TEAMS
Joshua Da Silva is a keeper's keeper, combining solid glovework behind the stumps with a stoic approach to batting in front of it. A calm batter who knows how to bat with the tail, his sole Test century - a gritty six-hour effort - came in their company against England in Grenada in 2022.
Da Silva was selected among the reserves for West Indies' tour of England in 2020 after an impressive domestic season in 2019-20 for Trinidad & Tobago (T&T). He made 507 runs at 50.7 in first-class cricket, dislodging Denesh Ramdin from the T&T side, and was part of the West Indies Emerging Players squad that sprung a surprise by winning the regional Super50 competition. He scored over 300 runs in the tournament, including an unbeaten hundred against Windward Islands.
On the tour of England, he pitched his case for inclusion in West Indies' main squad with unbeaten scores of 133 and 56 in an intra-squad game. He made an appearance in the third Test as a replacement for the injured Shane Dowrich, but made his actual Test debut later in the year in Wellington, scoring 57 and becoming only the sixth keeper to make a half-century on debut for West Indies.
He was picked by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL draft ahead of the 2020 season and won the title with them in 2021.
His calm and longevity in the side influenced West Indies' selectors to appoint him vice-captain ahead of their Test series against South Africa in 2024, but it turned out to be a short-lived stint. He was dropped from the side following a lean run and a loss to Bangladesh at home.
A skilled keeper across conditions, Da Silva played both cricket and football at St Mary's College in Port-of-Spain before deciding to pursue a career in cricket aged 16. In 2017, he spent a stint playing club cricket, for Old Wimbledonians in Surrey, as part of the Kieron Pollard scholarship programme. He is of Portuguese heritage and became the first white player to represent West Indies since Brendan Nash in 2008.
