Pakistan and New Zealand fight to stay alive

119

Match Facts

Saturday, May 8, Bridgetown
Start time 0930 (1330 GMT)

The Big Picture

Both New Zealand and Pakistan were out-played in their opening Super Eight games and the loser of this match will almost certainly be heading for the exit. Pakistan, the defending champions, have the most reasons to worry after an unconvincing opening week in which they lost twice and only managed to beat Bangladesh.

They began the Super Eights with a six-wicket defeat by England after their batsmen posted 147. Two losses in a row would weigh down most teams but with Pakistan there is always the chance of a magical follow-up. Their first goal is to fix some sloppy fielding - five catches were dropped against England - and then to find a batsman who can blast a rapid half-century to take them to a score of 170-plus.

New Zealand started the tournament with two wins to top their group, but life became harder against South Africa and their chase fell 13 runs short. Their bowling is a problem and Daniel Vettori wants it fixed.

"We have to improve on that pretty quickly, going into two must-win games now," he said. Teams cannot afford back-to-back slip-ups at this stage and this match will help determine whether New Zealand reach their almost traditional semi-final spot at a major tournament.

Watch out for...

It's been a quiet event for Brendon McCullum, who in his prime could claim to be the game's most destructive hitter. McCullum has not even managed a six in the first three matches while registering 0, 22 not out and 6. He is such a crucial man for New Zealand that the mini-slump must end if the team is to progress any further.

Umar Akmal has made some bright contributions in his two chances and will look to provide sustained punch on Saturday. Akmal, who has batted at No.4 in the past two games, picked up 30 off 25 balls against England to follow his 18 from 14 against Australia. If he gets a long stay he will be brutal.

Team news

With Vettori's problems with the bowling, New Zealand may consider bringing in Kyle Mills for Tim Southee. Southee was taken for three sixes in an over by Albie Morkel as his 120-125kph medium pacers went for 39 in three overs. While Southee's yorkers are usually valuable at the end of the innings, the side might prefer the extra experience of Mills. The coach Mark Greatbatch said they would consider one or two changes.

New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Shane Bond.

Pakistan have Mohammad Sami in the squad if they want to re-jig their fast-bowling attack again. Mohammad Asif came in against England and went for 43 off fours overs, having replaced Sami. Some effective support for Mohammad Aamer would be extremely useful.

Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shahid Afridi (capt), 6 Misbah-ul-Haq, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Fawad Alam, 9 Mohammad Aamer, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Asif.

Pitch and conditions

Faster bowlers have had some encouragement at Kensington Oval so look for a crucial battle between Shane Bond and Mohammad Aamer. "It's certainly not a quick wicket, it's still suited to us," Vettori said. Still, the surface is a lot sprightlier than the ones they encountered in Guyana. The forecast for Saturday is scattered showers and a top of 31C.

Stats and trivia

  • New Zealand have played Pakistan four times in Twenty20s and never beaten them. The closest they came was a seven-run defeat in Dubai in November
  • Salman Butt is Pakistan's leading run-scorer in the event with 122 while New Zealand's best is Jesse Ryder with 77
  • Jacob Oram and Nathan McCullum have tournament strike-rates in the 180s after some short but brutal displays

    Quotes

"It's the nature of the format that your four overs can be brilliant one day and pretty tough the next and we are hoping for a quick turnaround from some of the guys' performances."
Daniel Vettori calls for an improved bowling effort

"We missed our opportunities [against England] and you can't afford to miss opportunities. We are working hard but right now I don't know why we are missing opportunities."

I'm a sri lankan and i really want Pakistan to be in semis with sri lanka. GOOD LUCK Pakistan. Hope u guys can win this.

  • on May 8, 2010, 13:24 GMT

i think pakistan has still the chance to go ahead, playing mohammah asif is a wise decision caz although asif is not htat quick as sami still he has got pricision he can bowl accoding to the field set , second thin is that caption should open the bowling with his best bowlers ''fast bowlers asif and amir '' abdul razal will be a better option, during the power play the caption should try to contain the newzelad batsman, at least singles should be restricted. in bating abdul razak should come out a bit earlier his presense on the pitch can do alot as he can accelerate any time he wants . one thing to be kept in mind bowling should be according to the field set

half an hour to go , cant wait. i have a feeling Pakistan is on a serious decline. same as with west indies. our batting except umar and butt is club level, bowling we have only amir and ajmal. Lets accept we aint the force we once were. Stop blaming pcb or afridi. As much as I would like a pak win., i cant see that happening, certainly not against the saffers(even if somehow we do win this one).

