowd but why chawla i mean most of his deliveries dont even reach the batsman fully(how can one forget when flintoff was toying and hitting his deleveries for maximum in test series in india),he balls short, lacks variety, does not want to learn from his mistakes, mishra would have been a better choice but no they want chawla to score a hundred like bhajji did last time against the similar opposition, when all the stalwarts fail(which would be very rare) at least in india against an. Chawla has benifitted from his friendship with dhoni, guys dont be surprised if rp singh is even back for the next series against england and austrailia, Thankfully this was chika's final series as chairman of selectors. I had been a great fan of his attacking batting but now is batting on a sticky wicket. one thing most of us would agree that dhoni had been an apple of his eye. Both have'nt let each other down.

  • akbarbirbal007 on August 12, 2012, 4:22 GMT

again a biased selection what is laxman doing after a dismal (to say the least) outing in england and austrailia how long will he regain his place in the squad just on that epic 281 needs to be seen.Frankly speaking the selectors lack the outlook and the courage to pick a team on merit, when it comes to taking a stand on the tainted players they are a different bunch of people but its a complete U-turn in the case of selection matters. This was an ideal series to blood new players, some of the experienced players who have nothing else to prove in the domestic circuit (badrinath, kaif, parvinder aawana to name a few) a much needed longer run.But what did they do they again pick lackluster laxman, chawla.

In the current and future Squad : Current selection is almost fine but if there is a few change happen as given below.

On Test : Irfan Pathan(All rounder),Kaif,Jaffer,Dinesh Karthik (Back Up keeper and usefull batsmen),Badrinath,Abinav should have given more chances.

T20 and 50 overs format: Dinesh Karthik (Back Up keeper and usefull batsmen),Rahane,Yusuf Pathan,Uttappa,Dhawan,Rahul Sharma. All these players should have given more chances.

Rohit Sharma..Enough..Enough..Rest him for sometime.Piyush Chwala > nothing to say much because he has done nothing expect for the team management.Thank God Sreeshanth is not around.Let him play domestic cricket for some year.

when are we going to see a fast bowling alrounder in test matches for India even if India plays at home..even in Indian pitches old ball still swings.. if we have couple of such fast bowling alrounders..India will be a strong team in both home and overseas conditions. Please please selectors take this season as an opportunity to develop good fast bowling alrounders (at least two)..

Good to see after two drubbings at the hands of good sides that India are ringing the changes by dropping the only guy who didn't play any games. But hey with a few more years of experience I'm sure Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman and Zaheer will develop into players good enough to lead India to victory overseas.

  • manisacumen on August 11, 2012, 13:14 GMT

Some selections are baffling and some non-selections. Rayudu, Uthappa and Rahane deserved to be there in place of Rohit, Manoj. Chawla has done little of note but somehow i like him. i feel he has it in him to come good. But i feel sorry for Mishra who played so well in that test against england and looked good for the most deserving century by a bowler. Bad luck. He played better than Sachin that day. He was not good in the tests then but would have been good at home. Laxman my fav batsman of all time, should have owned moral responsibility for the debacle in australia and quit. he will do well at home. but he has let me down both in england and in australia. whether he does well or not now it is pathetic to watch him. Only rededmption for him if he survives for 2 more years is to prove he is still good in foreign conditions. Can never forgive him and Dravid for that australian shame. Bhajji and Balaji's selections are baffling. Balaji would have been better 4 tests

  • Rumy1 on August 11, 2012, 12:55 GMT

Jaffer is the best Test batsman who is not in Test XI. With Dravid gone Sehwag should come lower down and Jaffer should be opening the innings with Gambhir. Mukund, Rahane and Vijay are not in the same class as Jaffer. Jaffer's temperament, skill, range of shots, attitude and discipline are way ahead than these lesser mortals named here. Kaif is another talent who is stilll waiting for his chances. In the middle order with Dravid gone, Laxman soon to follow and Sachin just a few seasons away from retirement Kaif definitely deserves a look in for Tests - ahead of the likes of Raina. He is a proven middle order bat who has done well in whatever little chances that he has got. Pujara is a good selection. He deserves to be there. Aswhin is a good Ranji level offie who is good for a four over match. That is why he got exposed and stands sorted out by international batsmen. Now that Srikkant is out it is a matterof time Mohinder Amarnath moves him out. Bhajji must be in. India needs him.

Piyush Chawla, OH MY GOD!!! Whatever match he plays, India is sure going to lose..... Two big misses in the team, Ravindra Jadeja should be there for Chawla and Rahane for Rohit Sharma....... I hope Rohit and Chawla do not get any game or Indian Team will be weaker........and easier to beat...

  • QingdaoXI on August 11, 2012, 9:08 GMT

For t-20 Squad also we need some changes 1) Dhoni (Captain) 2) Gambhir (Vice-Captain), 3) Sehwag (Last Chance in world Tournament if fails drop him its high time) 4) Raina (Should Play One-down) 5) Kohli (Will struggle in t-20 vs teams other than subcontinet) 6) Yuvraj (Needs to match fit soon, if fit he will be hero as allrounder) 7)Irfan (Our Trump Card, Main Allrounder, with yuvi and irfan playing in same team team have good balance) 8)Zaheer (Is erratic in t-20, but his exp might come into count, i hope he will be fit)9.) Bhajji (He selcts himself as becuase of his exp but last chance) 10) Ashwin (Will be useful vs teams other than subcontinent.11) Dinda (Good but as a fourth seamer) 12) Tiwary (Sorry but Uttappa deserves to play in his place) 13) Rohit (down with form Rayudu deserves more. 14) Bala prone to injury Praveen will missed in swinging conditions15) Chawala as a lucky charm so send him with a team but not to play just as cheerleader instead play Yusuf Pathan.

  • on August 11, 2012, 9:04 GMT

@Dhekar01. You mentioned VVS & Sach, who should graciously vacate, giving chances to youngsters. I would like to add Zak too. Perhaps, Bhajji too ... Bhajji can say. " Thanks. but no thanks... let the youngsters get chances, I can guide them from the sidelines, if the Board wishes so"

  • QingdaoXI on August 11, 2012, 8:49 GMT

Bad Selection after 8-0 loss this is the time for India to make a new squad and give a confidence to younsters on home soil as we are going to play 10 test in row on our home soil, instead selectors go with same squad minus Dravid (Retired), Rohit (Drop due to in different ODI form). Selectors should have dared to drop Sehwag in first place then dhoni and laxaman becuase the were utter failure and only play in subcontinent conditions.Laxman as your are selected and playing first test vs NZ at home in Hyderabad should retire gracefully and give youngsters a chance to built a team for future.Zaheer and Sachin should plan and play only one format or if not fit than quit. Test Squad should be: Gambhir (C), Rahane, Pujara, Kohli, Rohit, Rayudu, Kaif, Badrinath, Saha,Umesh, Varun, Awana, Dinda, Ashwin, Ojha and Rahul. As Ishant was injured same as Sreesanth, he dont deserve place in squad he should play ranji first and prove with Sree.

  • on August 11, 2012, 8:14 GMT

Its not a bad selection except the inclusion of Mr. Rohit Sharma in T20 squad and exclusion of Rahane, Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa . It is unfair to leave out Rahane because he scored 25 runs in one of T20 and was involved in a vital partnership with Kohli after the loss of Gambhir. Mr.Rohit Sharma scored 13 runs in 5 innings including a golden duck. Still he is been treated as a wonderful player. I dont know whether selectors were in weekend mood while selecting the team. Balaji is a good inclusion. Nice to see him back in India colours. Test team is disappointing, same team which lost to Australia 0-4. Justice done? Still Dhoni is the captain of Test Team after 8 straight losses? Amazing selection.

  • on August 11, 2012, 7:53 GMT

This is injustice on Rahane.. Why is he not part of the T20 squad? Did he do bad in IPL? He was way better than Manoj n Rohit in IPL. He should signs when in England. He scores tons of runs in domestic. This selection baffles me.

