Primus headlines T&T win; Guyana crush Jamaica

Debutant Roshon Primus' all-round efforts - a match haul of 7 for 68 and a key knock of 36 not out in the first innings - were instrumental in Trinidad & Tobago's nine-wicket win over Windward Islands in the opening round of the Regional 4 Day Tournament in Port of Spain. T&T needed only three days to complete the win, having gained an early advantage by bowling their opponents out for 142 in the first innings. Primus took 6 for 30 with his seam-bowling in one spell that reduced Windward from 31 for 2 to 50 for 8. It was only opener Devon Smith's unbeaten 86 and his 73-run stand with No. 10 batsman Delorn Johnson that lifted the side's total past 100. They were eventually dismissed for 142.

T&T responded by scoring 242 runs for a first-innings lead of 100. Primus was one of only four batsmen in the side to score more than 30 and added valuable runs after they were struggling at 192 for 6 following the loss of top-scorer Jason Mohammed who made a 95-ball 70. Opener Kyle Hope, too, chipped in with 56 giving T&T a good start.

Windward did much better in their second innings, scoring 254, but were limited by legspinner Imran Khan's 5 for 84 and the fact that they had conceded a 100-run lead. Tyrone Theophile (53) and wicketkeeper Sunil Ambris (43) chipped in but, like T&T's innings, the rally came from the lower order. Shane Shillingford took charge with a knock of 65 off 94 balls and an eighth-wicket partnership with Mervin Matthew helped Windward inch closer to 250 from 196 for 7.

T&T's chase of 155 appeared untroubled with Hope leading the way at the top of the order again. Like the first innings, he was the main contributor to the opening stand, in this instance a partnership of 61 runs, before pairing with Yannic Cariah to add 96 runs for the second wicket. Hope was unbeaten on 79 while Cariah scored 52 not out.

Left-arm spinners Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai and Veerasammy Permaul took 16 wickets between them, as Guyana registered a 181-run win over Jamaica at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Guyana captain Leon Johnson put on 98 for the second wicket with Rajendra Chandrika after electing to bat. He had come in during the fourth over, after the dismissal of Shimron Hetmeyer, and was dismissed for 19 by debutant medium-pacer Derval Green (3-72) with the score on 111. Chandrika, who had done the bulk of the scoring, was removed by Nikita Miller (4-71) shortly after, for 86. Shivnarine Chanderpaul (91) and Raymon Reifer (40) were the only other batsmen to get past 20. Their 68-run partnership was the only other significant stand before first innings folded up for 298.

Jamaica's response began with a 73-run opening stand that was broken by Keon Joseph. John Campbell, who scored 71, and was the next wicket to fall and initiated a spinners' dominance that saw them take the other nine wickets for just 95 runs, to bowl Jamaica out for 208. Permaul, who had removed Campbell, finished with 5 for 60, while Moti-Kanhai took 4 for 66.

Guyana consolidated on their first-innings lead, led by half-centuries from Johnson (69) and Vishaul Singh (71) that helped them post 238 for 4 in the second dig. Jamaica, chasing 329, lost two wickets before stumps on the third day.

Jermaine Blackwood scored a fighting 96 on the fourth day, but found no support as Keon Joseph (3-19) joined the party with Permaul (3-63) and Moti-Kanhai (4-35), to bowl Jamaica out for 147.

Barbados were 70 off the target, scoring 235 for five, as they settled for a draw against Leeward Islands in St. Kitts. The match witnessed an all-round performance from offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall, who continued his rich vein of form from the series against Sri Lanka A.

Chasing 305 for a win, Barbados batted for 80 overs after Leeward Islands declared on 164 for 6, 12 overs into the fourth day. Leeward Islands added 75 runs in those 12 overs, in a spell of play that saw Cornwall scoring a 51-ball 60 - his second half-century of the match - to lift his team from their overnight score of 89 for 5 as they looked to capitalize on a 140-run first-innings lead.

Cornwall then removed Omar Philips in the first over of Barbados' chase, before a second-wicket partnership of 109 which took 45.5 overs. That partnership was between Anthony Alleyne (84) and Shamarh Brooks (59). West Indies international Roston Chase then put on 62 for the third wicket with Alleyne in 13.5 overs, to keep Barbados interested briefly. But two quick wickets fell, and he shut shop to remain unbeaten on 51.

Earlier in the match, Leeward Islands had bowled out Barbados' 237, thanks to Cornwall's ninth five-wicket haul. This came after he had scored 84, along to with Nkrumah Bonner's 94, to help Leeward Islands post 377 after electing to bat.

Cornwall finished with nine wickets and was declared the Player of the Match.