Either send fawad alam early or show him the door. We are really missing Gul.

  • Kazim-Altaf on May 8, 2010, 12:45 GMT

I fully agree to the comments on captainship. Players are not showing playing as a team but the individuals. I'm sorry but this attitude can't help win against good teams

  • on May 8, 2010, 12:39 GMT

Afridi is saying "We missed our opportunities [against England] and you can't afford to miss opportunities. We are working hard but right now I don't know why we are missing opportunities." Even a six year will be able to tell why Pakistan is missing oppourtunities, simple there fielding is the school kids playing on international level. Batting is more worse then the club level and only Aamer and Ajmal are the only bowlers who are a bit better, the ithers are just crap.

I think that if Pakistan lost the match today than there will be no chance for them to go in the semifinals because if new zealand wins today they will be 2 points up and when the new zealand or england either wins the match between both of them one of them will be having a 2 match win...and south africa if win the match from any of england or pakistan they will also be having a 2 match win so it is the need of the time that the Pakistan must win the both of the matches against new zealand and South Africa in order to go for the semi finals. According to me this time the balance of the pakistani team is not so good and they are missing umar gul a lot here and also they are facing problems due to their fielding. According to me today shahid must use abdul razzak up the order and use ajmal and aamir with a wise move... today ajmal could be used as a attacker because I have seen that it is difficult to hit ajmal out of the park either in the early overs or the late overs

  • on May 8, 2010, 12:24 GMT

well its a tough battle between the two.... so far in the tournament, kiwis have performed better than pakistan and with players like J.Ryder and McCullum they have enough to send back pakistan but the match will be interesting

  • Fahad.Iqbal on May 8, 2010, 12:16 GMT

All what PAK needs to win this game is Game Spirit and great Enthusiasm. They must show it in the field, dominate over NZ. As we all know from past that Pak has beaten up NZ in big tournaments, 1992 World Cup, 1999 World Cup, T20 WC 2007, T20 WC 2009. PASSION AND DETERMINATION with more FOCUS... InshaAllah Pakistan will WIN...

  • zulfi43 on May 8, 2010, 12:09 GMT

Inshallah pakistan will win this match, if they improve there feilding skill and replace fwad alam with abdul rehman.

Most of the posts seem to have been about Pakistan but I'm going to predict that New Zealand win - and possibly win quite comfortably. It's not that they are a manifestly better side, in fact both teams recent form has been similar. But their fielding is way better and they generally operate better as a team. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is with Pakistan but something appears fundamentally wrong with their team unity, temperament and cohesion. They have flashes of individual brilliance but lack consistency. I know New Zealand can be guilty of that sometimes but nowhere near as bad as Pakistan. Ultimately inconsistent teams very rarely win tournaments such as these. The question for me is - which of these teams, if they win today, is more likely to have a chance of going on and winning the tournament? I'd have to say New Zealand.

  • on May 8, 2010, 11:41 GMT

pakistan need to work hard in that match and improve thier fielding and middle order batting if they do that thing theywill won the world cup............. again. pray for TEAM PAKISTAN.

  • 1Superman1 on May 8, 2010, 11:40 GMT

in this shahid afridi shuld become more wise, coz in the last match he was not using his bowlers well.he should continue with a bowler who is picking up wikets for him or restricting other team as far as runs are concerned.and best of luck pakistan

  • on May 8, 2010, 11:37 GMT

Pakistan will win this today and against south africa tooo

  • khurrum.haidery on May 8, 2010, 11:36 GMT

When i see the history of Pakistan team, they have won the majority of their matches due to their Bowling, very few due to their batting and lost every match due to poor fielding. No doubt, Pakistan is in humble need of some new batsmen in team. In my opinion, Muhammad Hafiz (he is not int'l player) and Fawad Alam (political player) should be dropped and Khalid Lateef + Hammad Azam should be given a chance. Muhammad Asif or Muhammad Sami...............depends on pitch conditions but anyway Muhammad Aamir should be saved for last 10 overs.

  • on May 8, 2010, 11:35 GMT

I hope NZ maintain their proud record of reaching at least the semis even if it means at the expense of the defending champs. Go NZ Go, punch above your weight and that SF slot is not far away.

  • on May 8, 2010, 11:25 GMT

I am totally unhappy way the Shahid Afridi using his bowlers and batsmen, He should add Sami in place of Fawad Alam and let Razaq come in no. 3rd. Shahid Afridi should keep 3 overs of Ammir & 4 overs of Ajmal after ten. They two can stop hitting and both are the wicket taker. I hope Shahid Afridi and his men will come stronger today and they will come back in WC as they came back in 2009 WC after loosing first match against SL in 2nd round. My all best wishes and prayers with PAK team

  • meem.alif.suad on May 8, 2010, 11:09 GMT

    Hello All,

PK Tigers are wounded badly by Kangroos and Thn English players and now i am damm sure all the revanges of last two defeats will be taken from NZ.