As usual, selectors have proved myopic, clueless, gutless, spineless&utterly careless about Ind cricket or its future.Had feared this might happen that no body from the bunch of losers: Sehwag,VVS,Sachin,Ishant or even Dhoni would be touched despite the utterly shameful performances in 8 consecutive losses. The jokers(selectors) hoped that IPL will be a nice distraction and somehow ppl will forgive and forget. How in the hell Raina comes back except to accept indirectly that he's only good at home& better to give him the platform to come back into form.If so,Y not the same courtesy for Rohit who definitely IS the future of Ind cricket despite the utterly insignificant ODI failure which is anyway hardly a credible yardstick to go by? OTOH nice to see Pujara back,Rahane's is hardly a surprise as he was already there in Oz squad. Finally Y on earth Dhoni still Test capt, after failing bigtime both as batsman&skipper in 7 consec tests? Gambhir deserves it both due to passion&seriousness to the job

  • desi-blue on August 11, 2012, 3:59 GMT

I wish i could get an insight into the mindset of VVS...i mean i don't think he has officially retired from Odi's yet let alone Test cricket...he actually put himself in the IPL auction thinking that he would get selected...this after he had two miserable overseas tours...i am no cricket expert nor am i a rocket scientist...but i am sure it takes neither of the two to figure out that VVS is past his sell by date and it is time for him to graciously sail into the sunset so that the youngsters are given enough time to gain some experience and confidence so that they are prepared....especially for when the team tours abroad....

No regrets for Rohit Sharma. Talent without performance on the field.... this will the inevitable outcome one day or other. But, it is harsh and cruel for Irfan Pathan, to ignore him for the tests, as he has performed well only recently, and there is no reason for ignoring him. Umesh Yadav and Ishant sharma..... Umesh was not satisfactory in the recent tour. Any how, let us see.....

  • Kiran_Paila on August 11, 2012, 2:52 GMT

Surprised to see MS Dhoni in Test squad....especially after his poor form in the last 2 years in Test format. I think its time that India should look for an alternate wicket keeper in Test matches and give the Captaincy to Gambir or Sehwag....That will also help MSD to give his best in ODIs and T20s....

  • RowdyRathore on August 11, 2012, 0:22 GMT

As the Tests start first lets start with tests raina will be good in subcontinent but struggling overseas . rahul sharma than piyush chawla & ashok dinda would be better than ishant sharma(not proven fittness). pujara & rahane r good choices Lets come to t20 now. manoj tiwary could be good in odi & tests as he not shown any capability of destroying the opposition . so not meant for t20. rohit could be good for his hitting ability but in very very poor form. yuvraj singh i wish him luck but he desperately needed practice & we do not know how he fares after i year but i still wish him luck. harbhajan is in very poor form but he can contain the opposition & thats also not bad in t20s also he can bat a bit my real worries r ashok dinda & zaheer both leak runs in sl odis although zaheer is a class player but he is only good with old ball. piyush chawla good for getting hit sixes as he gives in ipl but can bat a bit

  • on August 11, 2012, 0:20 GMT

Critics falsely think that performing well outside asia is the only yardstick to measure asian teams' performance instead defeating asian team in their den gives same no of points for test ranking and win on even home soil give quite a few points compared to a draw................ Fully agree with Raina's selection on subcontinent conditions bcz he plays for win not for not draw. The one dimensional slow batting of overrated Dravid has made India draw quite a few games that Ind could easily win like he did in last test in WI...........................A win would have given Ind lot more points to improve its test ranking..........Further Ind need to replace Dhoni as test captain mainly bcz he doesn't show interest in test cricket and also for his defensive decision making when Ind can win. Ind need a captain like Ponting maybe Gambhir is better option. Bcz on few occasions when bowlers do well Ind need aggressive captains to make those efforts count towards victories

  • on August 11, 2012, 0:04 GMT

Great team selection asu can expect from Shirirkant...apart from Piush Chawala who bowls at least 1 ranked long half every over.......home next selection comettee contains Shirikant too...................................Hope India does not pick Laxman for final 11 in all tests and give youngsters chance in his place bcz he is now totally unfit for compettative cricket

I'm a Pak fan and I highly suggest to Indian fans that Yusuf Pathan is not the right choice in the Indian squad. He is neither threatening with the ball and loses his wicket very early regularly. Irfan Pathan is a MUCH BETTER choice. Yusuf Pathan does not match against the likes of Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle in T20's.

i feel irfan should be their in test squard also....because i feel very sorry to say that india cant take 20 wickets with just their 4 bowlers ...they might do that in sub-continents but not oversee's....i strongly feel that no matter what the condision irfan should come at no. 7 in test with other whatever best 4 bowlers we have depends on the condision.....they say india is the best batting team in the world... so if they really are they can do it with 6 specialist batsman with irfan in mandatory no. 7 untill they unearth other good allrounder or a great bowling unit....

Rohit Sharma appears to be Dhoni's best friend. Come what may, he has to play..... Harbhajan Singh????? that is a shocker!!!! Is selection based only on superstition? Piyush chawla is another bad choice...He is only selected for world cups . He is nowhere to be seen in between. Yuvraj Singh is also a surprise.... but Indian cricket is known for this . Some players are a certainty irrespective of form or performance.

I think it is clear that India will lose T 20 world cup.

He always give you a break in the starting...better to boost him up....u r not selecting him in the Test Cricket... such a shame...

  • Bruisers on August 10, 2012, 19:15 GMT

The inclusion of Tiwary in the T20 team is quite baffling. I mean, what more should poor Ambati Rayudu do to get his place in the team? I always expected Rayudu to be an automatic pick for T20s... I don't understand the exclusion of Pragyan Ojha either. He is easily India's second best spinner in T20s. If not Ojha, they could have atleast picked Murali Kartik or some young left armer like Abdulla, Appanna or Bhatt. No left arm spinner = no success in the bowling department. (I don't think Yuvraj will bowl)

  • SCC08 on August 10, 2012, 19:15 GMT

  • Nampally on August 10, 2012, 18:39 GMT

I feel that the bowlers selected are poor both in the Test squad & in T-20. Kulkarni of Mumbai is a fine left hand seamer who will be a fine bowler if given a chance. I saw him bowl in his only appearance for Mumbai & he was brilliant. He should have been in the T-20. Balaji & Chawla should not even be considered for T-20. Both are very expensive bowlers. The same is the case in the Test squad. Neither Chawla nor Ishant Sharma deserve a chance. Ishant has unproven record after his surgery. This is a similar situation to Sehwag & Tendulkar being sent to England Tour after a long lay off & they failed miserably. Get the guys in form such as Irfan Pathan, who did well both with bat & ball on the SL Tour. If India wants a leg spinner then put him in XI not on bench(as Rahul does consistently) or don't select one in the squad. Why do we need Chawla to warm the bench? Indian bowling is v. weak because of irrational selection of the squad & the XI.There are good bowlers available but dropped.

  • on August 10, 2012, 17:30 GMT

This selection is quite weird. Why there is no grooming for in form players like Manoj Tiwary and Ashok Dinda? Also its high time to go with Rohit Sharma in the T20 squad. Does anyone know who is his GODFATHER? Will Manoj Tiwary will be given same amount of matches when he will go through a bad patch? Another point to cover is that why the selectors are not going for some new spinners as Iqbal Abdullah rather going for Chawla? And for T20 I ofcourse think Manwinder Bisla would have been a good choice not only as a batsman but a stand in wicket keeper which the selectors haven't thought of.

  • mathewjohn2176 on August 10, 2012, 17:12 GMT

@HALEOS, why are you after TN players? Vijay and mukund got selected when sehwag got injured and once sehwag returned, they both were dropped and replaced by rahane.Balaji is a good bowler who performed better during IPL this season and so much better than what rohit done during SL series.Ashwin is better and very economical.so now tell me where does CSK players in this selection? Chawla ,bhajji is not a CSK players.Only one thing in Indian cricket selection is permanent, that pick ROHIT at any cost due to Mumbai lobby which is happening from the time of vengsargar as selector.Open your eyes and see wide open instead of wearing tinted glasses. Its Indian team where players comes from all parts of India.publish this.

There is no point in blaming Srikkanth and the selectors alone. I think one can see Dhoni's influence a lot in the selection. The selection of Piyush Chawla and Ishant Sharma, the continued exclusion of Praveen Kumar are all due to Dhoni's influence IMO

  • jasonpete on August 10, 2012, 17:02 GMT

Posted by Haleos on (August 10 2012, 11:53 AM GMT), Where is CSK players comes in the picture? Ashwin is the only player from TN in test squad, then raina gets selected due to the good run in the ODIs during SL series ,anyway he is going to carry drinks during NZ series. Then why does bias talks here? Don't you think Mumbai bloc always get preferred no matter what? Look at rohit sharma,he is still playing since vengsargar as selector and no runs in international matches, but always in playing eleven.Vijay and mukund got selected when sehwag was not in the team due to injury, even rahane replaced those guys.Baaji did a good job during IPL season under KKR franchise. So where does regionalism arises? Chawla don't play for csk.I am not an Indian but I follow Indian cricket and seeing all your post target only one ie csk and TN players.Go and figure out,How rohit getting selected due to Mumbai lobby? Indian team comprises of many states players and keep your biased regionalism with you.

