Virender Sehwag could be a doubt for the Champions League T20 after he strained a ligament in his left ankle during India's final Super Eights match in the World Twenty20 against South Africa in Colombo.

Sehwag went off the field during South Africa's innings and did not return. It was reported that he would need two weeks of rest. Sehwag had given up the Delhi Daredevils captaincy for the Champions League, which begins on October 9, but remained a key member of their squad. Delhi are scheduled to open their campaign on October 13 in Centurion.

Sehwag had a poor World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, scoring only 54 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 112 and was left out of the group game against England. India failed to qualify for the semi-finals despite winning four out of five matches, exiting the Super Eights on net run-rate.

@hagar009 - your words are so hollow. You should have played cricket!!!!!!

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 21:59 GMT)

Mr. hagar009,

Teams like Aus, SA and Pak win matches with their bowling not just with batting. India losing test matches is not as a result of Sachin scoring hundred but Indian bowlers not taking 20 wickets along with other batsmen not performing. Are you saying if Sachin had not scored those hundreds, India would have won?

Please think before you write.

Time to dump dhoni , gambhir , rohit sharma from T20. I want raina to lead indian team with kohli as vice captain. I know why sehwag and gambhir failed though. They do not want to win another world cup for Dhoni and dhoni come trumphet he won another world cup. Dhoni is bringing negative feeling from all team mates. Its jealousy or real animosity. I think for me dhoni has to be dumped if india wants to win big tournament. Dhoni lucks ran out. He become stagnant now. He was best captain india ever had but time to find new leader. I see raina as temp choice until kohli gets into leader slowly. Sehwag is special player , he needs to be give freedom to do what he wants. India can find 100s of run accumulator. Tough to find a destroyer because normally you see sloggers you find who can't be that consistent. Very difficult to find a strokemaker who score faster than a slogger. Dhoni insulted sehwag by benching him and lost badly. Hahaha. Unmukt chand should be in india team also.

Posted by raindelay on (October 4, 2012, 3:46 GMT)

Dhoni, gambhir, zaheer should retire from T20 s and concentrate on test and ODIs , dhoni lost 3 t20 world cup consecutively without making semis ,fast bowling also been taken seriously, particularly india giving importance to this dame IPL, champions leaugue t20 they should have atleast qualified for semis

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 20:03 GMT)

Gambhir out of T20s - only in for ODIs and Test. What is Manoj Tiwary, Pujara, Mukund and Rahane doing on the sidelines for all this time? If Sehwag doesn't do well in the next ODIs and Tests, he also should be dropped to make way for one of these players or even Vijay. Dhoni also should be out of test team, and Sachin must retire from all forms.

Posted by TigreTiburon on (October 3, 2012, 17:37 GMT)

Judging from his pot belly, India needs to do with him what England did with Samit Patel....Patel has come back a better cricketer...the point is, does Sehwag have it in him to work hard? Equally important, does the BCCI have the guts to discipline him? It is also clear that India need to start getting youngsters for ODIs and T-20s, while retaining the experienced cricketers for Tests. They, more than anything, need to insist on HIGH fielding standards for EVERY person in the team....very embarassing to see how Ashwin and Balaji field, the less said about Sehwag, Gambhir and Khan, the better....

Vijay had given rough deal in test side because of his last 3 consecutive ODI failures & Last T20 failures. This is wrong.

Vijay, Mukund, Rahane should fill top spot. Pujara, Kohli and then WK. Sachin. Sorry Badri. Dhoni should retire from Test. Karthik can come in now. But he is from TN. So unwritten policy and we can't have many players from same state.

But main problem in recent years, test team selection always around how to make Raina into it. By doing so, lot of talents are not tested properly. Both Dhoni & Raina are thick friends. Until some one break this, things will continue in wrong result. Raina is spirited player, no doubt. but test match is different.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 13:37 GMT)

it should have happened earlier. Had sehwag got injured earlier, India could have tried either Rahane, Uthappa or Shikhar as an opener in the T20 world cup. It could be a blessing for Unmukt Chand who now have a golden opportunity to show his credentials as a batsman by playing in Champions League. Sehwag's averages 21 against Australia and 27 against South Africa in ODIs (teams with good bowling attacks). So, He is always out of form when it comes to play against Australia and SA. I think BCCI should schedule the matches by seeing the sehwag's form, atleast we could see sehwag scoring runs against good bowling attacks.