As NZ has a trumendous records of defeats in WC against PK , I hope they wont be urging to change the tradition.

But PK is famous for un certainities, when all the world are betting on thier Truimph they can let all the world down and when there is no hope of their victory they can beat any of the world best side.

So the match is still on and NZ can win the match to suvive but they need some extra ordinary slaughtring from Mc Cullum or Oram , where as Styris also had a good record against PK so he can also be useful, I personaly feel PK batsmen will not be comfertable agaisnt Kyle Mills so NZ should include him in th side for todays match.

From PK Point of View Fawad Alam Should be replaced by an Orthodox Left Arm Spinner i.e Abdul Rehman and instead of Butt Hafeez And Kami Akku Should Open The Innings......

  • on May 8, 2010, 11:00 GMT

Its a Do or Die situation for both teams. So, a tough match is expected. Although NZ performance is better than PAK in this tournamnet as they won both matches in first round. But Pakistanis always like to give a surprise come back by winning very crucial matches against big teams. Hopefully, they are going to do the same again today. They also have a very good record against NZ. Rehman and Sami will be a good replacement for Fawad and Asif. Best of Luck for Pakistan. If they win today, they can win the T20 WorldCup again.

  • on May 8, 2010, 10:57 GMT

Pak has energy but shud be utilized smartly

  • on May 8, 2010, 10:55 GMT

I m disappointed with the captainship in last two matches which causes lost shud improve that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • on May 8, 2010, 10:21 GMT

its a match where the one who plays worse will lose! they are a bunch of underachievers!

  • redmen on May 8, 2010, 10:17 GMT

i think we need to open with afridi thats where we can win the game if he gets in for the first 6 powerplays overs

  • on May 8, 2010, 9:58 GMT

I don't understand why Mohmmad Hafiz is still in the squad. He has done nothing in all three matches. I think he should be replaced. Though Fawwad Alam couldn't do something special with his bat or ball but still he is a good fielder and Pakistan really needs good fielders. Asif should play this game. Asif has done pakistan great jobs in past matches so pakistan just can't drop him on basis of one match. I hope he would do something good in this match.

  • on May 8, 2010, 9:56 GMT

As it is said "CAtches win matches" so by dropping 5 catches u cant win the match. never ever thnk to win. team is fi9 no change is required but the unity is compulsory fawad alam is successful player ,he shown in ausis tour. only missing shoib malik here and gul.

  • on May 8, 2010, 9:55 GMT

Im a big Fawad Alam fan he played well against Australia. He gets under utilized, he bats to low down the order and is never asked to bowl! If anyone should be dropped i reckon it should be Mohammed Hafeez. His bowling has been expensive! Neither has his batting been anything worthwhile to write home about. I say push Alam up the order and bring in Pakistan's u-19 gunslinger to show why he was selected for this world cup!!!

  • Humraz on May 8, 2010, 9:50 GMT

Mohsin Raza, Karachi. There should be some changes in the final eleven, we need Khalid Latif in replace of Mohammad Hafiz, and because of long betting order Fawad Alam can not be adjusted in the final squad he should be replaced with Abdul Rehman for a leg break option which is very much needed now, Asif should be replaced with Mohammad Sami for some quick deliveries. Betting order also need to be change Khalid Lateef should open the innings with Salman But, and Umer Akmal or Razzaq should come one down because these two players can be effective if they have maximum overs to bat, Misbah should come lower down the order because he is not in good touch and as he got the reputation to not finish the game for his team, he loose the confidence as well.

  • JMalik on May 8, 2010, 9:50 GMT

Today's match is do or die. Trust youngsters They always contribute with their commitment & dedication. Team management must try Hammad Aazam & Abdul Rehman in place of M. Asif & Fawad Aalam. In addition, Misbah should be advised to stick to the basic shots & do not improvize in case team needs score eg: match against Enland our team required score & he was out on a cheap shot......Chiep shot bcoz at that time score was required. I think the management should plan strategy on the following guide lines: Bowlers....Go for wickets & if gets hitting then immediately change to line & lenght in order to minimize scoring. Fielders......Place yourslf at a place & don't wait for the ball to come to you rather go for the ball in order to save singles & make an attemt to run out the opponents & hold catches which requires their focus on the game. Batsmen.......Please use your footwork in order to come in the line to play strokes & always try to play shots on the merit of the ball. GIVE YOUR 100%.