Pujara forced his way into Test team. He surely deserves and will serve the team for long. Rahane also deserves a place in Tests. No kudos to selection committee for these two. These two forced their way into the team. I still feel Rohit and Rahane are more suited to Tests than Virat Kohli and I guess jury will is still out on this and it's too early. Somebody needs to talk to Rohit to sort out issues going on his mind. Looks like it is more the mind thing than skills. He will be a great Test batsman if he is helped out by BCCI. Maybe Sunny Gavaskar or Azhar or Kapil need to speak to him at length. And we could have a match winner at our hands. We need to nurture talent like him. May be it is time to recall Kaif into the Test mix as this might be Laxman's last stint. And you just can't have youngsters to shoulder the Test batting line up. Kaif always stood up to his little chances that he got in Tests.May be Jaffer gets a recall as well to open the innings and let Sehwag bat lower down

  • dhekar01 on August 10, 2012, 16:39 GMT

I hope MS Dhoni makes a "Gutsy" call and leave out VVS Laxman. He has been a hero alright but enough of "worshiping" and I say it should apply to Sach as well. Hope VVS (and SRT) realizes that he is a road block for a youngster who has been toiling for that day to come.

Overall, I agree with a comment about "Selection Committee" continues to make mistakes and picks the players who are not "MATCH READY" - whether they are among the paying 11 or on bench. Bowling needs to be sharp. Besides, seasoned but aging Zack & budding stars such as Ashwin and Umesh, I don't think others have the sharpness to penetrate the opposition lineup.

  • praveen4honestremark on August 10, 2012, 16:38 GMT

If BCCI want to get respect from Indian fan then it should ask the selectors to sit down and select the team wisely again and with out any politics. 1) Chawla to be removed from both teams.Don't know how Chawla entered into team. If they feel they can answer this appropriately and satisfy many of Indian cricket fans then you can retain Chawla. 2) Rahane exclusion from T20 and Rohit inclusion into T20...how is it justified??? Answer this BCCI. and many more questions asked in this forum. If you cannot answer and wont change squad then you will loose respect BCCI and you will have to pay for the illogical decisions you have been taking. Huge price you have to pay in future. I guarantee it.

  • on August 10, 2012, 16:34 GMT

  • Rumy1 on August 10, 2012, 16:27 GMT

Chalo this was last selection to be made by Srikkanth. Some blatant Test selections like Ashwin, Raina continue to baffle. What have Ashwin or Raina done to deserve a place in Tests except continuous below average performances in whatever chances they have got but kya kariye - thanks to Srikkanth and Dhoni. Ashwin at best could be good for four overs. But Tests?? siimply ridiculous.Ashwin is already a sorted out bowler by top international Test batsmen and stands exposed for his limited skills. Bhajji deserves a comeback in both Tests and ODI. For SURE. You can't keep him out any more. Chawla deserves a place...he definitely could be a matchwinner on domestic tracks. Chawla and Ojha are any day better selections for Tests for their skills, variety, talent, and potential. We thought Raina would be kept for just T20 and ODIs but he surely has great admirers in selection committee. Even a Rohit Sharma is better than Raina even if Test matches with Kiwis are to played on domestic pitches.

But for what TEST cricket is, true pinnacle of all forms of cricket, there is no substitute for experience… New generation like Kohli and Pujara, who are showing good promise, level head and patience, they will learn a lot from this most un-sung legend of Indian cricket.

The only strange selection in the Test team is Piyush Chawla. Otherwise the team is more or less OK. Laxman will possibly play till the end of the season if he shows form. 3-4-5-6 should be Laxman, Tendulkar, Pujara and Kohli. Someone here compared Chawla to Agarkar. Actually Agarkar was quite good in the ODI's. He had 280+ wickets and except for that horror streak in Australia, was a decent bat down the order. The problem with him was that he was understated and hence everyone loved to put him down. He was one of those players who never got credit for their performances. He was a pretty nippy wicket taking bowler.

  • VickGower on August 10, 2012, 15:36 GMT

So Laxman is back? What for, man? I believe you are more than financially secure. Let's give youngsters a chance. Have we not seen what sitting on the bench endlessly can do to a youngster's confidence? This is the time to persist with Rohit or try out one of Rahane, Tiwary, etc. Would be foolish to go to SA or some other minefield with Laxman, or to expose one of those youngsters then.

badrinath is the most unlucky player in domestic cricket....his average of 60 + over 100 matches is often overlooked......3 tests were too little for him to prove anything...wish he was in the squad instead of raina....bad move to have raina in the test squad....i appreciate him as a limited overs cricketer, but he is hardly a test player, poor technique, no answer to the short ball...bad move i should say

WOW!!!!! , Ive been a huge crtitic of Srikkanth and his fellow selectors especially for ignoring Irfan but WOW !! ,I coudnt be happier with the T-20 side ,Both Yuvraj and Bhajji in is the icing on the cake ,Hopefully Rohit is not in the playing 11 .Great job selectors! Srikkanth does go out with a bang .Regarding the test side i think they did a good job there too.

Wish to a launch a "Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Piyush & Bhajji", since the selectors are being so cruel to expose them again and again in a sadistic way. Leave those two alone to play county cricket, regain some form and make some dough!

why rahane dropped from WT20?what is the reason to pick rohit, as of now he is out form. rahane is better in T20 compared to rohit and also he is a reserved opener. Now where is the reserved opener for WT20? in recent SL tour rahane had 2 chances and scored 30+ on the board, but rohit played all the ininings and scored just 13 runs with best of 5. chawla is not did well in past one year then what is the reason to pick him.

  • on August 10, 2012, 15:12 GMT

WOW! "We have picked the best possible team", What else a selector will say? Too many non-starters for the T-20.Why do we pick guys, we know will not make the playing XI. And miss the chance to test out many... many who are good prospects for the future...both in batting and bowling. Is Bhaji being sent as a bowling coach to the spinners...if so,he will be in the list of officials...and not in the list of players! And, Piyush? Why? With Zaheer's decline, and impending retirement, a very similar player Pathan need to be tried out in Tests, since he got back his skills in swinging the ball both ways, with a vengeance. On Indian pitches, it is the movement which gets wickets and not speed per se. Especially the Indians' speed! Pathan is the ideal replacement for Zak. Vision... and plans for future is... what is missing

  • playitstraight on August 10, 2012, 15:03 GMT

Trust me, this IS the last test series mr. vvs "very very special" laxman is going to play for India. Whether he finishes on a high or not, he knows it's time to go. He knows he should have retired before Dravid. He knows that NZ are the easiest team currently to score runs against. He knows that India are playing at home. And now he knows, that he knows. Goodbye VVS. As for Raina, it's make-or-break. Same applies to Piyush Chawla. Finally, time for "unlucky" Ishant to step it up.

  • Naresh28 on August 10, 2012, 15:03 GMT

I hope the NZ series will be LAXMAN and SACHINS farewell. Both have served India well. Pujara Should be selected in the Playing 11 - he is Dravids replacement. Irfan should be in the test squad. His feilding, bowling and batting is a plus especially when India tours abroad.

  • on August 10, 2012, 14:58 GMT

So Nohit Sharma is in t 20 side. Hope Dhoni will use him in the nets ( he is best player in the nets: Gambhir said so) but dont pick him up in playing eleven ( he is worst when he is in playing eleven: SL seriese is the proof). Rest instead of Chawla, they should have picked Jadeja/ Yusuf who can field well, vbowl well and on their day bat well too.

  • ovzdatta151 on August 10, 2012, 14:56 GMT

After seeing the squad of both Test and T20, I have a roller coaster feeling. Feeling happy to see UV back in the T20 squad but also feeling dejected with the Test Squad. There is no difference in the Test team. It is petty much the same faces who had a hell of an experience in England and Australia. There is no point of selecting Raina in the test team. There is no doubt about Laxman class but his agility has gone down with his age and there is nothing wrong in it. I don;t know where Ajinkya Rahane fits in the team because Gambhir and Sehwag gonna open the innings. In my opinion let Sehwag play only one test match and take rest before the T20 WC. Same in the case of Z Khan too. In my opinion in First Test Match line up of Indian team should be like: First Test 1) V Sehwag 2) G Gambhir 3) C Pujara 4) S Tendulkar 5) V Kohli 6) M S Dhoni 7) R Ashwin 8) I Sharma 9) P Ojha 10) P Chawla 11) Z Khan

Rahane- failed in 2 matches- not selected. will get another chance or not- no one knows. Rohit sharma- FAILING FOR approx. 3 yrs - scores only against zimbabwe or some other bad team - Selected everytime. THIS IS A JOKE OR WAT????

