Nuwan Kulasekara joins squad for ODIs

Nuwan Kulasekara, the Sri Lanka fast bowler, will join the squad for the ODI series in South Africa after four months on the sidelines. Lasith Malinga, Upul Tharanga and Kosala Kulasekara will also be part of the one-day leg of the tour, while Chanaka Welegedara, Kaushal Silva, Thilan Samaraweera, Tharanga Paranavitana, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kanishka Alvitigala will not be involved after the Test series concludes.

Sri Lanka picked a different spin attack to the one they played against Pakistan in the UAE, their previous one-day series. Suraj Randiv, Jeevan Mendis and Seekkuge Prasanna, who were in the squad against Pakistan, were left out, with the selectors sticking with Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis, who are already in South Africa.

Nuwan Kulasekara, who has not played for Sri Lanka since picking up an injury in their home ODI series against Australia in August, was initially set to join the squad for the second and third Tests in South Africa. Sri Lanka's sports ministry, however, vetoed his selection and the uncapped Kanishka Alvitigala was picked instead. Alvitigala did not get a game in the Test series and has now been replaced by Kulasekara.

Malinga, who is retired from Test cricket, and Tharanga were the expected additions to the squad in South Africa, while allrounder Kosala Kulasekara, who played only one Test and one ODI on the tour of the UAE, retained his spot.

Herath, who is considered more suited to Tests, was kept for the ODIs after he took nine wickets in Sri Lanka's upset of South Africa in Durban. Ajantha Mendis, meanwhile, did not play a Test but was picked in the ODI squad after being dropped for the series against Pakistan. He was chosen ahead of Prasanna, who took just four wickets in five ODIs in the UAE.

Squad: Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), Angelo Mathews (vc), Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Kosala Kulasekara, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath, Dhammika Prasad, Dilhara Fernando, Lahiru Thirimanne

we are 1 batsman short... i think instead of kosala they shud hav opted fr kapugedara or sum other middle order batsman to bat at no7 bse none of our fast bowling allrounders are gud enough wit the bat to go in at no7... with 2 new balls and SA conditions and pace attack we have to play 7 batsmen... now atleast they shud pick thirimanna into the XI as the 7th batsman and angelo and dilshan to fill in the 5th bowler

As before, where is eranga, jeevan mendis, randhiv, why is it dimuth karunaratne doesnt get a fair run? Pradeep? As usual these selections make no sense...

    Samaraweera should play :)

I like to see Chandimal at number 3 because he is the one who is going to replace Sangakkara in the future and I also think that there should have been another genuine batsmen in the squad too.

I hope Jeevan Mendis comes back soon. He has been performing decently with both bat & ball and really adds a sense of balance to the team, like Mathews.

Dear all, I never agree with the selecton for the south African One day tour.my first opion will be kapugedara…lots of the are gathering negative thoughts about this young talented player.he is just 24 years old.kapugedara is one of the unfortunate players in sri lanka cricket. Becausein flat pitches Top order batsmen's made big runs and given opportunity to kapu in last 10 overs…& good pitches top orders batsmen pay there wicket early & giving pressure to young kapgedara & company…(ect kandamby/Matthews…ect)….so pls think about this more than you saw in the match…are ther any comment about this pls….Pls save our Young players…….good luck…

I don't like these picks at all, are there no young good pace bowlers left in Sri Lanka? These days in cricket if you want to compete as a good fast bowler, you not only need accuracy but also pace, we have to accept that...

I mean look at all the best bowling attacks in the world, they all have a few guys who can bowl over 145kmp, we have one and the rest are all 125-135kmp.... Kulesakera's gentle 125kmp inswingers will do nothing against the South African batsmen, just wait and see.

And please stop mentioning Kapugedara... He had soo many oppurtunities and failed every time, his ODI average is pathetic. Yes he had to bat under pressure, but Sri Lanka desperatly need those kind of batsmen, and if he can't adapt to that style then we should find someone that can.

No Randiv again... He peforms really well and gets no luck. He should have replaced Herath. I guess the only inclusion I like is Tharanga, the man is very underated and we really needed him in the tests...

  • on January 4, 2012, 21:22 GMT

Nuwan Kulasekara will get a couple of wickets with the new ball...and may be bowl some economical overs at the death! This would keep him in the team for another 6 months till he is dropped again. The same cycle will continue till he retires! We really need to look ahead of him and look for fresher blood. I really hope he gets hammered in his comeback games so he could be dropped give way to a youngster.

Last time these two teams played a series Sri Lanka won 5-0 ! last match played in SA , Sri Lanka won by 150 !

  • yorkslanka on January 4, 2012, 20:24 GMT

cant believe why jeevan mendis has not been included, as others have said, he bowls well, can bat and is a very good fielder..he performed well in england so why drop him??also randhiv and ernaga should be in this team..donesnt anyone else think its weird how so many players are getting injured...

What is the point of selecting Rangana for ODI?He is now 33 years old and will not be able to play 2015wc.His place should be given to a younger spinner like Sachithra Serasinghe. Why they have left out Suraj Randiv. His bowling figures in last 2 ODIs are 42/5(10),44/2(8.1)and last odi inning is 41(50) against AUS.And he can gain the benefit of bouncy pitches. Here some have commented against Kapu. But the thing they have forgotis that he was always number 6 or 7 of batting line up and never got a chance play without pressure.Samething is now happening to Mathews. After sometime selectors would probably say that his Average in last .. matches is low and will axe him.Is that what should happen?Youngest like Mathews,Chandimal and Kapu should be given the chance to play at3,4,5 places and Sanga and Mahela should go down the order.Having Sanga,Mahela still to come would let those youngesters to play without pressure. And also Thisara should be given the PP.

