Waqar wants to groom young captain

ESPNcricinfo staff

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has praised captain Misbah-ul-Haq for stabilising the national team, in his report to the PCB on Pakistan's tour of the West Indies. However, Waqar wrote that since Misbah was already 37 years old, Pakistan needed to start grooming a young captain for the 2015 World Cup.

"I have to give full credit to Misbah as he has stabilised the team and leads from the front," Waqar wrote in his report, excerpts of which have been published in Dawn. "His performance is also outstanding. He makes the boys feel comfortable and relaxed so they actually enjoy their cricket. He is mature and willing to listen.

"The only unfortunate thing is the age factor which is not in Misbah's favour. On that account, I don't think he will be able to lead the side in the next World Cup [2015], and therefore I would advise that we should start grooming a young captain from now."

In excerpts of the same report published earlier, Waqar had described Shahid Afridi, who captained Pakistan for limited-overs leg of the Caribbean tour, as immature and undisciplined. After his return from the West Indies, Afridi hinted at differences with Waqar, and team manager Intikhab Alam's report on the tour suggested a rift between the two. Afridi was removed as ODI captain and replaced by Misbah.

While Waqar's criticism of Afridi was severe, the rest of the report had a distinctly positive tone. He mentioned the growth of Mohammad Hafeez, who has backed up his impressive bowling performances with three half-centuries and a hundred in his last seven ODI innings. "Hafeez has been exceptional, both with the ball and the bat. He was timing the ball sweetly and worked with the game plan when bowling. He is now taking responsibility as a senior member of the team."

Also in line for praise were Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman, who Waqar said were developing into match-winners. Waqar backed the younger players as well, saying Asad Shafiq, Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal and Azhar Ali were all improving. Mohammad Salman, he said, was a good wicketkeeper but needed to get rid of his nerves.

Waqar also noted that senior batsman Younis Khan, who missed the tour of the West Indies, was still an important part of the side. "It was quite unfortunate that he had to leave the squad on the West Indies tour and returned home due to his brother's death. He was missed on the tour because he is one of the key players in the batting line-up."

afridi has been an over-rated cricketer. his 313 wickets in 350 ODI matches speak for how good wicket taker he is. 50% of the total matches lost in last 15 years were because of shahid afridi. brain is the necessity to be a captain but afridi has not got one. we have lost even to west indies half team in T20I under his leadership. i think we should overlook him and stick with abdur rehman for leg spin and afridis batting has always been horrible especially averaging 9.5 in the last 12 months.. to his credit he has got wickets against kenya and other minnows in the world

Today Waqar saying Misbah is establish team. but tommorrow there is no guarantee of PCB to put captain any one for atleast one year this is my guarantee. Shahid Afridi is much better than Misbah ul Huq. Now Misbah is age 37, Afridi is 31, so Afridi should be the Pakistan captain. Look at the past World Cup record of Pakistani team. Waqar Younis is the captain of 2003 wat happen due to the poor performance of the team first round exit of pakistan in 2003 then Inzimam in 2007 wat happen again due to poor performance first round exit. Look at Shahid Afiridi team unexpreinced expreince balanced team reaching at Semifinal its a good sign of captaincy. Winning against minnows what Waqar thinking Misbah doing good job future will tell who is the best Waqar or Aijaz Butt or Misbah.

@ Mohammed deel Ahmed if WC is criteria to judge the better captain then , i reckon you will also say that Mr. Afridi is better Captain then Ricky Ponting and Gream Smith, because both Australia and South Africa were unable to reach in SF???? ridiculous .....

It is easily understandable that people supporting captain's other than Afridi are anti pakistan cricket. How can a pro pakistan cricket person even think like this?

So as usual another under-performer will be pakistan captain..long live the tradition of younis khan, shoaib malik , afridi , misbah , and now the great m.hafeez...

I would recommend 3 captains for all three type of games this will help find the best in the field, and the best and one with longest possible career may take over from other captain who is not doing sufficiently well... and please guys kindly accept the hard truth that Afridi was never a captain and he have no skills to lead.

I see a lot of people still supporting Afridi and compairing him to the former captains of Pakistan. Afridi has been my favorite since I saw him playing and I still have sympathy with him but I do not think that he was a captain material, in my opinion he wanted to be like Imran Khan but he can't even get close to his personality or the leadership skills and I would agree that he is still immature. And if we recall 2003 world cup, yes we did have the best team and best players in the squad but it wasn't united comparing to 2011 team. To make the story short, people need to understand the Afridi was immature, he has no personality outside of cricket feild, no sence of how to talk to deliver any sort of speech, but still I would love to see him play as a player but when it comes to profesonalism, he is not the guy.