  • Fan_India on August 10, 2012, 14:51 GMT

First of all, all 11 players selected are talented and thats y they are there, so there is no reason to make a hype abt rohit's talent. If he is extra talented then he wouldn't be in the situation he is now. There is a combination of 3 things that make a player successful - Talent ofcourse, hardwork and descipline. If the balance is lost the players will lose. This is what is happening in Rohit's case. He is lazy , indesciplined and not hardworking. Just talent alone cannot win you matches. This is the common observation of great players who commented on him. Good example is Sachin, Dravid, Kohli. They are talented, hardworking and desciplined. If Rohit does not change his attitude then sorry he should not be in team. Again form is an excuse, losing form is mere consequense of distrubance of balance of T, D and H. I guess he is having strong backup in BCCI who is excusing him on the name of so called talent.

  • hyped on August 10, 2012, 14:50 GMT

gud selection overall except that of piyush chawla and why have not kept a reserve keeper in the squad?? for me the playing 11 must be sehwag, gambhir, virat, yuvraj, raina, rohit, dhoni, irfan, bhajji, zaheer, balaji

  • fzhaque on August 10, 2012, 14:45 GMT

I believe this is the best T-20 squad which we could have got, though I dont know how well Yuvraj is prepared. Probably they are rushing him without any match practice. We need not worry about the reserve players, as according to me the playing XI will be this - 1.Sehwag 2.Gambhir 3.Virat 4.Yuvraj 5.Manoj 6.Raina 7.Dhoni 8.Irfan 9.Ashwin 10. Zaheer 11.Dinda/Bhajji/Balaji

was thinking zak should've sat out also and let the next-gen seamers get a look in; again, this is a weak nz team and we're playing them at home; so when, if not now, are we going to see how we're going to replace the aging seniors??? anyway, just read monga's article and learnt that kris srikkanth is now the outgoing chairman of selectors, and that this is his last selection decision. so that explains everything.

  • on August 10, 2012, 14:39 GMT

I am so very happy for the return of Yuvraj singh !!!!!! and rest of squad is fine too ,you can say this player for that but that will never stop but piyush chawla is he a player only or World cups .... . The test team is a bit of a disappointment ,if you lose 4-0 in two consecutive test series abroad something is wrong ,the changes that have come in are for a retired player (Dravid ) and Rohit Sharma who dint play a game in those matches and has come in a Suresh Raina ,we saw how good is his technique is in England . This team will win in India but lets see what can it do overseas . Best of luck to both the teams....

Pujara and Rahane both were expected but surprised to see Raina, Chawla and Ishant. Think Raina's selection was purely based on ODIs; he didn't also feature in West Indies A tour. But I suppose if Raina is to be a part of India Test set up, home series is the right place to start things over again

But selectors are playing musical chairs..... IDIOTS!!!!!

  • gpindian on August 10, 2012, 14:22 GMT

I think the team selection is excellent. In test cricket, we need batsmen who can play long patient innings and bowlers who can bowl a lot of wicket taking balls. In T20, we need batsmen who can smash the ball and have done well in the IPL, and bowlers like Harbhajan and Balaji who can contain the run flow. Irfan is not a perfect T20 bowler, but is more than useful with the bat in the shorter format. I only with Yuvraj was in the Test squad instead of Raina. I wouldnt say that Yuvraj deserves the place more (although he cannot be worse than Raina in Tests) - its just that it will get him ready for the T20 WC.

  • cricketlover4 on August 10, 2012, 14:20 GMT

  • aravabalaji on August 10, 2012, 14:20 GMT

I like Yuvraj top quality player especially in limited overs but what's really shocking about the Indian team is that based on that squad, you're actually looking upto 9 players in that 11 who can bat. India probably along with South Africa and West Indies are more likely to win this tournament.

  • jay_vkjay on August 10, 2012, 14:01 GMT

One man who is really surprised to see the teams for both tests and T20 WC will be Piyush Chawla. He might have felt like "What have I done'WRONG' to be part of the team?" Also big surprise in the test team is that Irfan Pathan not picked, despite his brilliant all round show in Sri Lanka. Yuvraj's comeback is a daring decision. I don't think lack of match practice will be an issue for him. The two T20 matches vs New Zealand+the warm up matches in WC will be enough for him. He is such a fighter and great talent. Omission of Rahane from T20 side just shocked me...Some players are picked on basis of their IPL performance, but Rahane's 103 and 98 in IPL went unnoticed. Inclusion of Balaji welcome decision. Also Harbhajan's presence will boost teams confidence. Inclusion of Pujara and Rahane and omission of Rohit in test team expected. But Rahane won't get a chance unless Sehwag/Gambhir is unfit. Anyway, Good luck India and Good bye K.Srikanth.Go India Go....

why not pathan in test side & why not munaf

  • spinkingKK on August 10, 2012, 13:53 GMT

World T20 team is ok. More aptly, one can't really go wrong with the selection of a hit & miss squad from a popluation of 1 billion. However, in test squad, there are mistakes. I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND why IRFAN is not considered an automatic choice in all forms of cricket for India? Happy to see Pujara back in the side. I can understand that the senior cricketers in the team thinks that Rohit is a very good player. However, performance does matter and Pujara should have been playing in the 11 a long time ago. I am a Laxman fan. However, with all the failures he has shown and the ageing body suggests that it was the most appropriate time to say good bye to hime and put Pujara to bat at 3. If selectors think that Harbhajan still got it in him, he would have been a great choice as a third spinner in tests. So, if he had to warm the bench, it could trigger him to perform well when he gets a chance. Third seamer position should have gone to Sreesanth. All said, overall its an ok selection.

  • MunafAhmed811 on August 10, 2012, 13:51 GMT

My playing 11 T20 Worldcup, Shewag, gambir, rehane, Yuvraj, kholi, raina, dhoni, irfan pathan, zaheerkhan, ashwin, yousuf pathan.

I hope this selection will win....

  • ProdigyA on August 10, 2012, 13:48 GMT

I really hope this is the last test for VVS. More than the BCCI and selection commitee, he should feel more responsible towards the team like Dravid and signoff with respect before getting dumped. Its a home series and he is bound to get runs but still he should go and give youngsters much deserved opportunities. Regarding MS, not sure he even deserves a place in the TEST team forget about captaincy. He should also be sacked from tests.

  • on August 10, 2012, 13:48 GMT

Raina in the test squad it is a big joke. He never going to play well against short stuff even he can state that he is practicing against shot pitch delivery after completion of another two three years test cap. Pujara is the only one meaningful selection but I don't think MSD will prefer him than Raina. Another surprise selection is Ishant sharma, Dinda having better match practice than him and he is bowling better. Irfan exclusion also bit surprise

  • baghels.a on August 10, 2012, 13:46 GMT

I like the rest of the guys posted have same questions, why Rohit Sharma dropped from test matches, why is Piyush Chawla in both the squads, why is Manoj Tiwary in 20-20 squad when his game is not suited for slam bang cricket, what Harbhajan has done to merit selection, not a fan of Rahul Sharma but why was he dropped,.Overall selectors have not shown enough foresight by not selecting young and desevring players,it is confusing and perplexing.

  • on August 10, 2012, 13:44 GMT

Why the hell is Rohit selected ahead of Rahane? Rahane was a leading run scorer in the IPL and following this ridiculous selection I think time as come for selectors to resign from their posts and they must be replaced by selectors who prefer to play youngsters in the coming future.Umesh is also left out :(.

@sshailesh really Raina in best 11 of test, wasnt he found to have problems with bouncing balls and swinging balls, though he scored 50's in one days but didnt he have lots of dropped catches nad edges in those inning. didnt he flop in england in test matches and australia in one days and every cricketer worth his salt knows raina cant handle pace or swing. anyway Yuvi in international, selectors are really jokers as has been said. didnt they learn from mistake of bringing in zaheer khan straight after injury without match practice to international cricket in england where he got injured and looked tired. they dont learn do they anyway best of luck to our Indian cricketers though selection seem to be more on likes and dislikes than better cricket being played hence raydu, and left arm spinners from KKR and other batsmen missing out and harbhajan and rohit sharma and yuvraj in.