  • cxiv on May 8, 2010, 9:45 GMT

Batting Order: 1. Salman Butt, 2. Muhammad Hafeez, 3. Fawad Alim, 4. Umer Akmal, 5. Kamran Akmal, 6. Shahid Afridi, 7. Abdul Razzaq, 8. Misbah Ul Haq, 9. Hammad Azam/Abdul Rehman, 10. Muhammad Aamir, 11. Saeed Ajmal.

  • TonyRai on May 8, 2010, 9:38 GMT

Pak just need to rearrange the batting order. fawad cant hit at the end, hafeez can, so why dont we cange their positions?

  • jaanaj300 on May 8, 2010, 9:30 GMT

Asif and Sami they must share with Hamad Azam and abdur

  • on May 8, 2010, 9:27 GMT

fawad alam is a mess, too weak to hit the ball in the end of the innings.khalid latif should be in the team,he can also hit ball hard.

  • on May 8, 2010, 9:24 GMT

In my opinion Afridi can not lift the burden of regular captaincy. He was very enthusiastic in the field when Younus was captain and he was his deputy. But we dont see that attitude of Him anymore. Moreover, He is neither performing with the bat nor with ball in this cup. Probably all due to the pressure of captaincy. And Pakistani board is talking about giving him regular captaincy in test and ODIs also. That will be fatal both for Afridi and Pakistan cricket. They should bring back the 'always-smiling' Younus to tests and ODIs. And so far as today match Fawad must be replaced by Hammad and Hafeez by Khalid. Although Khalid is not as better as Imran Nazir or Imran Farhat, who are not in the squad, but He will deliver better than Hafeez. Best of LUCK for today. And if Pakistan won today, then 'scene on hai', and Pakistan will reach the finals. Peace and Pray

INSHALLAH PAKISTAN WILL WIN TODAY... As stats show that many times before v have beaten NZ in crucial matches of World Cup...I remeber the match ov previous WC T20 like yesterday...main hero was umar gul there but v dont have him now....role to b played is same , need a bowler ov same calliber...,yep v have him-M.Aamer...He's the man...while other go at 10 r.p.o he contains the score ...he will have to click today.. we hav chances....we can win only if we want to...Afridi now shud use some mind....he shud b flexible as a captain enough to alter the game plan acc to the situation...Hafeeez is a part time bowler - for God Sake he's not Murli or Harbhajan to complete his 4 overs any case...use bowlers sensibly and forget last WC ...its over now ...come out of arrogance....think and survive today- otherwise no one will honour u fr the last one but will curse u for the current one.... PAKISTAN TEAM may u win...ALLAH may b with u ppl...our prayers with u and really we want u to win ....

I think Fawad should play at No 6, Misbah at 5 and Afridi at 8 (Fawad's spot). After all, even the wonderful NZ allrounder Daneil Vettori plays at No 8 position plus the fact that Afridi is more of a bowling allrounder than a batting allrounder. Fawad, on the other hand, is more of a batting allrounder and would fit better at 6. Vettori can be devastating with the bat at 8 and so could Afridi. He (Afridi) could always switch to a slow captain's innings if the situation required and try to induce some calm among the tailenders. Fawad should definitely be tried with the ball as he is an allrounder just like Shoaib Malik (when in the team). Razak and Fawad must be tried for bowling when other bowlers go for plenty of runs - you never know who may work on that day, unless you tried them!

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:59 GMT

Brendon McCullum is a destructive batsmen when he finds his form Bridgetown is not big enough. I will say New Zealand will win their fielding is very good

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:59 GMT

INSHALLAH Pakistan will win today if afridi razzaq misbah and akmal will play well so how can lose pakitan today ....... best of luck pakistanies

Pakistan v/s New Zealand. Do or die match for both of the teams. Historically Pakistan have done well against NZ in the World Cups.

World Cup 1992- Pakistan beat NZ in the semi final. World Cup 1999- Pakistan beat NZ in the semi final. T20 World Cup 2007- Pakistan beat NZ in the semi final by 6 wickets. T20 World Cup 2009-Pakistan beat NZ by 6 wickets in 13 overs. Pakistan and NZ have played 4 T20Is. Pak have won all four of them. NZ has been a case of revival for Pakistan and that too in crucial matches. Today it is going to be the same.

