India to play five ODIs in Zimbabwe

ESPNcricinfo staff
  shares 82

India will tour Zimbabwe for a series of five one-dayers starting July 24 and ending on August 3, the BCCI has confirmed. It will be India's next international assignment after their tri-series in the West Indies that concludes on July 11.

The first three one-dayers will be played in Harare, with the last two in Bulawayo. India had confirmed their tour following a BCCI working committee meeting earlier this month. The trip had earlier been put on hold, with the board citing the 'fatigue factor.' It is uncertain at this stage if the selectors will stick to a full-strength squad.

When India last went to Zimbabwe, in 2010, Suresh Raina captained a young side, and didn't make it to the final of the one-day tri-series.

It would be good to see if the selectors throw a completely young side to tour...... clearly the tried and tested ones can rest for this tour and the young blood can be brought in..... Mohit Sharma is a name that comes to mind, Baba Aparajith - the teen sensation during the u-19 WC who was praised by Ian Chapel, Ambati Rayudu, Rahane, are the others whom the selectors shud favor.....

No point in sending 32+ old crickters who havnt made the current squad - its best to look ahead for the future....

  • Dominic_Mohammed on June 20, 2013, 12:52 GMT

This is a good move by BCCI, instead of people warming the bench, let them get some match practice in alien condition. Please do not underestimate Zim. They are tough team to beat in their yard, BD had recently tested that. If you check India's record against Zim in Zim that's not very great to boost at. Let the youngster and A team player feel the heat.

  • npc_cricketlover on June 20, 2013, 10:02 GMT

nice to hear this as this will help zimbabwe team get more experience. Indian team should send out a young team like unkmkut, pujara, bhvaneshwar, etc to groom players for future including 2015WC and also avoid fatigue of main members. I wish there was atleast one test match. Only if zim gets to play test matches against other teams (other than Bdesh) then can they have more exposure.(We need to see ways where we can have a strong base in countries with less cricket atleast if not finding new countries to adapt to cricket)

  • on June 27, 2013, 12:36 GMT

What? No Umesh Yadav???? then it will be the slow bowlers match

  • on June 27, 2013, 3:01 GMT

I hope Dhoni will stay himself away from the selection to allow the young team to go and perform. Dinesh Karthik could do the wicket keeping and Saha or Parthiv could be his deputy. This also will help the selectors to see how Virat Kohli is performing under pressure when he is the captain. I do not anticipate major changes in the team and the same team more or less may continue. The only change will be a replacement for Dhoni.

This will be an interesting return for Fletcher , having been part of a very good side that competed with the best, that included Proctor, Davison, Jackman, Shepherd ,Dudleston ,Clift, Heron, Shah etc etc playing against sides that included Rice , Van der Bijl, Barlow, Pollocks P & G , Le Roux , young Lamb, Richards etc etc it will be hard not to want to go and view the Police Ground up the road where that all took place, hope he enjoys his return . The names mentioned are testament to this little nations cricket pedigree , sadly they are a long way from this standard and need to be reminded of their history and proudly play cricket for the nation , in an attempt to get things back to a respectable international standard

  • jimbond on June 24, 2013, 11:21 GMT

It would be a good idea to blood some allrounders like Rishi Dhawan, Parvez Rasool, and Jalaj Saxena (better not to go only by their IPL perfornances). And Unmukt Chand also deserves a further look- again- IPL failures should not matter. . Based on the IPL, I thought Sandeep Sharma and Sanju Samson were good enough to play at a higher level- if not against Zimbabwe, at least in the A teams. Rayudu in the middle order deserves a chance. Better to try out some new guys in this series.

  • on June 22, 2013, 12:07 GMT

from point of view i think india cricket team should send a mix team like players not playing for india right now my 15 member squad- opener- gautam gambhir(c),virender sehwag, murali vijay middle order-cheteshwar pujara, suresh raina, manoj tiwary, yuvraj singh, rohit sharma, dinesh karthik(wk) bowlers-bhuwaneshwar,zaheer khan, praveen kumar, amit mishra, irfan pathan,p.ojha

  • on June 21, 2013, 19:21 GMT

I believe the 15 member squad should include mixture of different age groups. Keep the same squad we currently have in champions and tri series, but exclude Dhoni, and Virat, take in some young fresh talent players from u-19 team or others. Pujara, Rahane, Raydu. Do not take gambhir, shewag or yuvaraj. If u r desperate take gambhir otherwise do not take those three. during the 5-odi series, rotate the squad every 2 ODIs. In addition, i wish they included a test match to play. This would benefit both countries.

