The first-class game in the West Indies is set to welcome radical innovations such as day-night matches and the use of pink balls to boost spectator interest. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will trial these innovations in its four-day tournament, which gets underway on January 8. Another feature is the hosting of an entire round in one territory to ease the logistical challenges in travelling arrangements.
"Spectator interest in regional matches has been declining in recent years and we are looking at different ways to organise our tournaments and ensure greater value for all our stakeholders, including players and spectators," Ernest Hilaire, the WICB's CEO, said.
"We at the WICB aim to bring the game back to the fans and we believe the new format of having day-night cricket in the four-day tournament will help to generate public interest and also be a winner with the players and officials."
Hilaire added that each of the seven teams will get to play at least one match under lights. He said data will be collected on the impact on players, spectators, match officials and spectators before the format comes under review.
"We will also be looking to utilise some of the wonderful facilities we have in the region as we seek to develop players who will be able to represent the people of the Caribbean at the highest level," Hilaire said.
The first round will begin in Jamaica from January 8-11 while the final round will be played at Windwards between February 26 and March 1.

All this crap about NIGHT games and PINK ball is all a waste of time in order to get people to come to the games. Fact is people in the Caribbean are not interested in the Cricket because the game has been taken away from them. The kids in the region are not taking to the game because they do not know it. They are more exposed to North American sports. The big question is Why? I can tell you Why. Three words..... Radio and Television. Imagine this, I live in North America, I was home the other day when there was a regional match playing at Sabina Park. Imagine this, my excitement that I was going to listen to the game on the radio. Wrong. I was up and down that dial trying to find some commentry but to no avail. When I was a boy growing up in Jamaica in the 70"s and 80"s there were two am radio stations and we have ball by ball commentry on all games all day. Today there are more than 20 and the games are on none. That is where the problem lies. Radio and television.
Posted by EdwardAlf on (December 17 2009, 04:52 AM GMT)Well.. Im a big fan of westindies.... and any sort of innovation which gets the cricket back on its feet in the Caribbean will do wonders for Windies cricket.... And i wish them all the best for their current series against Aussies.....
Posted by gottalovetheraindance on (December 16 2009, 10:03 AM GMT)i think this is actually a good idea. people coming from work or school can jus drop by and take in a good game of cricket. what WICB needs to look at now is the quality of the pitches. if we have all our players fit and the pitches are result orientated then next year we may have an interesting series with South Africa. check out this squad Gayle, Bharat, Sarwan, Chanderaul, Samuels, Nash, Bravo, Dowlin/ Simmons/Bravo, Ramdin, Taylor, Edwards, Roach, Tonge/ Rampaul/Sammy, MIller/ Benn.
