A three-wicket burst by Jhye Richardson ensured Australia U-19s remained in control at Chester-le-Street after they had piled up 446. England made a strong start to their reply, reaching 143 for 1, before Richardson struck three times in two overs although an unbroken sixth-wicket stand between Aaron Thomason and Ryan Davies stabilised England before the close.

Australia had resumed on 373 for 8 after losing Richardson to the final ball of the opening day, but a ninth-wicket stand of 72 between David Grant and Liam Hatcher meant there was no swift end to the innings for England. Eventually, Matthew Parkinson, the legspinner, broke through for his sixth wicket then Ben Green claimed his third.

England began confidently in reply as Tom Alsop dominated an opening stand of 95 with Max Holden. Alsop hit nine fours and six in his 103-ball 66 before being trapped lbw by Fletcher Seymour, although Australia still had to wait some time to really get into England's innings.

Holden ground his way to a 158-ball fifty before he was caught behind off Richardson on the stroke of tea and by the time the over was completed after the break Richardson had his second when Dan Lawrence, the 17-year-old Essex batsman who hit a Championship century against Surrey earlier this season, fell for a duck.

England lost another wicket before they could shift themselves off 143 as Callum Taylor was bowled second ball by Richardson and when Haseeb Hameed was lbw to Hatcher the follow-on was looming at 161 for 5.

However, for the final 20 overs of the day there was a solid partnership between Thomason and Davies which cut the deficit to 204.
