A lower-order collapse restricted Western Australia to 301 but their bowlers, led by fast bowler Simon Mackin, struck back leaving Tasmania at a shaky 7 for 170 at the end of the second day.
Western Australia began the day at 4 for 231, with Shaun Marsh at the crease but the Tasmania bowlers found success quickly as they managed to bundle out the last five Western Australia wickets for 35 runs. Fast bowler Andrew Fekete finished with 3 for 67, while James Faulkner took two wickets.
Right from the start, Tasmania's innings suffered due to a lack of partnerships. Mackin dismissed Jordan Silk and Ed Cowan in the space of four overs and the middle order, too, failed to put up the runs. James Faulkner and Tim Paine hauled Tasmania from 5 for 84 with a 46-run partnership for the sixth wicket before falling in successive overs. Ben Hilfenhaus then contributed a sprightly 30-ball 32 to push the score further.
