Kochi IPL players to be in 2012 auction

35

The player auction for the 2012 IPL will be held in late January or early February and the teams will have an additional salary cap of $2 million, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The players from the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise, which was terminated earlier this year, will be part of the auction.

According to a formal communication from the IPL Governing Council, which met earlier today in Chennai, the squad sizes for each team have been increased from 30 to 33, with eleven foreign players per squad, up one from the previous limit of 10. However, the number of foreign players that can be part of the final XI will remain at four.

The teams will play their games on a home-and-away basis, so each of the nine teams will play 16 games as opposed to 14 in 2011. The changes mean the IPL reverts back to its original format, where all the teams played each other twice, a format that the franchises have always preferred. There were no changes to the play-off format. The two finalists, Chennai and Bangalore, will host the play-offs in 2012.

The decision to include the Kochi players in the player auction effectively means the board has decided to stick with nine teams for the time being. The BCCI voted to terminate the Kochi franchise at its annual general meeting in September. At the time board president N Srinivasan said that the governing council would decide on whether to issue a tender for a 10th franchise.

Should any of the Kochi players fail to attract the bid, their salaries will be covered by the IPL through the franchise's bank guarantee worth Rs 156 crores that has been encashed by the BCCI. Among the leading players that will be part of the auction are Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, Mahela Jayawardene and Ravindra Jadeja.

An official of one of the franchises was satisfied with the format for the 2012 season but not with the decision to increase squad size. "After Kochi went, the home-and-away format is a logical step," the official told ESPNcricinfo. "But 33 players is too much. Even 30 were too many. What they are trying to do is to ensure that the Kochi players get hired. If they are not hired, then the IPL has to pay for them. So they are trying to push that cost to the franchises by saying, 'Some you hire and some we'll hire'. Otherwise it makes no sense to increase the foreign players' count to 11. Even ten was too many as you are only playing four."

The governing council also decided that the first window for trading players will be between December 15 and January 20, with a shorter window after the auction. There is no financial cap on trading, though each franchise can add only a maximum of four players to their squad through trading.

In other IPL news, Chris Gayle is likely to stay with Royal Challengers Bangalore as a rule that allows the team which hired the replacement player to have the first right over him has been retained. Gayle transformed Royal Challengers' fortunes after being brought in following Australia fast bowler Dirk Nannes' injury early in the 2011 season, steering the team to the finals.

Also, in a jolt to the IPL, MAXX Mobile, the sponsors for the strategic timeout, have decided to terminate their three-year contract which was signed in 2010. The governing council deliberated on possible action against the company in case it does not compensate the IPL for exiting the contract ahead of the expiry date.

The Indian bowlers ll be hot sellers.. They got 3 fast (Vinay, Sree and RP) and two spinners (RJ or Powar).. RJ will be the pick of the season and Vinay ll be next.. I wish Chennai get Murali back.. He belongs to the team.. He missed the team really.. Any other team dont know how to handle him.. CSK dont have any other slot left.. Wish they pick RP or RJ.. Bad to allow Gayle to be with RCB as he was replacement.. Home-Away games are better.. Now fans can have clear idea what and how the games are played.. Wish the ticket prices are lowered a bit to allow fans to enjoy the game without burning pockets..

Kochi Tuskers were terminated only bcoz of dirty politics inside IPL. When Kochi got an IPL team itself, games were going on to shift the team from Kochi to Gujarat. This is the main reason, they conducted half of the home matches in Indore. Now when they could not move Tuskers outside Kochi, dirty tricks & games were played to terminate Kochi. It is very unfortunate that BCCI also supported to eliminate Kochi. Now most probably, you will see a team coming from Indore or from Gujarat. I wish, if some strong business man or group comes forward to fight for Kochi team and reinstate the team for next IPL.

Further, IPL tournament should be squeezed into maximum of 1 month period (whether it is 1 group or 2 groups). The longer the tournament prolongs, people will lose interest in matches, even hard core cricket lovers, like us.

dc should bring rp singh, vvs laxman & r.jadeja to their team. MI should bring parthib patel,r.power & most priced MAHELA JAYAWARDHANE. RCB should bring vinay kumar & thissara perera. CSK will definitely go for muralitharan

IPL can be more interesting if there should be a limit of maximum games (ideally 8)for a player in group stage. By this way, more players would play the game (rather then warming the bench) and get 'so called International exposure' and burning out problem of national players will be reduced significantly.

I think Chennai should go for Jadeja. They are wasting a batting position by playing WSaha. And MI should go for either McCulam or Mahela both because they are in need of a solid opener and a good middle order batsman.

  • RathishCochin on December 11, 2011, 8:03 GMT

This is rubbish things done by BCCI. Its not fair to terminate a team without giving them another chance. In last year when they terminate Punjab and Rajastan, we all Malayalies support both the teams. But now we are alone, no other cities people supporting us. And now our players are on for sale..

I still hope we can come back to IPL along with our same players.."Please support us"

ipl 1,2 and 3 are good with 8 teams and good rules with total number 60 matches, later addition of pune and kochi made this ipl non sense with increase in matches tto much cricket wont help bcci.if bcci takes action on maxx mobile seeing TRP ratings in future no companies when franchices will loose its money officially.any way the new rule of 11 players would have come from RCB to keep gayle in their team.I support ipl for 2 reasons in country like india where sports were not encouraged so much will give some financial assistance and exposure of their of quality of the players who did nt get international chance.my biggest worry about ipl and other t20 leagues is it can kill interest in cricket.so bcci you may KILL THE HEN WHICH LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS TO U.

IN MY OPINION :- R VINAY KUMAR IN RCB SQUAD. MAHELA AND McULLUM WILL SOLD BY RR TO STRONG UP THEIR LINE UP. DELHI OR PUNJAB WILL BUY MURALITHARAN. PUNE WILL BUY R P SINGH. RAVINDER JADEJA WILL SOLD BY DECCAN CHARGERS OR KKR.

OMYGAWD! What will I do now without the MAXX Mobile time out!!!

The withdrawal of MAXX Mobile tells us how T20 cannot be taken for granted anymore even in India!! I think only playing 16 games is not a good idea!!! We need 24 games if not 32 games! Long live IPL!!!!

  • Bruisers on December 10, 2011, 21:10 GMT

In my opinion, Jadeja will be grabbed by MI, Vinay Kumar will be most sought by RCB, MI & Pune. Since teams like MI, RCB, RR, Pune don't have a specialist wicketkeeper-batsman, they will look for Parthiv and McCullum. Mahela might go to Delhi or RR. CSK might want Murali back. Others like Hodge, RP Singh will be targeted by franchises for their base prices. It will also be interesting to see whether players like Laxman, Sreesanth, Powar find any takers..

The BCCI is really trying hard to make sure Kochi players are sold.. else they will have to pay their salaries. Why else would they raise the salary caps by $2million? Kochi had a salary cap of $9mn. There are 9 more teams remaining. It would have been fair to increase the cap by a $1mn each. Plus some teams still have some budget remaining... The only reason can be to accommodate bids of above $1mn for a player... The only gainers in this transaction are the Kochi players. The Indian players in that team will get really good bids. I expect Jadeja to cross the $1.5mn mark. With Shane Warne gone, Rajasthan's budget must be really high. They should target Jadeja and McCullum...

No one really cares. Instead of a tournament that was supposed to be city vs city it has transformed into a tournament of one rick man's team vs another rich man's team.