  • gannyboy on August 10, 2012, 13:37 GMT

should include sreesanth!!!!!!! india's lucky charm!!!! he and chawla both are together very strong power

  • Nampally on August 10, 2012, 13:27 GMT

The Test squad is reinforced with the inclusion of C.Pujara. Dhoni must ensure his inclusion in the XI. I feel that Laxman should have retired as he is grossly short of match practice & is of questionable physical fitness. He will be depriving Raina of a spot in the XI. If VVS bat at #3 spot, Kohli & Pujara may bat lower down. The other surprise is the inclusion of Chawla after being shelved for 2 years. But it will hardly matter as Dhoni will have Ashwin & possibly Ojha as the 2 spinners. So Ojha will merely replace Rahul Sharma on the bench!.The omission of Irfan Pathan in favour of unproven fitness of Ishant Sharma is another surprise. It looks like India will go with 6 batsmen + WK + 4 bowlers. So it is a choice of either 3 seamers + Ashwin or 2 seamers + 2 spinners. It would have been better to have Irfan Pathan to substitute one batsman with an all rounder seamer to permit 2 spinners in XI. The Selectors seem to repeat the same mistakes. How will the Indian weak bowling improve?

Balaji is a good selection... munaf would have been a better option than dinda... Lets hope yuvraj sets the stage on fire as in south africa... welcome back yuvi !!

  • SASANK360 on August 10, 2012, 13:09 GMT

Absolutely bad selection by the committee. Simply a joke, this selection. First up why Sachin Tendulkar? He should spend time with kids. He should skip the NZ series and play in the Champions League T20 just like he skipped WI tour 2011 and played in IPL. This is really shameless stuff from once a great man. He needs rest and time to spend with family when he is actually supposed to play for country, then suddenly turns up from no where to play IPL. Selectors should have rested him and picked up Rohit. Also Chawla in test squad is ridiculous. Irfan Pathan deserves a better chance in test cricket. Hope someone gets injured and Pathan gets the chance. Otherwise this series will give Pathan some break to improve his bowling. Other than this selection has been trivial and straight forward. This selection committee should be removed and new committee should be formed. They don't deserve to be there. Even cricket lovers like us could have come up with a better squad. Anyway good luck India.

  • fastrack10 on August 10, 2012, 13:05 GMT

good to see Tiwary in the team, the way he had to wait for 8months to get a game after scoring a 100, i thought the next step is omition from the team as he has perfprmed again, thank GOD..i think the selectors are getting one thing wrong..they are right about the fact that rohit sharma is one of the most talented guys we have.but the fact of the matter is somehow he is not in form,& that has been the case for quite some time now.it shows that he needs some time fro himself,no point dragging him with the team when his confidence is at its lowest..selectors should hve spoken with him & made it clear that they still believe in his talent but at this point of time he needs to take a break from cricket for few days, then come back & practice in NCA, then again make a come back to the national team with all guns blazing..the selectors are afaird that if they omit him from the team he might loose it all & there by India loose a good player. thats not the right approach i guess.

For All SRIKANTH critics - Just one line. India won the ICC ODI World cup 2011 after 28 long years. Srikanth was the head of the selection comittie of that squad. It was my childhood dream to see India lifting the ODI World Cup. Four people who were responsible for fulfiling my/billion Indians dream ...1 . Dhoni. 2. Yuvraj. 3. Sachin 4. SRIKANTH

Piyush Chawla as a good luck charm for World cup is still ok but in tests is hillarious! :-)

Not again, Rohit must be dropped from all format of cricket. What makes his selection justified even in T20? Rahane must be there even in T20, his recent performance even in T20 is much better than Rohit.

If Rohit is selected in world cup T20, India can never will World Cup T20

Ishant Sharma without being tested walks into test team !!! Yousuf Pathan, a known game changer, is not in T20 Team while spent forces like Bhajji and flops like Rohit are in!!

Super selection done...hats off...nice team combination..i hope India win the T20 world cup..L.Balaji was a surprise selection..

  • QingdaoXI on August 10, 2012, 12:50 GMT

From June 1996, its first time the great wall Rahul Dravid is missing from the test team, actually he sacrificed his position to Laxman, as laxman was not eager to retire and Dravid wanted to eject new blood one by one in the team, but on any given day dravid would have been better than Laxman, Poor Dravid never get his limelight and also doesnt took a time to play a last match in front of us home crowd, but laxman is still there without fitness. Where was Laxman after Australian series, never saw playing cricket anywhere, i think he would have gone back to valleys and would have started farming. Ok but what is Suresh Raina doing in the test squad we know he will play good on Indian pitches and next year vs SAfrica he will flop. Rohit would have better in Test and not for t-20s. Instead of Rohit, Yusuf would have been great. But i think this t-20 squad is good and we will win this cup as jadeja is not there t-20 2007 and wc 2011 no jadeja India win and Chawala in both and India won.

  • akashchandran on August 10, 2012, 12:48 GMT

Somebody in the selection committee is the uncle of Suresh Raina. He was not selected for the WI tour where some of the Test probables were tested in unfavourable conditions. Now he is back in the team on the basis of ODI performances and Rohit Sharma is dropped from the squad without giving him a chance. This team is selected on ODI form only.

  • on August 10, 2012, 12:43 GMT

They should have given Irfan a chance in the Test 11. He could have been the balancing act as the additional seamer and allrounder at 7. Chawla is a traveller and nothing else, selectors have given a team where only 2 positions could be changed (tendulkar and laxman) and they have 5 youngsters for it. Time for Dhoni and Fletcher to use the knife and give the legends some rest.

  • murthydn16 on August 10, 2012, 12:40 GMT

Why Piyush chawla and bhajji. What have they proved to be in the team and why rohit sharma is in the team. He is just mumbai Indians IPL player. He is clueless when playing for India and passionate when playing for mumbai Indians in IPL.

  • jmoses on August 10, 2012, 12:38 GMT

As usual selectors once again have thrown some surprises. The basis on which Chawla is selected in test squad can only be explained by them. I would go with Amit Mishra who has better control and good variations. The problem with Chawla is he is wayward and buckles under pressure. The batsmen selection is as expected except the inclusion of Raina. Its looks like selectors have faith in him and wanted to give him another chance to prove his worth in tests. I feel Pathan should have been tried in tests as he seems to be getting his swing back.

  • CricketMaan on August 10, 2012, 12:36 GMT

We are a nation obsessed with BIG names. While its nice to see Yuvi back in action, its premature to decide that he is fit and in form for a WT20. It also shows that BCCI doesnt want to show any importance to this tournament as they still believe IPL and CLT20 is much bigger, larger and popular. What a pity? I recollect when the likes of Graham Onions, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus were injured, were asked prove match fitness and form in domestic cricket before considered for national team. Rather than picking Yuvi and Ishant for international cricket, why not send them to NZLD along with India A ask them to prove fitness and form before inducting them for the Eng series..but then as i said we like BIG celebreties rather than best XI..Chawla is nothing but a lucky mascot. He is not there to play in the XI but only for superstious reasons. I feel sorry for Praveen and Dinda. Ishant needs time and match fitness not Tests against NZ.

Selecting Raina in Test and Rohit in T20 is a blunder decision. Raina is an ODI specialist and he has no future in tests. He might succeed in Indian conditions but he cannot do it in the long run. Rohit is a test specialist and giving him ODI and T20 chances to prove his value is a blunder. This will spoil his temperament and skills in tests thereby spoiling his talent. It is sad that to get a test cap, one has prove his talent in ODI. BCCI should consider all three formats separately and give chances to players according to their skills in each format. I bet Raina can't survive in tests. He will have the same fate like Yuvraj had in tests. My test team: Rahane, Gambhir, Laxman, Kohli, Pujara, Rohit, Dhoni, Zaheer, Ojha, Dinda, Chawla.

Raina back in test cricket? Srikkanth should be awarded as the most rubbish selector ever. And, what is the problem? We already have two youngsters in the team in the names of Kohli and Pujara/Rahane who ever gets chance.. So, you need team with full of youngsters? Why not prefer a transition team rather than a new look team.. In long term, some small sessions for the guys with Laxman or Sachin will benefit for sure.. They are not going to be for much time but the young players can always learn from the stalwarts.. I don't prefer replace seniors in heap theory.. Let them go one by every two or 3 series..

Indians need to look forward and hence the idea should have been to go for new talent. Unfortunately, we in India are obsessed with reputation. • on August 10, 2012, 11:25 GMT

There may be some wrong selection. But 1 non-selection is perfect. Selector have done right by not selecting Jadeja. Right now he is a total waste player, whose presence mostly support opponents. May be some player in this list don't deserve chance, however Jadeja certainly don't deserve to be selected in national side. What he has done with his previous selection that some are saying he should have been there. With his current ability/form he never should be selected. He should first improve his game before getting selected. Right now he is neither a bowler nor a batsmen. He is just a good fielder. Though not of standard as Jonty Rhodes was, that he should be selected only on his fielding merit. Indeed selector should go form some new selection instead of just selecting old tried player who has never proved their selection. Like Rayadu etc.

