The West Indies cricket board is preparing to launch its franchise-based Twenty20 league in 2013 and they have finalised an agreement with Verus International, a Barbados-based merchant bank, for funding the competition.
The league is likely to comprise six Caribbean city-based franchises with the majority of players from the West Indies.
As part of the arrangement, the WICB will receive annual funding for additional retainer contracts for players. The board currently funds 20 annual retainer contracts.
"A significant number of players at the regional level will benefit through greater financial stability both from playing in the league and from year-round retainer contracts while having an international platform on which to showcase their skills and talent," Dr Julian Hunte, the WICB president, said.
"Most importantly, the league will bring a huge financial injection into the Caribbean and create significant job opportunities across the region in a wide cross section of sectors."
Ernest Hilaire, the former chief executive of the WICB, had initially revealed that a "commercial Twenty20" league in the Caribbean was in the works in September. Last month, Hilaire's successor, Michael Muirhead, said negotiations for staging the inaugural Caribbean Premier League were on track and that "might mean that the regional T20 cricket tournament might have to be done away with".

ok...
there are currently 6 regional teams ?
So why are there only 6 City Franchises ?
this means that Countries that have glut of exceptional players , will have their fringe players make other teams .....
so we may have 6 bajan fast bowlers on display and maybe 5 Trini spinners ,,,,
which is a good thing as it will mean a MUCH stronger league ....
Right now, the 12th Men form T&T and Jamaica , are hard done by the fact that mediocre players can play 1st class cricket for Windwards.... and end up on the WI Test team, while some far better players are languishing on the sidelines in T&T , Jamaica and Barbados ...
Posted by splites on (December 15, 2012, 0:56 GMT)Great to see a pro T20 tournament in the WI. However the WICB needs to shift this balance to the 4-day and Super50 and professionalise the game in the Caribbean. Another good idea would be to have a semi-pro caribbean club T20 tournament with the top clubs in the respective territories with the Champions League format. I still want to see Empire vs. Queens park cricket club.
Posted byGreat idea Niraj, and good idea Sawifan and Gorky, though i know many purist may complain and talk expanding to the US is the logical move, much bigger market both for viewers and merchandising. Think of the millions of expats not only from the Windies, but think of those from the subcontinent who want some of the action nearer to home. i see it as an outlet for the dozens of players who will get the chance to get paid for playing cricket and imagine this could be a viable option for youngsters to emulate. Lets see how it goes, but i am enthusiastic about this !!!
Posted byAnother dull hit & giggle tournament!! As long as it inspires young West Indians into playing cricket to then aspire to play at the very top level (ie in the West Indian TEST Team) then it will have its uses.
Posted by@Nirajm that's a great idea. I hope the officials take note...and all the best to the new carribean league...
Posted by sawifan on (December 14, 2012, 13:04 GMT)@Niraj... i think that would be a great way to get the USA more involved. Having a team based in Florida (probably Fort Lauderdale), would be a boon for the sport in the US and would bring much needed money to the region. Plenty of Caribbean ex-pats could get their chance to shine too!
Posted byMay be a good idea getting a couple of teams from US in.
Posted byHopefully it goes better than their last effort.
Posted byWe don't need over seas players......our boys are better
Posted byWouldn't have a big overseas fan-following, because the subcontinent has a 12 hour time difference.
Posted by electric_loco_WAP4 on (December 14, 2012, 5:41 GMT)The new sensation in franchise cricket is going to put IPL to shame ....and make it an ordinary club league. Welcome to the king of T20 leagues!!... the CarribeanT20!!
Posted byNot really interested in seeing foreigners. WI has a unique set up where even below international level, national pride still exist in the regional tournament.
Posted by LifeWithBoundaries on (December 14, 2012, 4:31 GMT)Just about time! I think so!
Posted byObviously the CT20 will offer the CL entance..atleast this year....but I wonder what will happen next year???? Can't see 2 t20 tornaments happening evry yr....which means a club an maybe no longer a country, will rep the WI rep at the CL in 2014
Posted bySlow in coming. Should have capitalized on the Stanford momentum. Should have been ahead of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for sure. Must place a heavy reliance on TV revenues.
Posted by Robster1 on (December 14, 2012, 1:40 GMT)Kingston, Bridgetown, Port of Spain, Georgetown and the two other might be ....?
Posted byGood - ensure the financial stability of the franchises, and we may have some room for development, especially if the franchises are allowed to grow beyond T20 and allow First Class games and women and age-group teams, too...
Posted byThis will be great for the fans and for West Indies Cricket. I look forward to our players competing with the best in this genre of the game.
Posted byGlad to see the business community being involved but apart from Verus, which other businesses or businesspeople are involved, each franchise should be a business on its own. I only hope that the this is not the same local cricket boards calling themselves franchises
Posted byPresumbly the six citiess will be Bridgetown, Kingston, Georgetown, Port-of-Spain, ST JOhns (Antigua) and Arnos Vale and St Lucia. ARe there any more ?
Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (December 13, 2012, 18:53 GMT)This is a pleasant news. Now they can be at more equal terms with the rest of the world. It never made sense to see Trinidad and Tobago play against a Mumbai XI or Sydney XI because the latter are both cities. So now we can have a Kingston XI or Port of Spain XI instead. I am sure a lot of county players from England will feature in this competition. Anyway, it's good to hear about another T20 league blossoming. God bless T20 cricket !
Posted by Hattrick_Capes on (December 13, 2012, 18:33 GMT)Why, West Indies, why? Don't you recognise the unique appeal your tournament had?
Posted by sameeratharanga on (December 13, 2012, 18:08 GMT)love to watch sri lankan players playing in this league..