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:46 GMT

add shoaib akhtar bcoz he have the pace and can bowl a yorker and also take out fawad alam bcoz he is useless in the team. i m requesting u to do what i m saying it will make pakistan to qlfy for the finals i want this pakistan team 2 play the next matches razzaq, misbah, aamir, asif, rehman, afridi, umar, butt, kamran, akhtar and hafeez

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:38 GMT

I think Pakistan need to make some changes in their side. They must replace Fawad Alam with the Abdul Rahman as Kiwis are historically weak against spinners. Furthermore, the performance of the left arm spinners in this tournament has been very good. Pakistani batting order should be as, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal, Muhammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Misbah ul Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afrid, Muhammad Amir, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rahman, Muhammad Asif

  • lazyleopard on May 8, 2010, 8:34 GMT

Why is Hamad Azam in the squad if he is never going to make the team! Fawad Alam is not useful coming in as late as he is ... lets try the rookie

  • fahaddd on May 8, 2010, 8:33 GMT

I THINK PAKISTAN WILL WIN TODAY IF THEY MAKE SOME CHANGES>LIKE BRINGING hammad azam and rehman IN PLACE OF ASIF AND FAWAD.................

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:17 GMT

Its so disappointed they way defending champion played so far, I am sure INSHALLAH they will do good against NZ, Fawad certainly a weakest link in team, does not suit 20/20 format. Hope PAK will give me chance to wear Pakistani shirt with proud although chances looking slim......but as we all knows PAK familiar surprises when they are down & out.

  • on May 8, 2010, 8:13 GMT

pakistan can do better they need to improve their fielding and bowling too fawad should be replaced by sami or rehman its a must win game so sami wud be the better option

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:58 GMT

As there is no need of FaWad Alam in this line.. bats at no.8 when hitting is required, doesnt even contribe to the bowling.., just does the fielding, and that too, he dropped Keiterson's catch, had he been on boundary line. that would have been taken. I think HAMMAD AZAM should be given a chance, is a handy medium pace bowler, he will be new to the oppenents, and he could make life difficult for the other team., he des know hitting, does undestand the game well. I think he must e given a chance. If Afridi and coach thinks, that he is too young to play, then y the hell you brought him here on tour. youcould have brought Shoaib Akhtar or any other xperience.. now when you have him here, then TRY him..atleast h wll play for is country, not for himself And i think Afridi should use his brain, and learn captaincy, somebody just tell him, lease When u have seen , muhammad hafeez been punished while bowling, y the hell you give him bowling, and keep razzaq away.. Please PAKISTAN TEAM. we luvu

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:56 GMT

    Pakistan need to make few changes to the bating order.. my bating order wud be. 1 K Akmal,,2 S Butt,,3 A Razzaq,,4 U Akmal,,5 Khalid,,6 Missbah,,7 Afridii,,8 M Aamir,,9 M Sami,,,10 Rehman,,,11 Ajmal..Inshah Allah Pak Will Win..Gud Luck Guys...:)

  • Abaa on May 8, 2010, 7:46 GMT

New Zealand always somehow end up being the punching bags for Pakistan in big tournaments ... Let's see what happens this time :-( I really can't help but feel for these guys

Traditionally Kiwi players can't play spin that well. The players who can tackle spin well in kiwi camp is McCullum and styris only. So new zealand must think of sending styris up the order. McCullum is a player who enjoys playing on fast tracks like Australia and South Africa. He is struggling on there slow and low tracks. On the other hand only the openers and looking in some form for pakistan. Afridi's lack of form really hurting pakistan. But he is a big match player. Watch out for him

  • murihikukid on May 8, 2010, 7:40 GMT

As long as McCullum does not play as wicketkeeper NZ are a batsman down ...He should take responsibility with the gloves which would allow Redmond to open with him while the others move down the order..Unfortunately Hopkins misses out but he is inferior to McCullum with the gloves and inferior to Redmond as a batsman so the answer is easy...If McCullum will not play as wicketkeeper ? Dont pick him..MurihikuKid

It is shameful that Pakistan is not giving a chance to Abdul rehman, the best left arm spin bowler in pakistan. he is very very experienced T20 bowler. Shahid afridi is worried about last 6-8 overs of an inning and he wants to hold Ajmal overs to stop opposition from scoring heavily. This formula didnt worked and will not work even in future. It is must to have abdul rehman in our bowling lineup so that we can attack opposition upfront. I am 100% sure that if Abdul rehman would have played last two games, Pakistan would have won easily.

It is still not over for Pakistan and for god sake someone call or text Shahid afridi and tell him to play Abdul rehman in next all games. There is no need of sami or asif on these wickets. Aamir, razzak, ajmal, Abdul rehman, Shahid afridi should bowl there quota of 4 overs. Batting line up Kamran, Salman, Umar, Razzak, Misbah,Shahid, Fawad,Hafeez (you can float hafeez and fawad up the order as per situation).