  • Ranjan2012 on August 10, 2012, 11:25 GMT

Yuvraj Singh is not match fit ,his selection is more an emotional step rather than one based on ground realities.A truly match fit, physically fit youngster has truly missed the bus here. Our selectors , based their selection more on past laurels rathan than on present form.Take the case of VVS ,same ol' story. VVS is now a cricketer who regularly suffer from " back problem", his statistics in the last 10 away test matches had been pathetic to say the least. Matches in India would have been a perfect setting to blood yoingsters.Once youngsters are included in the team, there are chances of failure, but here, BBCI could have given a message to Indian crticket fans that since they have introduced youngsters , the match results may not be as per expectation. One realy feel for Dinda, Tiwary Rahne & co .God knows when they see the light in the tunnel.

Great to see Yuvi making a comeback to Team India. Also happy to know that Piyush makes into the team ahead of Rahul Sharma. Would have liked to see Ambati Rayudu's name feature in that list. As far as Test squad is concerned, I think selectors are too kind on Raina. He is suitable for Tests in Sub-Continent only. Again Rahane's name should not be missing from T20 squad. He's got very limited opportunities and that too spread in different series. Another opportunity for Rohit though.

  • on August 10, 2012, 11:23 GMT

It's a brave selection. A huge gamble considering Yuvraj has no match practice. If he doesn't perform in the WC, bring on the criticism. On the other hand if he does well, kudos to the selectors :)

  • gummadv on August 10, 2012, 11:22 GMT

Bajji recall is calculated gamble for world cup. One should remember he is not getting wickets but bowling economy is good. And noting is working(IPL, County cricket etc) for Bajji Indian recall might do the magic. We need him at his peak against England and Australia test series.

piush can be handy against England and Australia. May bamboozle them to their doom. All in all some good strategy from Vishwanatnan Anand's state mate.

Hope we regain World cup and win against Australia and England convincingly.

  • on August 10, 2012, 11:18 GMT

Why have they not included Irfan in the test squad? He is one player who has again and again proved his worthiness as a player. Its time Kris realises filling the team with either Chennai Super kings or Tamil nadu players is not the solution to a good Indian Cricket team

  • Mr.Shani on August 10, 2012, 11:17 GMT

Im a Pakistani but glad to c Yuvraj back in the squad. He is truly a match winner with his own. But i think this squad lack in the department of fast bowling. Any1 from Parveen, Munaf or Ashish should have been there to provide strength to fast bowling. Anyways selectors think better than me so a good team selection. And best of luck from me but during the tournament definitely my prayers will be with my own team Pakistan but i pray that all the teams perform well in the tournament so that we can watch a competitive cricket.

  • on August 10, 2012, 11:10 GMT

Rohit Sharma should have been in test list to get his form back. Pathan is missing in T20, Chawla not deserving. I wish Bhajji , Virat ,Sehwag & Team India success .

  • yescric on August 10, 2012, 11:08 GMT

it is funny when i think of the credibility of the selection of piyush over pragyan in t20 squad (please don't tell me piyush got in because he is leggie, which is different from the two other spinners who happen to be offie) and why in the world raina is ahead of badrinath/rahane in test selection....

  • on August 10, 2012, 11:07 GMT

Piyush Chawla back again. Crazy decision. When Ashwin is there in the team, no point in including Harbajan. Irfan could have given a chance in tests as he can back the batting lineup and also nowedays he is able to swing the ball.

  • sanmaha on August 10, 2012, 11:06 GMT

Worst selection by Indian selectors are they mad ? why they include Piyush Chawla in 15 men squad what happen to praveen kumar umaesh yadav, yusuf pathan ?

Srikanth and and regional bias in the cricket system is killing Indian cricket.. Rohit Sharma in T20 squad.. Ashok Dinda and Shami Ahmed missing in any of the teams despite of doing brilliantly in the first class season and the West Indies A Tour.. Ishant Sharma making the squad... despite repeated failures.. sadd.. !!! Yuvraj Singh shall soon find his place in the Test matches too where he shall fail again as he has dnoe in the past.. he and Suresh Rina will be picked to keep Manoj Tiwary out of the side.. let us wait and watch...

batting is very strong, 1.veeru, 2.gotti, 3.kohli,4 raina,5.yuvi,6.dhoni,7.pathan,8.aswin, 9 bhaji, 10,zaheer,11.balaji.wrong selection is 1.chawla(we can pick ojha,he is good bowler in 2020.)or jadeja he can field well, also can bat and bowl.Instead of Dinda, better option is umesh yadav(he can bowl fast) or munaf patel(he have variations.).3.yousf pathan should be in the squad inplace of rohit or manoj tiwary.Piyush only play world cups and he is the bowler givon most sixes in ipl.

Both Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar are great Cricketers. However, the way they picked and chose matches/series to play left a lot desired. Sachin excused himself from the tour of the West Indies (If he had played, he would have been better prepared for the English tour), but was there for the I.P.L. This is not to detract from their contributions to Indian Cricket.

  • georgebhai on August 10, 2012, 10:57 GMT

I am really surprised that Harbhajan Singh finds a place in the World Cup team. What has he done in the past couple of years? His showing in the IPL too does not support his selection.

Yuvraj again should have been given more time to recover in spite of what he might say. International cricket is no walk in the park.

I think it is time we had a fresh set of selectors with new ideas and a genuine interest in the welfare of India cricket.

  • ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY on August 10, 2012, 10:56 GMT

I would made few changes in T20 Squad to make it Perfect Squad, Tiwary <-> Rayudu Chawla <-> Yusuf Balaji <-> Praveen Kumar What u all Think.....

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:56 GMT

Sad... no Ashok Dinda in the test squad who had a dream this first class season with over 50 wickets.. Ishant Sharma makes a come back from nowhere.. with so many terribly performances over last few test matches

  • VVS_a_class_act on August 10, 2012, 10:55 GMT

As for as Piyush Chawla is concerned, there is a Myth that when ever he is in the WC squad, India Won. It happened in 2007 T20 WC, 2012WC .. (Not sure about 2007 ODI WC ). But which shocks me is how on the earth he find a place in Indian TEST team????? T20 squad is not balanced one......

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:55 GMT

Srikkanth & co lack guts..Instead of looking to the future they recall Bhaji and Balaji and persist with Rohit despite innumerable failures..Also the selectors must talk to VVS and Sachin for a smooth transition..The worst selection committee we have ever had and to top it they are paid to do their job.

  • vinay21 on August 10, 2012, 10:53 GMT

Again Rohit Sharma,Harbhajan,Balaji,Piyush.....?I dont know on wat basis they have selected..?Ignoring Vinay Kumar is big mistake. He is the highest wicket taker bowler for India in IPL.

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:52 GMT

what Suresh Raina doing in the test squad? He will play well in Sub continent conditions but when it comes to SA in 2013 with Morkel, steyn looking to chop his head out that will be fun to watch. Should I ask BCCI have they thought about bouncing or swinging conditions. Pds

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:52 GMT

Laxman should bat at No 3. His inclusion in team was debated as usual. Sorry Laxmans critics.

  • GouthaKarun on August 10, 2012, 10:51 GMT

Srikanth is not a selector,he is the worst JOKER.This t20 team cannot win even zim match.

  • Sarangarajan on August 10, 2012, 10:51 GMT

What is the reason to bring Harbhajan back to the t20 team?. It is absurd as he has been very poor in all the matches/series so far including his present stint with Essex. There is no meaning in having Ashwin and Harbhajan in the same squad. Some funny ways of the selectors. It is nice to have Yuvraj in the team. But can he stand the rigors of a T20 Worldcup? .We are emotional people and we are not bothered by the reality.May be it is too much to expect from him after what he has gone through. Any how best of Luck Yuvi. We know you have a big heart and bigger talent.

It is also good that Srikanth's tenure is coming to end as the chief of selectors. We do not have , any more, to endure his comical explanations and silly mannerisms, at the press brief .

  • ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY on August 10, 2012, 10:50 GMT

Irfan should be Selected in TEST Matches. He might help INDIA in test during their some Batting Collapse which surely came in one of the innings as i think + his swing is back so should given chance. Pathan Brothers in SRI LANKA would be great as both have won together match in T20 in Sri Lanka Earlier.Hoping For Some Outside(Injury) Entry For Yusuf For World Cup.

