Sangakkara, SLC end dispute

Kumar Sangakkara will not be officially reprimanded by Sri Lanka Cricket after his public spat with the board. According to a statement from SLC, the parties had met and resolved their differences amicably.

Sangakkara and SLC had sparred via the media and over email in the past week, after SLC asked Sangakkara to play for the Kandurata Maroons team in the Champions League T20, instead of his IPL franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sangakkara's eventual decision to represent Kandurata at the tournament will cost him US$140,000, and the manner in which the issue was played out publicly created bad blood between him and the Sri Lankan board.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that on an initiative of its president Mr. Jayantha Dharmadasa, Kumar Sangakkara met with the executive committee of SLC and had an open discussion today. All the differences and misunderstandings were resolved very cordially," the statement said.

After choosing to play for Kandurata, Sangakkara had alleged that the board deliberately misrepresented his situation, and put his loyalty to the country in doubt among the public. The board, represented through Dharmadasa, denied these claims.

Sangakkara will begin training with the Kandurata side in the coming weeks. Their first match in the Champions League qualifiers is against Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 17.

Rohini, Just because it says democratic in your passport and we have voting system doesn't mean it's a democracy. Wake up!!

@pyramidsoul well said! That should be the email. May be you hacked their email. Sangakkara selected Kandurata Warriors just because he was questioned about his loyalty to his country. Well done Nishantha Ranathunge! Anyway ending dispute is great. But SLC has changed their status from "choose loyalty" to "must play for Kandurata" which worries us!

There are two things in any job or profession. One, some shine in the profession or the job purely because of the profession or the job. some other shine in the job or prfession and by themselves shine the job or profession. Here the job or profession shines because of the person who occupies that job or profession. I believe Sangakkara belong to the second type, because of him his profession shines and not vice versa,

    Here is the letter.....

    Kumar Sangakkara's e-mail to Nishantha Ranatunga (29/08/2013) August 31, 2013, 7:16 pm

    Dear Nishantha,

I too as a player have for over 13 years now given my all for Sri Lanka Cricket both on and off the field. As a professional player I have done my best to perform at the highest level consistently on the field and to carry myself as a role model and ambassador for the country off it. I do not have the luxury of standing for election, but have to prove my worth to selectors day in and day out in order to retain my place in the team and safeguard my job and livelihood.

I hail Sanga as a Great Crickerter and the way he conducts him self as a person. He also should not get involved in running SLC and his responsibility is playing cricket and not to interfere in board matters. If he messes with the board all players will dictate terms and the borad will have to play according to what players say.Look at Malinga,Sanga,Mahela,Dilshan they always have put IPL before the country so of course money has been the priority how much you say its not.You do not set an expample to others who will also dictate soon like the players contract.I think Sanga was wise to play for Kandurata as his services for Sunrises were not beneficial ansd was benched many times.

Not idea why cricketers have to go through this. Why "Loyalty to country" has anything to do with playing cricket. Same was heard about Gayle and Malinga... its pathetic how the cricket boards keep projecting cricketers this way.... sad

Well done. Hope the SLC has got players' total commitment to the full tour of UK next year. Last time around the SLC was made to look daft with the players not being available for pre tour practice matches at home & arriving in UK in a staggered manner. SL have never won a Test series in UK & hopefully the players (& others) make it a reality this time. The SLC should aim to squeeze in two warm up games (3 +2 day) in between. Ranil Herath - Kent