FOR GOD SAKE GIVE CHANCE TO ABDUL REHMA

  • pakzrocks on May 8, 2010, 7:31 GMT

Pakistan management has announced two changes for todays match. Fawad Alam will be replaced by left arm spinner Abdul Rehman and Asif will make way for Sami. I hope Men in Green wins today ..

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:30 GMT

Pakistan Should drop Fawad Alam and HAMMAD Azam should play instead, he was best inf under 19, good striker, clean hitter, HAfeex should not ball a single over, Misbah should come one down to give stability.. Pakistan Should win... Ammir, Asif, Afiridi, Ajmal, Razzak are enough for bowling......and just in case something happens hafeez can come in..

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:27 GMT

Pakistani should replace Asif with Abdur Rehman and Fawad Alam with Hammad Azam, and Hafeez is going very poor throughout the tournament, these like players are only performers in Domestic Cricket, International Cricket is nightmare for them.

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:21 GMT

Pakistan should drop fawad alam there is no place for him in the team its like they are playing with 10 men instead of him bring khaild latif for extra batsmen or abdul rehman for bowler

  • ali.majaz on May 8, 2010, 7:12 GMT

Fawad Alam is playing in the side only for his fielding , this sounds so stupid coz Look at aussies , for them fielding is a compulsary thing , & they run like cheetahs i swear !! ... flawless fielding by aussies so far , I think We Need to Play Fearless cricket like we played in the Last T20 ,Pakistani fieldiers are not fearless , they hav da fear of dropping catches 7 thats why they drop so many ! & same is with da batting , be Fearless , go & charge ! Afridi = Afraid Just a little movement of words & you find da answer in Afridi's name that why he is not able 2 lead & plan .. he is afraid of losings !

  • nsidd75 on May 8, 2010, 7:11 GMT

can't understand why fawad alam did not bowl against kevin pieterson. we know he hates left arm spinners

  • on May 8, 2010, 7:07 GMT

I hope Afridi thinks like a captain of a national side rather than a club side. His rigidness resulted in Hafeez getting thrashed against Australia and he failed to take him off the attack. I wonder why the hell are they playing Fawad Alam he neither bats nor bowls would have been so much better to have someone like Rana Naveed or Imran Nazir in his place. Even someone like Sohail Tanvir would have been better than Fawad Alam

  • on May 8, 2010, 6:48 GMT

There is no position for Fawad Alam in the team. There is no unity in Pakistani team and also the captancy is very poor. If thay ll play like one unit no one can beat them. Insha Allah we will win today

  • on May 8, 2010, 6:37 GMT

The pakistan team combination is still best in the world but lack of confidance put them on back foot, if the survive that presure in such a big match they can get through in to the final and can defend thier world cup.

  • on May 8, 2010, 6:33 GMT

INSHALLAH PAKISTAN WILL MAKE A COME BACK

@ ^^ fawad alam is there to drop catches and leak runs in the fielding and when pakistan need quick fire in death overs so show his inability to score quick runs

  • zzkhan on May 8, 2010, 6:26 GMT

Try Hammad Azam for Fawad Alam .

  • fingerprint on May 8, 2010, 6:25 GMT

Pakistan should have to give chance to Hammad Azam b'cos the way he manage the things in under 19 WC at late stages is something to notice. We are a side who is really unpredictable so we must need Hammad in replace of Fawad. Pakistani team must have some multiple plans and we should not have to follow the only plan which sets in dressing room. We should have to come in the field with plan A and plan B and sometime with plane C. Afridi please use 1,400 Grams brain while you are on field ... Against England when England requires ball to ball runs you protected your boundries instead of giving some room to English batsman to play wild shots and trying to stop singles.... But still i think Pakistan will win this InshaALLAH ... Best of luck team Pakistan .... Whole nation is behind you ... Nauman

  • greatkhan on May 8, 2010, 6:15 GMT

I hope that pakistan learns from its previous mistakes. I thinkl its time that Fawad Alam be replaced & so should be Asif, Rehman & Sami should play instead. Asif looked shiort of match practice & fitness where as Fawad Alam is completely unaware of what he is doing. Pakistan should have a proper plan everyone who comes in tries to hit the ball out of the park. Attack first 6 Overs & last 4 overs the middle 10 overs shall be for conplidation. I hope & pray that Pakistan wins not only against NZ but goes on to lift & retain the title. Hafeez should stay atleast he can bat and the batting of Pakistan in this whole tournament has been a failure. go Pakistan Go.

