The elegantly named HHH Johnson, usually just Hines Johnson, created a splash straightaway when he made his Test debut against England in Kingston in March 1948, picking up 5 for 41 and 5 for 55 in a ten-wicket win. Wisden noted that the six-foot-three Johnson "looked a truly great fast bowler".

The 10 for 96 was the best by a West Indies bowler on Test debut but the record lasted just a shade over two years, when Alf Valentine got 11 for 204 against England at Old Trafford in 1950. The other record - the best match returns at Sabina Park - lasted much, much longer, all the way to 2005, when Corey Collymore got 11 for 134 against Pakistan.

Johnson was in the touring party in India in 1948-49, but didn't feature in any of the five Tests. Valentine's 11-for came in Johnson's second Test, and he went wicketless there, having bowled in only the first innings because of an injury. The third came later in that series, at Trent Bridge, where he picked up three wickets in the first innings, but that's also where it ended for Johnson, who was 40 already at the time, the second World War having temporarily stalled his career after six first-class games for Jamaica.