  • secondopinion on August 10, 2012, 10:50 GMT

Many borderline selections, even if one accepts VVSL's case as a last honour for his one and half decade service to Indian cricket. Ishant Sharma hasn't done anything to redeem himself. We keep changing round the pacers- Munaf Patel, Dinda, Vijyakumar, Varun Aaron... Umesh Yadav has to be persisted with to give more exposure and try-outs, but he too has to learn and mature since 140+ itself will not scare anyone. While I have all the respect for Yuvi's fight, he has not been tested in real-life. Doing rounds the practice ground, playing in the nets against club-level bowlers and short training sessions are not equal to the intensity of 20-20 match against the world's best. Bhajji has some godfather. Or is it North Zone + Mumbai Indian connection

  • vinay21 on August 10, 2012, 10:48 GMT

  • Narbavi on August 10, 2012, 10:47 GMT

@Tino Jolly: you simply cannot be a follower of indian cricket, because if u were,. by now you would have known that balaji did well in the ipl and deserves his place

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:47 GMT

why Rohit still in T20 squad?

  • shantiratnamaj on August 10, 2012, 10:45 GMT

Rohit SHarma for test instead of Raina would have been better for both players - failure for Raina in the test can cause upset for him for the T20 to come and Rohit would have benefitted by playing 2 test matches. Why no Bisla? who is India's supplementary keeper? No chance for Trivedi? Chawla oh no....what's happening to Munaf? WC is in SL not in Australia guys. Ravindra Jadeja is much better than Chawla. bowling, fileding and batting ----

  • Akshaythekaxk on August 10, 2012, 10:45 GMT

I think Chawla has a source in BCCI, last time he got selected just before the world cup, without doing much, and then got dropped and now again this is happening. He has robbed Ojha a world cup win and now WC t20.

  • veerakannadiga on August 10, 2012, 10:45 GMT

Thank God this is Srikanth's last selection. Hope the new selector will have more guts to select a good young team. Why Srikanth has targeted Uthappa & Rayadu is beyond me.Dhoni was limping in the latter stages of the SL series & no reserve WK in the squad. God save this team if something happens to Dhoni's fitness.Uthappa or Rayadu would have been very handy. Rohit again!!!! Harbhajan why? Defies logic. Mumbai bloc is working overtime. Only silver lining is Yuvi's return.Good luck India.

  • praveen4honestremark on August 10, 2012, 10:44 GMT

Totally confusing selection on many respects. Rahane not in T20 squad? Rohit in T20?? Rohit needs more test exposure to improve his game not Rahane. Rahane can play test and T20 well, then why he is dropped?? Rohit should be dropped from T20's and made to play Tests if had to improve for 2015 WC. Piyush Chawla came from no where. How can get test and T20 spot?? Ojha deserves T20 spot too not Piyush. Harbhajan if selected based on experience then can selectors tell us what has he improved in this period after WC., please show us report. Many deserving spinners are outside waiting. Performance should speak first, not just experience. How is Sachin and VVS in tests?? Selectors have no foresight. Test matches should have been used for youngsters so they can improve their batting skills and see Kohli after single hundred in Australia his confidence is gone up and playing ODI's well, so all that test exposure should be for Youngsters and SRT, VVS need to be said good Bye. 2015WC is important

pathan was really tormenting the srilankan batsmen with his swing .. even with white ball ... the red ball will be more handy for swing bowlers.. bcci should have got pathan in place of chawla .. we dont need three spinners ... we also needed a fast bowling allrounder ..pathan will be good asset in test cricket if he gets going ..should have tested his bowling skill in test.. again .. i donno whether the bcci is superstitious in the inclusion of chawla.. first it was sreesanth ..now it was chawla..

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:41 GMT

how the hell does this chawla breaks into squad for worldcupss????? what improvement did harbhajan show to be granted a place in t2o side?? why not give young rahul sharma and ever deserving ashwin the responsibilty of leading indian spin attack?? if india decides to go into a game with three pacers in the eleven, dhoni will not be able to choose ashwin ahead of bhajjii......and it would certainly be a opportunity wasted and will surely contribute to team's loosin cause !!! get these dirty politics out of slection........india will then be trulyy unbeatable with the abundance of talent it hassss......

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:40 GMT

I WISH AND WISH AGAIN TO SEE IRFAN PATHAN BACK IN THE TEST SQUAD. THIS MAY SOUND WRONG BUT HE CAN BE THE IDEAL FIFTH BOWLER AND GIVE GREAT BALANCE TO THE TEAM. HE CAN SWING THE RED BALL PRETTY WELL. INDIAN TEST TEAM ONLY DEPENDS ON ITS BATTERS MOST OF THE TIME. TO HAVE FIVE BATSMEN, THEN DHONI, THEN PATHAN, THEN FOUR BOWLERS SOUNDS VERY GOOD IN THEORY.

  • Haleos on August 10, 2012, 10:32 GMT

@Suraj - You defend VVS like he is the best batsman we have got. The series is in India. Best time to try youngsters. If VVS was not able to use his expeirence in defeats oversees whats the use? And he takes so many catches because he fields in the slips. He drops a lot as well nowadays. He has to be kept there because he cant move around in the field. Have you seen his running while batting? Lazy is a mild word. While batting with tailenders, he takes least strike and comes out as saviour as he is not out in the end. Ishant faced 15 overs out of 21. Bhajji too faced more balls than VVS. These are the last 2 instances when VVS supposedly saved us. He is past his prime. accept it and dont support him because he maybe from your city. Lastly, recent form should count. 8 tests where the ones when he should have used his experience. U cant keep selecting people for one glorious innings more than a decade back.

Very sad for Rohit for being dropped from test squad. Dont understand till how long are we going to take vvs when we have the bunch ready. even after the debacle in eng and aus, selectors still dont have guts to drop the ageing cricketers...I remember sachin saying in one of his interviews that his record would be broken only by virat or rohit...Very strange. Why Piyush and no amit Mishra. Plus why isnt irfan been given a shot at test matches when he has performed so well off late. Also, if you want VVS, let him play against stronger ones

Coming to T20, quite surprised to see Zaheer in the squad when you could have tried with likes of vinay kumar who has consistently performed in T20's. Plus Zaheer can also always be kept fresh for ODI's and Test matches. Also very strange to see rahul sharma being left out. but also good to see harbhajan and balaji making the squad. why no yusuf pathan where he can be very handy on indian as well as sub continent pitches with both bat and ball......

what is piyush chawla doing in the test side??he has done well in ipl but is that the case that the selectors have taken him in the test side??can't understand this...

  • rajithchp on August 10, 2012, 10:24 GMT

why still rohit in t20 squad ,cant understnd why rahane dropped frm tht lineup.i think selectors did nt pick a perfect squad for t20 wc..thy forger rayidu, uthappa, awanna

  • Haleos on August 10, 2012, 10:24 GMT

Never understood BCCI's policy of selecting wrong people for wrong formats. Rohit, Rahane should be groomed as test players. Why do they keep selecting rohit in limited overs and then drop him from the format he is best suited for. VVS should go. Period. The matches are in India. If we dont give chances to youngsters to build confidence in India when will they learn. We will then blame them for failures overseas. Ashwin should play just the test matches. Even jesse ryder is a more athletic fielder than him. pathetic. What has piyush chawla done to serve so many opportunities? he can not evenwork on his fitness, forget his gone.

Why Bajji should be in T20 team? It will be fine, if he is Test squad, since he can come back to competive cricket. But my feeling is, he is not deserved to be in both format (T20 & Test) :-(

  • srinath_f_o_john on August 10, 2012, 10:23 GMT

    For T20 :

Welcome Bhajji & Yuvi. Srilanka pitches are slow pitches. So Seemers are fine. But praveen kumar is my option. But Manoj Tiwary is bad option. In T20 , R. Jadeja is better player than Manoj Tiwary. But My option is Y Pathan (who can change the game). Rohit is the good option. I don't think kohli is good option. Raina is the best onedown player in t-20. Rahane is also good option.

So Playing XI is Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin,Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan

For test : my Playing XI is Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (capt/wk) R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma

Reserve : Cheteshwar Pujara, Pragyan Ojha, Piyush Chawla,

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:23 GMT

come on world, beat this t20 team if u can: 1)gambhir,2)sehwag,3)kohli,4)yuvraj,5)dhoni,6)raina,7)pathan,8)harbhajan,9)ashwin,10)zaheer,11)dinda .......though i would have liked to see uthappa in place of tiwary or even my be yusuf, but this dosent make much of a difference.........in the bowling, the selection of balaji and chawla are big surprises, seems like chawla somehow gets in the team for only world cups,i would have liked to see vinay or praveen in place of balaji just coz they have played for india recently......all in all ,a very good team,we know the batting will do well in sri lanka, but according to me the form of pathan and dinda will be the key,i hope they dont concede too many runs,if they dont ,i see india in the finals....

