Stephen retired during the 1996 season. He holds, as at the end of that season, a number of Irish Records. He holds the most caps, at 114. He also with 4,275 has scored the most runs and again is the only player with more than 4,000 to his name. A stylish opening bat he creates the impression of solidity and gives confidence to those who follow him. He has captained Ireland in 39 of his matches.

He has a cricketing pedigree, his father Larry having also played, captained and scored a first class century for Ireland. He was chosen to captain Ireland on its first entry to the I.C.C Trophy in Kenya in 1994, only to be unluckily struck down with injury, breaking his elbow in fielding practice just before the first match in the tournament.

Outside cricket he has played Rugby Football with distinction for North of Ireland Rugby Club and is an Insurance Broker.

Stephen's retirement leaves a large gap to be filled in the Irish team.