Don't forget, we have 7 ODI's against Australia at home in October 2013, before leaving to South Africa. even though its a home series, we can get experience for the upcoming south africa tour.

India should not send full young team. The senior players who currently playing in CT13 should be rested, the old horses like Yuvi, Bhajji, and Sehwag, should brought back with youngsters in the tour. Last time, the young team, in Zim we had been beaten comprehensively. Sehwag should be selected because, he can go to SA tour as a middle order batsman... There are chances that M. Vijay not performing against Steyn and CO in SA.

  • Varun_R123 on June 21, 2013, 9:59 GMT

Please include Badrinath in the squad. He deserve at least this opportunity playing for India. The selectors will not give him any chance in Tests for sure when so called Raina and Rohit are there in the team.

  • Naresh28 on June 21, 2013, 9:32 GMT

GOOD TOUR TO SEND some youngsters in preparation for the SA tour. I am sure Pujara will lead a young side. I remember many years back when a young India toured Zimbabwe(my country) . There were Ganguly, Sachin, Laxman, Kumble, Shewag, etc These guys went onto to play in the senior team. Players like Sanju Samson, Mohit, Chand, Pujara, Rahane, Rayudu these players should tour. Zol will be in Oz U19 team tour.

Why not revamp the entire team. Let the current team rest (CT2013 squad), try out the old horses with uncapped players, if at all they can play and win us matches anymore. the team can go this way, Sehwag, Gambhir (c) Unmukt, Badrinath, Yuvraj, Yusuf, Ambati (wk), Harbhajan, Piyush Chawla, Rasool, Zaheer, Irfan, Praveen, Mohit sharma, Awana...

  • talenthunters on June 21, 2013, 9:16 GMT

  • Surajrises on June 21, 2013, 7:18 GMT

@Kunal & Mahesh: What's the use of sending our senior players to this tour when you know that the end result would be 5-0! Dhoni & Gambir made their mark through these Zimbabwe tours when they played for India A team and now its time for our younger players to go and play in these conditions more because we have a 2015 World Cup coming and BCCI and the fans would like to know who can be the ideal replacements if god forbid some of our senior member got injured during the World Cup. Unmukt Chand (Captain), Pujara, Stuart Binny, Mohit Sharma and all younger players should be going to represent India not our senior players. They are anyway playing too much Cricket and at the end of the day, might end up with below par performance in the Test Series! Rather they can rest and look after their body because they are not getting any younger!

  • Romenevans on June 21, 2013, 6:55 GMT

No Gambhir, Sehwag, Bhajji and Zaheer at any cost. These oldies will perform against Zimbabwe and then again start knowcking the doors of Indian cricket and then again Indian cricket will go the same old way of oldies. Do not mess with current indian team at all, for god and fans sake, please i beg you selectors.

  • Romenevans on June 21, 2013, 6:53 GMT

Selectors should send the next crop of Indian team. Sanju Samson, Rishi Dhawan, Sandeep Sharma, Unmukt Chand to name a few.

Can also try youngsters like ambati raydu , mohit sharma, rasool ,awana . Can be used to build up team for 2015 world cup

  • Surajrises on June 21, 2013, 6:10 GMT

Once upon a time, Australians had their strong national team and would have another set of strong players playing in the Australian A side so that if any senior member got injured they could easily trust and draft in a junior player but with same capabilities as the senior player and that's what BCCI needs to focus on. This is the right time to have a strong strong A Team. So tomorrow if Kohli got injured, then an inform Unmukt Chand would be a proper replacement for him. Stuart Binny should definitely be tested to see what wonders he can do in Zimbabwe under those moving conditions.

Best chance for India to try some new fast bowling options.. tired of watching same bowlers coming again and again. We need tough competition for fast bowlers, we can do this by increasing pace bowlers pool, so that they compete.. Awana, Mohit sharma, Unadkat should be given more chances..