  • KirkSmith on January 4, 2012, 12:25 GMT

Guys Jeevan Mendis is injured... He has fractured his finger... That's why he wasn't selected... Hope he recovers fast... And all the best for our team... and CRICINFO, put correct information...!!!

  • stormy16 on January 4, 2012, 10:14 GMT

I am not sure about Ajantha Mendis - I would have settled for Jeevan who offers something different and can bat. Ajantha will not get pitches to causeissues I would imagine. Also what about the crop of young fast bowlers - Lakmal, Eranga and Pradeep. Guys like Dilhara and Nuwan have been around for a long time but cant recall them winning a game for SL for a very long time. I am also not certain about Tirimana's one day abilities.

  • Lankanforever on January 4, 2012, 7:35 GMT

Nice to see people talk about Kapu and Maha. I believe it's time we go for these two again because they are still young and has esxperience. it's time for selectors to think about Sachithra Senanayake (Bowl Avg 18+, Bat Avg 19+) and Bhanuka. May be at least in the next tour. And surely change the bating coach. He is changing the players to the worse I guess. You will see my point if you look at Mathews before marvan and now. Also Kapu had problems when he was forced to be too defensive in the last few maches he played. Didn't see the natural shots of both for along time. I's time the coach let them play their natural game while do something about their weak points. my 15 for the next tour

    1)Dilshan2)Upul3)Chandi4)Kumar5)Kapu6)Mahela7)mathews8)Lasith9)Kula10)Mendis11)Sachihra12)Bhanuka13)Thisara14)Nuwan Pradeep/Shaminda Eranga15)Farvez Maharoof

  • KaZsa on January 4, 2012, 7:21 GMT

Why is Jeevan left out?:O:O.He is a great asset for SL.He is a very good all rounder who can bowl decent leggies and looked a very good middle order batter. If he is wasted like this we will loose a very valuable leg spinning all rounder.

  • WaldermaltCricketer on January 4, 2012, 7:10 GMT

@Aruna Liyanage.. What are the points U considered to say that Kapugedara should play at No:5?????? Chamara Kapugedara is one of the WORST batsmen in SL who has been given more than enough chances & misused 99% of those. Even Nuwan Kulasekara is a far better batsman than WEAK Kapugedara. While saying you love cricket & you asking Kapugedara to be included to final 11. I can't understand What kind of a cricket lover U are.....

  • on January 4, 2012, 1:49 GMT

They should be place for maharoof, kapugedara, samaraweera and banuka , also suraj Randiv..shaminda eranga is not fit? Mahela can open rest of he's carrier, kapu or samaraweera can play no.5 .. thats the way... we love cricket...PLzzz

  • Ian316 on January 3, 2012, 23:12 GMT

I don't believe I'm still hearing some names such as Kapugedera and Maharoof!!! When was the last time either of these guys won anything for SL? Or at least played a substantial role in a victory??? Yes, the squad could be different but no more chances for the likes of Maha, Kapu or the worst culprit of all..... chamara Silva!!!! They were given ample opportunity and wasted each in style!!!

  • on January 3, 2012, 22:30 GMT

    Sri Lanka team should be...

Tharanga Jayawardne Sangakara(Wkt) Dilshan(c) Chandimal Matthews Perera/j Mendis Maharoof Randiv Malinga Mendis

  • on January 3, 2012, 21:51 GMT

I would play a bowler over many allrounders.

  • on January 3, 2012, 20:00 GMT

can't wait to see Malinga in action in the SA pitches

  • on January 3, 2012, 19:20 GMT

i really do not understand why they do not include samarweera.

He is the only one who can stay there and bat. Others useless , they cannot bat in tough situations. guess we are always in tough conditions all the time in test or one day.

Our slectors should not think like australian or england selectors.

Maharoof should have given a go since he had good Premier league

  • dil333 on January 3, 2012, 14:09 GMT

Why is Tharanga in the squad? He's shown throughout the past few years he has serious issues with the ball outside off stump, and fails to get to get quick singles to rotate the strike early on. He pounds poor bowling attacks though, such as Canada and Zimbabwe since they dont have the skill to bowl to his weak area which is why his stats don't reflect his poor performance. He sucks momentum from the top order and leave us prone to collapses.

Perhaps Chandimal can open with Dilshan, anything but a free wicket for the opposition.

  • on January 3, 2012, 14:03 GMT

Wer is the middle order. There are 4 batsmen who can play as an opner namly Dilly,Tharanga,Mahela & Chandimal.Hence the selectors might have selected inform Kandamby or Kapugedara instead of Lahiru Thirimanne.Since Dilhara is injurd ,better to give another go for Farveez Maharoof who was outstanding in the recently concluded domestic ODI series.I am not condering Rangana Hearath as a ODI material.Since the south African piches are more bouncy,Suraj Randiv should have benn choosen ahead of him.Happy to see mahela as a openner in both ODIs & 20-20s till the next 20-20 world cup.My first elevn is 1Mahela 2Dilly 3Tharanga 4.Sanga 5.Chandi 6.Mathews 7.Thisara 8.Nuwan Kule 9.Prasad 10.Malainga 11.Ajantha