Posted by soumyas on (October 3, 2012, 13:12 GMT)

selectors its high time to give chances to RAHANE , RAYUDU and M TIWARI. please forget Sehwag,Sharma even pathan.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 13:10 GMT)

we r expecting too much from 34y sehwag give him rest he should be conserved for india matches only here only i was disappointment seeing sachin played with broken finger and asked for rest after ipl ansd not playing for india being the senior most player in india this is not example set by him prefering money more than country before that i was big fan of him.bcci should take care of these players who crossed 30 years should pay the amount and they should conserve our only 3 fast bowlers (ishanth, umesh, aron) from too much t20 sure that is the reason they r not selected to t20 wc because bowlers like steyn, broad, gul came from test cricket to t20 that means they mastered swing bowling

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 12:55 GMT)

@hagar009 bowlers win test match and batsmen set them up in test matches india never produces decent fast bowler after kapil(he is also medium pacers) thats why tendulkar success rate is not high see Inzamam has good success rate because pakistan had great bowling unit

Posted by hagar009 on (October 3, 2012, 10:23 GMT)

Who are Match Winner's, Record says it all…. Tendulkar 51- Test 100's IND has won 20 Matches Ponting 41-Test 100's AUS has won 27 Matches Kallis 41-Test 100's SA has won 19 Matches Inzamam-ul-Haq 25-Test 100's Pak has won 17 Matches

Posted by cric_freakNo2 on (October 3, 2012, 9:59 GMT)

still the same old indian fans who worry about the batting. cricket is a game which cannot be won by batting alone. untill the minute the selectors& management realize this india will never be as dominent & consistent team as AUS & SA are. atleast now concentrate on bowling and fielding. Forget the idea of taking wickets, present indian bowlers cant even stop runs.

Posted by kingcobra85 on (October 3, 2012, 8:49 GMT)

Damn a day to late. Get Manoj Tiwary , Mukund or heck any youngster in

Posted by rahulcricket007 on (October 3, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

PLEASE DROP HIM FROM TEAM . GAMBHIR SHOULD ALSO BE DROPPED . INDIA SHOULD INJECT NEW OPENERES IN FORM OF RAHANE , RAYUDU /TIWARI .

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 7:51 GMT)

It's the time Sehwag can get to analyze if he really still the same Sehwag who used to Wack the bowlers out of the park.

Posted by timohyj on (October 3, 2012, 7:28 GMT)

it was the lamest injury ever. he jumped up to celebrate the wicket and twisted his ankle when he fell. Anyway, all you people who are saying sehwag and gambhir should be dropped should remember that alistair cook had a horrible time in tests a few years ago when he couldn't even get into double digits for more than a year. But he got his form back and one of the most prolific runs in test history. You can pick players on past performances because you know they have got what it takes and it is only a matter of time before they come good. Also, you can't say someone should be dropped after not performing in T20. Of the young batsmen, only Rahane is any good. They could have him open in tests and have sehwag play in the middle order but that would mean raina would have to be dropped and then there would only be 1 left hander in the team

Posted by Naresh28 on (October 3, 2012, 7:23 GMT)

@raj walla - India cannot afford to hang on to old guys. We respect what they did when they were at peak. For your info look at INDIA A in NZ. Both Menaria and Mandeep have posted 150+ scores.

Indian selectors need to make wholesome CHANGES to Indian team in all formats. We need to get rid of GAMBHIR/SHEWAG as openers. We need new YOUNG BOWLERS and batsman are there to replace some of the OLDER players. These two areas of our game is making team India lose. The whole tournament and ZAKS takes wickets in our last game???? Also I was one who believed that ROHIT was our star player but he has failed - the experiment should stop there. We have players like VIJAY, DHAWAN,RAHANE, MUKUND, CHAND - PUJARA needs to be brought into other formats as well. Good Luck and best wishes to the teams who make the final. May the best team win

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 7:22 GMT)

India always have great batsman. People say , they can play only in subcontinent pitches. Sehwag has performed well in Australia also. But one who stand tall against this allegation is SUNIL GAVASKAR.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 7:19 GMT)

Throw both Sehwag and Gambhir out permanently and bring in Rahane, Vijay or Mukund.. They can surely make big impact than these useless cricketers who smashes the ball to all parts only when they captain their respective sides in IPL..

Posted by joseyesu on (October 3, 2012, 6:55 GMT)

Give him a long rest...who cares after his dismal performance in WC?