  • Cpt.Meanster on June 20, 2013, 19:32 GMT

@sitaram58: Just look at what you are saying. Don't you feel Zimbabwe deserve opportunities to play against stronger teams ? How will world cricket become healthier without some of these 'smaller' nations playing well ? I think you are being a bit mean here. It's not just about big bucks and the big boys. Cricket is a struggling sport and if we keep away ZIM and BD out of an already small group of nations, then cricket will be only played by 3 or 4 teams in the future. Yes, the timing of this series perhaps is bordering along reckless. But, I see it as a fantastic opportunity to provide international experience to some of our youngsters. The conditions in Zimbabwe will be very similar to South Africa and that is our next international assignment in November.

  • Cpt.Meanster on June 20, 2013, 19:05 GMT

A pointless series (with all respect to ZIM). Anyway, it would be a nice time to give some time off to our young "seniors" lol and try a few of the up and comers like Rahane, Aparajith, Rayudu, Unmukt Chand, Manoj Tiwary... and these are only batsmen lol. Plenty of options in the bowling department too. I am guessing Raina will captain this side or perhaps Kohli ? Anyway, it would be good practice for Zimbabwe to play against such a heavy weight.

  • sitaram58 on June 20, 2013, 18:50 GMT

Why????? 5 weeks is enough time to host a 7 ODI 4 T20 triangular between India SA and then next beast team available. Much more money in this prospect than throwing Zim a bone. Makes no economic sense to ever play Zim or BD.

The Only Worry regarding this scheduled tour to Zimbabwe is that the Presidential Election will be Held in Zimbabwe on 31st July, the day of the 4th ODI. Campainging for the Poll will be in the Final phase during the Tour and given President Mugabe's relation with the PM Tsvangirai who had opposed the date of the election this and was made PM only after the mediation from African States after he complained of robbing the victory in the last Presidential Election by Mugabe. The Prez-PM had an uneasy relationship in the last 4 years and there was violence after the last election . Hopefully, Indian Cricketers wont have any problem during the tour. Mugabe is 89 , President of Zimbabwe for the last 26 years, is seeking re-election this time also.

  • doctorofdeath on June 20, 2013, 14:17 GMT

Please don't include the non-performers like Sehwag and Yuvraj in the squad. Sure they have made India proud but they are very much out of form and their inclusion in the squad will only spoil India's winning chances. India is currently doing great and they should stick to same winning squad keeping in mind the WC-2015.

Sending team youngsters who haven't got chance to play in Indian squad like, CM Gautham, Vijay Zol, DK, VK, etc would be nice..

Send a team something like Rohit, Dhawan, Unmukt, Pujara, Tiwary, DK, Jadeja, Mishra, Kaul, Mohit, Yadav, Rishi Dhawan, Vijay, et al.

India won't gain a lot in the rankings even if they whitewash Zimbabwe. In my view, this tour was almost needless... The BCCI should send some of the younger players like Jadeja, Raina, Tiwary and Dhawan to play domestic cricket in South Africa for the November test series rather than claim unnecessary glory by beating mediocre teams...remember even before the Australian tour in late 2011, India beat West Indies at home and got whitewashed down under... hope it doesn't repeat again!

This should be the time to test our senior players. My team is, Sehwag, Gambhir(c), Pujara, Rahane, Yuvraj, M Tiwari, D Karthick, Sanju Samson, Harbhajan, Mishra, Ojha, I Pathan, Vinaykumar, Mohit Sharma, Praveen kumar.

If you skip out on too many top Indian players than Zimbabwe will simply win the series and will suffer a heavy drop in the rankings. I agree there's no point for some players like Kohli, Dhoni etc to tour and need rest. But I still want to see players like Jadeja, Raina etc to go. Perfect opportunity for someone like Pujara to showcase what he can do in the form and others like Vijay.

Hope it does'nt become a backdoor entry for the HArbhajans n Yuvrajs. People like Ojha, Rahane, Tiwari, Badrinath, Mishra, Vinay Kumar shud be given opportunity to perform. Zimbabwe is a weak side, but international match practice n experience never goes to waste.

Last time when India toured Zimbabwe in a triangular series, India lost both their league matches against Zimbabwe with a second string team. Indian Team Management has to rethink and choose the players wisely.

    Indian Cricketers are work horse!

  • Narbavi on June 20, 2013, 8:47 GMT

Jadeja, Dhoni, Ashwin and probably even Kohli should be rested for this series since they have been playing non stop for a long time now, and this is where the likes of Pujara, Rahane, Binny need to be given their dues.