Gud news FOR Lakshmipathy BAlaji, once again get the chance 2 prove his talent, surely he will deserve his best

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:22 GMT

The best available selection for Test/T20 against NZ. Yuvraj is a fighter and will come victorious whether in Cancer battle or his on field exploits! That is the reason he is back. Good decision. Yuvraj himself know that he has to perform so selectors throw a full toss to Yuvraj to hit himself out to become famous again. The sacking of Rohit Sharma is inevitable, as he is revolving around the tag of talented one and not performing. Why Selectors not included Irfan in Test Team? This is amusing! Irfan is a proven player in Test side and he has to be in the team ahead of Ishant Sharma, who is out for some time now..The only bad selection is this..Otherwise good one.

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:22 GMT

  • Sathish6 on August 10, 2012, 10:22 GMT

  • Mahesh1109 on August 10, 2012, 10:22 GMT

Very sad for Rohit for being dropped from test squad. Dont understand till how long are we going to take vvs when we have the bunch ready. even after the debacle in eng and aus, selectors still dont have guts to drop the ageing cricketers...I remember sachin saying in one of his interviews that his record would be broken only by virat or rohit...Very strange. Why Piyush and no amit Mishra. Plus why isnt irfan been given a shot at test matches when he has performed so well off late

Coming to T20, quite surprised to see Zaheer in the squad when you could have tried with likes of vinay kumar who has consistently performed in T20's. Plus Zaheer can also always be kept fresh for ODI's and Test matches. • jaga.ra on August 10, 2012, 10:18 GMT

why piyush chawla? direct entry for all big tournaments??????????????????

  • chilled_avenger on August 10, 2012, 10:18 GMT

What exactly is Ishant Sharma doing in the Test team? He has taken only 12 wickets in his last 9 tests at a pathetic average of 87 and an appalling strike rate of 151.3. Does he really deserve a Test spot based on these performances? He failed in the Home Series against West Indies and was also equally bad during the tours of South Africa,Sri Lanka,England and Australia in the last 2 years. Why not drop a bowler who cannot bowl well away as well as at home? A newcomer like Umesh Yadav bowled better than him in the Home Series against West Indies and in Australia. So,it's better to go with a bowling attack of Zaheer,Yadav and Dinda than choosing Ishant who is worse than a Club-level bowler nowadays! Remember,he took 5 wickets(at 90+ average) in the 4-test Series against Australia. Please don't select cricketers like Ishant!

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:18 GMT

Welcome back Yuvi. VVS must be the part of team against NZ because the test is being played on Indian pitches against pathetic NZ bowling and the younger ones should be given chance against SA, AUS & ENG in hostile condition. Well done Shrikant!

  • palla.avinash on August 10, 2012, 10:18 GMT

selectors have gone nuts why harbijan Singh in t20 team do he have any reservation. he failed to get wickets in ranji trophy, ipl and now in county cricket.his selection is show of categorizing of selectors.why suresh raina why cant they give chance to tiwary in tests rains wasted his chances first chance to new guys if they fail then go to previous guys.laxman should be sent of in this series for the future of indian team.Amit mishra is much better leg spinner and equally good batsmen than piyush chawla.some good selections like selcting pujara, rahane and bringing balaji in t20s is a good one.yuviraj selection can only be reported after seeing him playing in world cup.

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:17 GMT

what rohit in t20 squad? no way

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:17 GMT

@ aBDUL : May be, its not good to expose Irfan in Test matches. In ODIs he was bowling between 125 to 130 kmph. In tests, it would obviously drop down to who knows even 110 kmh. It would have been of no use. His fitness might have been other issue as he hasn't played Test for so long. We want Fully-Fit Irfan Pathan in T-20 WC. Selectors might have thought of not taking risk with him. And in sub-continent, spinners are needed to pick wickets (Zaheer is exception though)

  • on August 10, 2012, 10:17 GMT

SELECTION OF BOWLERS IS NOT UP TO THE MARK , WHY BHAJJI, BALAJI AND PIYUSH ? TAT TOO IN T20 WC ? BATTING IS STRONGER THAN BOWLING . JADEJA COULD HAV BEEN GIVEN A CHANCE INPLACE OF BHAJJI AT LEAST HE WILL FILL IN FIELDING

  • Ravishenkar on August 10, 2012, 10:17 GMT

What is Piyush Chawla doing in both Tests and T20's squads. I am really clueless about these selectors, what exactly the reason for his selection. Same with Rohit Sharma, he should be sent back to NCA and work on his batting and play a season of Ranji (first class cricket) before getting back into the India colors. He got enough of chances. L.Balaji should have been included in the Test side so that he can get a chance to bowl more, 4 over are very less to judge his come back. Seems like the selection panel need some replacement. This panel doesn't have a forecast to build a team for future(2015 world cup) which is in AUS condition. We need more fast bowlers. WHERE IS PRAVEEN KUMAR & VARUN AROON. We should starting grooming the young fast bowlers else forget about winning anything outside India.

Positives: Pujara, Raina, Rahane in for Tests; Yuvi, Pathan in for T20s. Vinay Kumar out ( even for injury - hopefully he will be quickly forgotten) Negatives: VVS given another lease; this was the perfect opportunity to let him go quietly. Sehwag as opener again, he will get another 200 against NZ in India and what happened in Oz will be quickly forgotten, if it hasnt been already. As for Rohit Sharma in Tests, the selectors reasoning defies logic ; he warmed the benches in Oz for a 0-4 whitewash, when VVS was scoring single digit score. And now that he's low in confidence, its convenient to drop him. Hopefully they won't do the same with Rahane.

  • Narbavi on August 10, 2012, 10:07 GMT

Regarding the test selection, its good really, just one thing for me is that Ishant Sharma hasn't played competitive cricket since getting injured few months ago, and he has been erratic before that, Why no praveen kumar?? he has done well in tests whenever he got an opportunity, have these people themselves decided that pk can't bowl in indian conditions? in that regard none other than Zak can bowl in indian conditions, just give that guy a chance and see what he can do rather than giving chances to ishant!!

I hope Rahane and Pujara are given a decent run... We know they're both proven match winners in the Ranji Trophy and it'd be a pity if they are dealt with the way the management handled Manoj Tiwary. And what has Harbhajan Singh done in Ranji or in county cricket to be picked for the T20 squad? That totally beats me.

Mixed reactions i would say, more so on the negative side, first of all happy that Yuvi is back, happy for L.Balaji too because he deserved it, but why have Harbhajan, Chawla ,Rohit and Tiwary been selected? How come Chawla makes the cut everytime a world cup squad is announced? Where is our back up keeper? For me, i would have brought in Uthappa as the back up keeper instead of Rohit, then Rahane instead of Tiwary, then Praveen kumar instead of Harbhajan and finally Rahul Sharma or Ojha instead of Chawla!!

  • PiyushD on August 10, 2012, 10:02 GMT

You select a player in Test Team when he is in form, then bench him even though the selected 11 is loosing all matches and then you bring the player back in ODIs and he has lost his form on bench and then you expel him from test team. This is BCCI which selects Test team from T-20 and ODI performances and drops players from Test team for their performance in ODI and T-20s. Welcome back Yuvraj Singh though it won't be easy for him, depends a lot on his fitness and his form.Selection of Harbhajan has no logic, he failed in India, failed abroad and has done nothing to get a recall, this explains lack of good spinners in domestic arena.

Why should Laxman's selection into India's test team become a news? He's a veteran of 131 test matches (if i am right?) Let's get one reason for him to get dropped now from test team. Some say he's a liability in the field. Comeon, after Rahul Dravid, it's Laxman who holds the maximum numbers of catches in the field. There's a thought in many, that Laxman should be mimicing a Bolt or Blake in the field. A team should contain experience, wisdom, young blood, dedication etc. No test 11 should have players all youth or all veterans. With Dravid out, Sachin and Laxman are having a bigger role to play. Pick the other 9 that fall into your Bolt's and Blakes. Coming to last two overseas test series, it's a rare exception for VVS to come up with only two half centuries. This makes it 8 tests out of 131 which is 6% of his total test career. I feel it's not fair

  • on August 10, 2012, 9:55 GMT

    Typical Indian selectors.

Bhajji struggled in Ranji Trophy, terrible in the IPL, and is now performing poorly for Essex. What's the solution? Bring him back to the Indian team.