  • on May 8, 2010, 6:15 GMT

Well i m just hoping today is the day for Pakistan Cricket team....first of all they are not in a good shape their moral is down & its time for Afridi to show up as a captain & other senior players has to take responsability.....Hope for the best for Pakistan...

  • on May 8, 2010, 6:12 GMT

i guess its the right time for Pak to perform, heavily under pressure in a do or die game ! thats when Pak does well. but we definitely need some changes in the line-up. first of all, what is Fawad doing ? he isn't a bowler (he leaks runs like hell), he can't bat (well not a bowler and yet coming in at no. 8) then why is he in team? wasting a spot? i think we need to introduce either Khalid Latif, Abdul Rehman or Hammad Azam (replacing M. Hafeez and Fawad) we can also introduce another pacer M. Sami replacing Fawad or Misbah. both of them are being useless. and Saeed Ajmal, man he needs to get better HANDS !

  • fayyaz03 on May 8, 2010, 6:11 GMT

well thats all the result of the pressure after the horrible tour of australia. I think Pakistan is still doing well. the only matter of concern is their fielding. 5 drop catches in 20 over is ridiculous. Afridi very quickly has to learn how to set the field. He, is only making mistakes in placing the wrong fielder in particular area. Come on Pakistan!! u need some aggression in the field to retain the title.

  • Saqib.Ali on May 8, 2010, 6:10 GMT

I think Pakistan need to change the batting order...like we can try Razzaq on one down position as he played so many times and if he will stay on the wicket then he is a capable for a long innings. Hafeez is not playing well on the international level....

  • MeAsFan on May 8, 2010, 6:03 GMT

    pak should paly with this lineup: 01. K.Akmal 02. S.Butt 03. F.Alam 04. U.Akmal 05. A.Razzak 06. M.Haq 07. S.Afridi 08. H.Azam 09. M.Aamir 10. M.Sami 11. S.Ajmal

    Good luck pakistan.....

  • 2456820-5 on May 8, 2010, 5:56 GMT

I believe that Pakistan is just wasting the talent to sit the two best players like khalid latif and hammad azam Pakistan should go with them give rest to Muhammad hafeez and fawad alam. in my believe fawad alam has no place in any format of game in Pakistan team selectors should tkink about him.

  • on May 8, 2010, 5:53 GMT

i think pakistan is going to win this match certain changes to be made: abdur rehman in place of fawad alam sami in place of asif

  • on May 8, 2010, 5:52 GMT

MAJEED ALI (LAYYAH FATEH PUR). I dont understnd why FAWAD ALAM is in the PAKISTANI side? What does he do, batting, bowling none of these. i tell Pakistani selector Mr. Mohson Khan dont see the big event and dont see the big Player. my selected Team. SHAHID AFRIDI IMRAN NAZIR KAMRAN AKMAL UMER AKMAL MISBAH UL HAQ SHOAIB MALIK ABDUL RAZZAK SAEED AJMAL MUHAMMAD AMER SALMAN BUTT SHOAIB AKHTAR MUHAMMAD SAMI ABUL REHMAN IMRAN FERHAT KHALID LATIF. LOOK pcb and selector never wrong and never to never

  • on May 8, 2010, 5:51 GMT

With poor fielding, poor captaincy you can't win. need some good response form fielders and also need a good captaincy. not like previous game, 3 catches drops at same field and same player. need to do some thing extra to win. Best of Luck Pakistan.

  • WildAmigo on May 8, 2010, 5:49 GMT

The playing 11 is totally wrong. becoz wrong players for wrong positions. (They don't select players on their merit and the selection is poor even as a non technical person i can feel that so y the selection committee is sense less and brainless)

    1. Hafeez shows very good form in domestic as opener so why to play him at 3. 2. Fawad is a middle order player so y play him at lower order. he can stabilize the innings if promoted up the order he takes time to settle. 3. Big hitter come early and the pressure is on the lower order to fire. 4. Y to select Hammad if they don't want him to play.

My team would be as per batting order in this poor selected team.. 1. Hafeez 2. Salman Butt 3. Umar Akmal (He never finishes the game) 4. Fawad Alam (Stabilizer) 5. Kamran Akmal 6. Hammad Azam (He can bat and good medium pacer) 7. Shahid Afridi 8. Abdur Razzak (Bowl him at start he is not good with the old ball anymore) 9. Saeed Ajmal 10. Muhammad Amir 11. Muhammad Asif (Hes not the best anymore)

  • on May 8, 2010, 5:47 GMT

Fawad Alam is a test player he is not a t20 player i dont know why he is playing t20, there is very good players in pakistan side like hammad azam & khalid latif but no one give him chance... very bad team selection & planning is very poor, and afridi captaincy is not like we except... May God Bless Pakistani team in up coming matches my best wishes with Pakistan Team... Best of luck Pakistan...

