Umesh Yadav returns to action in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Umesh Yadav, the India fast bowler, will return to competitive cricket when he takes the field for Vidarbha in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Odisha on Thursday in Indore. He last played for India in the Ahmedabad Test in November 2012 before a stress reaction of the back sidelined him. Yadav said he will be selective and will manage his workload in the IPL that follows.

"This will be my first competitive game in four months," Yadav told PTI. "Irrespective of the amount of effort you put in at the nets, there is no substitute to match practice. Tomorrow, I will get an idea about how I am shaping up. I am planning to play all the group league games, which are on successive days, which will provide me with an idea as to how my body is holding up."

Yadav also said he will take it easy during the IPL and will monitor his workload properly, lest he puts his back under too much pressure too soon. "I have fully recovered from my lower-back injury. I will be available from the first match for Delhi Daredevils, but considering the number of matches and the amount of travel involved, I need to be careful about the workload and will speak to the coaches regarding that." The Daredevils play their first match on April 3.

Yadav resumed bowling in the first week of March, and has been under the supervision of the specialists at the National Cricket Academy. "I didn't want to rush my comeback," Yadav said. "When I first started bowling, it was off a four-step run-up. Gradually, I increased it to eight steps, and from there to 12 steps. Now I am bowling with my full run-up, which is 16 steps."

I think Team India, needs to re look very seriously about the team combination for South Africa. I would like to believe that , if they do well in SA, we can forgive them for England series loss. I think Sachin has to play. My team would be 1. M Vijay 2. Gambhir 3. Pujara 4. Sachin 5. Dhawan 6. Dhoni 7. B Kumar 8. Ashwin 9. Ishant 10. Zaheer 11. Umesh yadav.

Reserves : Rahane, yuvraj, Shami Ahmed, Jadeja, H Singh

    Hi Naga,

After a long time i have seen a team selected on the pure merit basis & according to the condition. Well done some selector have seen this list.

  • hawk707 on March 28, 2013, 4:22 GMT

@Shaik Salaudin, completely agree with u. Also dhoni is not a good bowler friendly captain and also most of the indian pitches are spin friendly. That could be the reason umesh is not hurry(as per umesh's statement above) in return. Ofcourse more importantly ipl is a commercial factor now a days.

  • Red_Drag0n on March 28, 2013, 3:26 GMT

@Nagaraju Pallasetty mate good team but Zaheer is too old to play for India i reckon. Instead, Ishwar pandey or Shami are better options.

  • on March 27, 2013, 16:20 GMT

What a comeback! 5 wickets in 15 balls.

Now IPL is starting every bowler will be fit now.

  • on March 27, 2013, 14:36 GMT

DD should not play Yadav too much. He will be needed on the fast pitches of South Africa when India go there

  • on March 27, 2013, 5:47 GMT

When he arrived, I thought Umesh was the fittest fast bowler to represent India after Kapil. His delivery stride was smooth and his action was simple. Moreover, he comes from a hilly terrain and seemed naturally to fit the bill. Hardly a couple of seasons down the line, he is down like a typical Indian fast bowlers. Wonder whether he will compromise his pace to stay fit like Munaf and Irfan did though their fitness is still questionable.

  • on March 27, 2013, 3:29 GMT

i think umesh yadav should not play ipl this year he should rest himself for the south africa tour india will need him badly there

  • Meety on March 27, 2013, 2:57 GMT

I mean this out of respect, I was sort of glad he was unavailable against Oz recently. Couldn't of handled things being any worse, I really rate the lad!

  • AjberTheGangulian on March 27, 2013, 2:45 GMT

Now the fans wait for 2 months to see how many comes out alive after ipl to play for india and how many is lost during this circus

  • AK47_pk on March 26, 2013, 20:30 GMT

Y put ur body in for injuries playing 5 days cricket when u can earn alot more than that in couple if overs? Malinga got it right nd yadav zaheer irfan nd other indian players getting it right too. Soon indian players will play only in ipl nd matches played in india where they can score runs nd do commerxials at the same time.

  • Vivek_Singh3089 on March 26, 2013, 19:29 GMT

Best of luck for your comeback!!!..hope you stay fir & fine....Umesh Yadav is right now the core of Indian Pace Attack as Zaheer has declined while Ishant is still a hack...Yadav, Shami, Bhuvi, Aaron, Praveen should form the nucleus of our pace attack...BCCI should give opportunity to Parvinder Awana & Pankaj Singh in place of useless Ishant....Siddharth Kaul is also an emerging fast bowler along with Ishwar Pandey.....hope BCCI manages them well, we always had good bowlers...only thing is we don't know how to manage & use them wisely...RP Singh, Munaf, Nehra, Sreesanth are few prime examples of wasted talents..

  • Anubhav-the-Experience on March 26, 2013, 17:46 GMT

Yadav + Shami Irfan Bhuvneshwar and are people to trust....I hope Ishant get to his previous best and Zaheer gats back in team.

  • RaviTeja11 on March 26, 2013, 17:22 GMT

dont understand why evrybody say one should not play t20 n ipl .... if a bowler is fit and wants to comeback through ipl what's wrong in it ?..... jst remember if he can't bowl 4 overs in t20/ipl how can u tell he can bowl 25 overs a day in a test?? injury can happen to anyone anytime so dont blame ipl if they r fit by april 1st.... Shame on you fans!! If a player chosses to play ipl its nt a crime ..rather its a sensible move as they can get high class coaching....

  • on March 26, 2013, 14:41 GMT

yadav got injured because he bowled lot of overs in nets to indian batsmen, as he is the sole pacer in India, in T20 it requires only 4 overs by the bowler, that should not be a problem, why there is no telecast of syed mushtaq ali t20 tournament?

  • realfan on March 26, 2013, 14:24 GMT

i thought he was not going to play ipl, every body will be fit for ipl all of a sudden...... i hope bhuvaneshwar and pujara wont play ipl.....

  • binu.emiliya on March 26, 2013, 14:14 GMT

Sidharth Koul will lead DD bowling attack this year with Morkel, Yadav can play some matches and he shuld concentrate SA tour

  • on March 26, 2013, 14:05 GMT

Why do we blame cricketers when they try to earn an economic future for themselves? We do not blame a CEO when he changes company for more salary, we do not blame researchers when they leave India and go to work for foreign Universities, we do not blame doctors when they open private practice.... then why the double standard with cricketers??

  • on March 26, 2013, 13:38 GMT

keep moving, yadav ji, we require pace in south africa

  • on March 26, 2013, 13:17 GMT

he should stop playing ipl and t-20 and focus must be only on test cricket. this is best method to prolong your injury ridden career and india cant afford an injured umesh yadav for overseas tour later this year

  • on March 26, 2013, 13:04 GMT

Yadav no matter you play for DD in IPL or not we need you in the SA series kindly make sure you play them. Good Luck.

  • on March 26, 2013, 13:03 GMT

Nothing mentioned about the pace at which he is bowling now.. earlier before injury he was hitting mid-to-late 140s at times and early 140s consistently. Waiting to watch if he has maintained that pace, if not improved on it, now. Just hope he hasn't deteriorated like most of recent Indian Medium Pacers who were once considered FAST bowlers.

  • cric_gates on March 26, 2013, 12:59 GMT

i was 100% sure that he along with Zaheer, Munaf, varun aron, parveen,GAUTAM GAMBHIR and irfan will be fit before IPL.Real shame!!!!