Posted by shalimar1234 on (October 3, 2012, 6:37 GMT)

Mind you many great names have not performed in T20 cricket. Afridi, Sehwag, Tendulkar, Clarke, Ponting to name a few.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 6:32 GMT)

mtkund and rahane should open for india. When these two get edjed or bowled, it is lack of techniqe and sehwag&gambir can do anything. Rubbish..,get them out of the team.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 6:04 GMT)

Bring on the real reason for injuries. Why all sudden Gambhir, Shewag, Zak, Sachin not performing ? People who are talking about Mukund, Vijay, Dhawan should know, they all failed when they went toplay at bowler friendly pitches. They are like Rohit Sharma . There is too much cricket and all these playes,r physically cant take it. India played well and we should be proud of our team. We were little unlucky.

Posted by soumyas on (October 3, 2012, 5:42 GMT)

Keep sehwag out of team atleast 10 years..;)

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 4:31 GMT)

Here we go again. lost all the big games, lost test matches 8-0, but now we are talking about champions league.Hate this...

Posted by Narbavi on (October 3, 2012, 4:12 GMT)

@Surajdon9: Jealous of his record eh?? Don't worry he won't damage your team further, and by the way i'm happy that he will miss the champs league as it will give him time to get back strong for the test series!!

Posted by golgoal on (October 3, 2012, 4:02 GMT)

@ vja_maverick - I agree with you about Gambhir and Rohit being useless as well. Dhoni comes at No. 7. Are you expecting him to make centuries in T20 from there??

Posted by Baber_Baloch on (October 3, 2012, 3:57 GMT)

He is great player ...he can paly big shots when ever india he gave good start....plez Veru get well soon... good wishes from Pakistan.

Posted by dhoni_sachin_fan on (October 3, 2012, 3:49 GMT)

Great. Drop him for the England series and get a more deserving person (Rahane or Mukund) in the playing XI

Posted by Raj12345 on (October 3, 2012, 2:58 GMT)

Great. Now DD must be relieved by seeing this news. One luggage is out. DD has good chance win their matches now.

Posted by vja_maverick on (October 3, 2012, 2:50 GMT)

don't know why people are se after Sehwag. Its more like the comments that I used to see for Laxman. What did Gambhir do the whole tournament? or is Rohit Sharma any better? Is Dhoni barring the last match where he could hit a few boundaries any better?

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 1:09 GMT)

Most destructive player ever for India !! Its impossible to replace him in the team with a player of his attitude and agressivenes... Wish He recovers soon !!

Posted by Karnain on (October 3, 2012, 0:40 GMT)

Mahela Jayawardane - I need you for the Champions League, get well soon.

Posted by Meety on (October 2, 2012, 23:44 GMT)

Oh no - missing out on the Champ League - no way! It's an outrage! == == == On a serious note, could he be foxing, & is keen on knuckling down for the Test series v England??????

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 23:06 GMT)

his days are done.... he really has under achieved in the shorter formats and it seems as if teams are starting the figure him out in the longest format..... pitches are changing and he cant adapt.....

Posted by Surajdon9 on (October 2, 2012, 22:09 GMT)

Good news.He need to retire now old off man......

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:50 GMT)

Nawab of Najafgarh Veer Virendra Sehwag - always will be feared by opposing teams and minor critics. Viru you ARE THE BEST ! Nothing else matters. Get well Viru bhai

Sorry mates, I cannot agree with any of you. In my honest opinion, dear Viru can still push through the Champion's League and go for rest/surgery only afterwards. He will have the enviable opportunity to skip the rigours of Tests while recuperating, and I am sure, he will be ready to lead DD in IPL6. Go buddy!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 20:39 GMT)

he got himself unfit while jumping over Pathan on wicket celebration

Posted by ddlj26 on (October 2, 2012, 20:18 GMT)

well i am sad to see Sehwag in his final cricketing days go out with injury, it has been a pleasure watching you play for India and thrill billions of people, but looks his days are numbered.... Time to move on India and find the next opener

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 19:53 GMT)

A terrific player !!! He needs good rest before the Poms arrive in November. Delhi Daredevils have KP. Mahela, Warner etc to shoulder the batting. They have enough firepower to life the cup in CLT20.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 19:10 GMT)

I love how you havent mentioned HOW he got injured :p haha

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 19:06 GMT)

Good. He needs to concentrate on Test cricket.