  • WildAmigo on May 8, 2010, 5:32 GMT

Pakistan is going to lose big time....Becoz all of us may have notice so many mistake they have made in selection of players and the team selection is totally absurd.

    1. They doesn't have fast bowlers replacements. Sami is the "Phuss" Chala huwa kartoos. Why is he always makes statements that he is going to deliver his best..(he always did it in the first match of the tournament. remember recently Newzealand tour and so many more if you get it in his past).

    2. Why to include extra spinner Abdur Rehman in if they already have many spin options in the likes of Afridi,Ajmal,Hafeez and if required Fawad.

    3. Why to include extra opener Khalid Latif (Shazeb is the better choice but they don't need openers they need solid middle order batsmen) if they already have Hafeez and Salman ( even I don't like the him in the team ofcourse our sick, stupid and foolish mentality that left and right hand combination always do good ) and pity is that they opted for Kamran Akmal to open the innings

  • Conynine on May 8, 2010, 5:15 GMT

toss will play a vital role today in the success of either team, Dan Vettori would be desperate to win the toss a set a big target for Pakistan.....NZ mustn't drop Southee infact they should consider replacing Nathan McCullum with Kyle Mills since the surface is not supporting spinners, 2ndly they really need seamers , can't rely on Oram and Styris bowling all the time.

  • on May 8, 2010, 5:08 GMT

i agree with mujeeb ur rehman..why the hell afridi doesnt come to bowl in the 6th,7th over with ajmal?

  • NKAli on May 8, 2010, 5:03 GMT

We need to understand the dynamics of TEAM-WORK. What is Fawad, A Sami, Saeed and A Rasheeddoing in the team. For T20 you require stroke players, feilders and bowlers............not tag alongs.

  • Faizan-Ul-Haq-Fareedi on May 8, 2010, 5:02 GMT

i think Pakistan Should use Amir, Sami and Ajmal as a Key Bowler some how Afridi is a also Great Bowler but still he is unsuccessfull to show his ability, ohter hand Newzeland is in pressure too becouse they havn't beat Pakistan.. so there is a chance for Pakistan to win this mactch to alive it in Tournament.... But T20 is unpredicable so Lets See... Hope for the Best.. Prepaire for the Wost... Best of Luck to Pakistan... Long Live Pakistan...............

  • on May 8, 2010, 4:51 GMT

  • gilbert84 on May 8, 2010, 4:42 GMT

Those of you calling for Fawad Alam to be axed obviously don't know what he's capable of or how he's been treated. He is being selected as a specialist batsman yet is being sent in at #8. That doesn't make sense and it's not his fault that the moment he comes in he has to slog. He's good for more runs than Hafeez, so perhaps the batting order needs to be changed.

  • on May 8, 2010, 4:22 GMT

yesterday i watch Australia & Indai match. everybody was thinking that india is best team in world cup but they were zero in front of Aussie players. i'm giving credit to our( Pakistani ) Players who fought much better then india. if our bowler conceded 53 runs in 4 overs their bowlers conceded 38 in two. bad luck was Pakistani players who gave lot of chances to Australian & England players. They drop lot of easy catches. but anyway still hope Pakistan will win. InshaAllah they will fight & they will win.

  • Nayeem_Kohir on May 8, 2010, 4:20 GMT

Where on earth has Nasser Jamsheed disappeared. One could see flashes of Saeed Anwar in him and looked very impressive in whatever chances he got at the International level. A couple of changes in the playing 11 and in the batting order will do for Pakistan. Mohammad Hafeez should be replaced by Yasir Arafat who is not only a useful bowlder, but could be as well handy with the bat down the order. Afridi should bat N.7 after Misbah. and bring in Hammaz Azam for Fawad Alam or promote Fawad Alam up in the batting order. Umar Akmal can be promoted as an opener to partner his explosive brother and if Umar Akmal last the 20 overs he can set up the game for Pakistan. Get Umar Akmal to open the innings & give your best batsman the chance to play the maximum number of overs possible. Umar Akmal has the aggression and technique to take advantage of the powerplays & then he can steer the Pakistan innings along. 1. Kamran, Umar, Butt, Misbah, Hammad, Razzaq, Afridi, Aamer, Arafat, Asif,Ajmal
